Episode 132: What's the Most Important Thing in Teaching?
Sharing is caring:
what is a classroom without community?
Teaching the course book content and box ticking and curriculum Is not enough.
We have to think about how to build community in our classes.
It's not too hard and it has a lot of benefits. And, like mindfulness and mindset, community lends itself to language teaching so well, there's no excuse not to give it a try.

Hi there, listened to this as a follow-up to Hugh's IATEFL webinar this Saturday entitled "Teaching Speaking Online". "Long-form" independent interviewing is becoming more popular these days, hopefully, this means that people are learning to concentrate for longer periods again, or at least dedicating more time to intellectual debate. His point re "experimental practice" in DELTA (M2) struck me as this is something I'll be taking on next year (having completed the other 2 modules). Does this mean to say that Cambridge isn't yet ready to accept the Lexical Approach into the mainstream? Ideally, they should look at the way they teach CELTA when they give entry-level teachers the keys to teach in 1 month. I don't know what % of CELTA-qualified teachers go on to do DELTA or an MA but if say, only 10% do, then you're left with a pool of teachers who probably only teach PPP, and mostly through a coursebook. Cambridge has an interest in the publishing market, of course. Even before "discovering" Hugh Dellar & Michael Lewis, I've found myself veering towards this approach as a more natural way of delivering a course. Thank you! (btw subscribed & shared with those who care)

Hello Dominic, thanks for your comment and kind words. Yes, as long as there are course books, there is an easy way to build a syllabus and tick boxes, even though this really isn't conducive to real learning, in my opinion. It would be amazing to just 'teach'. I rarely use my course book and try to do as much lexical stuff as I can. I haven't hit the sweet spot yet but I'm really trying and I know I'll get there. It's just a matter of time. Trust the process!
