King-Size Woman (c. 1965/66)
Long before he achieved international renown with movies like Crimes of the Heart (1986), Driving Miss Daisy (1989) and A Good Man in Africa (1994), Australian filmmaker Bruce Beresford did a stint working as an editor with the Nigerian Film Unit in Enugu. In his downtime, he shot a few short documentaries observing various aspects of life in his new environment. One of them was King-Size Woman, a short subject recording the colorful slogans painted on commercial vehicles in the city. The film's soundtrack is provided by The Postmen, a "beat" group Beresford became acquainted with when he befriended the band's lead singer--a young mechanic and aspiring actor named Sonny Okosuns. Beresford helped The Postmen produce some of the earliest rock n' roll records made in Nigeria and later attempted--unsuccessfully--to promote them in England. (Most Beresford biographies date this film to 1965 but to the best of my knowledge, The Postmen didn't form until 1966.) Within the next decade, Okosuns would become a huge star on his own steam, and lead guitarist Goddy Oku would also make a name for himself as a producer, engineer and leader of the early 1970s band, The Hygrades.
Beresford and his friend Sonny Okosuns briefly reunited when Beresford returned to Nigeria to shoot 1990's Mister Johnson, starring Pierce Brosnan.
