If I can get enough time, I am going to do a build 2.0 - and document everything. Use bus bars, fuses, etc and keep track of costs etc. I think I may change the shunt - not sure if it's a battery bms or shunt - but the box is in like a paused mode until I hook to a charger. I want to get that figured out as well. I was also provided a 24v inverter, I want to mess with mixing different batteries and see what happens.... Stay tuned!

Not enough room for an inverter big enough to power anything

I put everything through the shunt so it can track all the in and out. I recently used the box and had no power until I tried charging and it came back. Not sure if that was the battery or shunt. Will try to do a follow up video. Also getting another small battery - will try to do a 2.0 version of the build with details. The first one was to really see if it would all fit and work.

in all fairness this was not a how to wire up video. that does take time and editing to build out a nice clear wireup instruction video. also the wireup depends on the A/C you have. they do go to the same componets mostly, but wire color and location can vary so this video would be longer to watch, harder to produce, and only be super relavant for those with the same systems. i got what i needed out of it which was the clarity in how much range there can be in the softstart devices. it never really crossed my mind that some could perform so differently as i figured they all worked within a similar range and it came down the build quality, warrenty, form factor. but a 5 amp spread was unexpected. I never tested the before and after on my install, i know it made a difference as it allows my 2k watt inverter to run our GE a/c without tripping it out..but does it perform as well as his is the question. also my wiring was alot different so this video would have been completely useless to me for the softstart i have on mine.

@bretmohler9719 I don't understand WHY it would be as a retired special forces soldier who has trained thousands. If im going to do something, I'm going to say I used a 10mm socket here or a wire here. To me, if I did something ANYWAY, if I don't want to edit, I could list stuff at the end on a whiteboard. Maybe it's the teacher type in me. Now, if I was NOT going to do it ANYWAY, then I wouldn't go out of my way to say it or show it.

@@Michaelthearcheangel well as a retired special forces soldier you are acting like a pretty entitled child about this. How about doing your own video on the install. There are other videos out there and this guy didn't claim this was an install video, just a comparison. The manufacturer provides the instructions and I found those to be adequate when I did the same thing the other month. There are instructional videos, and informational videos. This is informational, moving on.

Thanks for your nice comment. I am EPA 608 certified so yes I do know - about 0.0 life removed for the 3 minutes they ran making sure the starter worked correctly. Even if I did run the unit without the cover I wonder how the fan motor life would be reduced or even the compressor motor? I was also testing startup amps from the compressor draw. Yes they will all vary but very little. Do you always leave flattering comments on videos? I loved yours.

I’m also have my certification 608 and 609. 😂 he’s just test starting the compressors. Why do you act like a know it all?

Agree - I put some little fans in it. Is the lifepo4 chemistry subject to run away?

@@Hunleygarage I’ve been told that while LifePO4 batteries are among the safest of battery chemistry’s, they can occasionally experience thermal run away if the BMS fails or if a cells are punctured. During normal operating conditions off gassing in aLifePO4 is minimal, but a during thermal runaway event LiFeP04’s produce gases that are highly flammable. If they’re allowed to build up, like in a sealed container they can cause an explosion.

@@riariaria I am not sure I have ever seen or heard of a LFP in a TR event or even off gassing unless you drill through the cells or place in a fire above 500f.

@@Hunleygarage If you search “The thermal runaway analysis on LiFePO4 electrical energy storage packs with different venting areas and void volumes” you will find a scientific paper published on Science Direct that explains the phenomena.

Agree on power density they make in the car. Pending you watt/mile - the 2,560 watts could get you 12 miles at 200w/mile. Still not very far, and would take 2 hours to charge. If you could get 30 - that would be worth the trouble. After driving all over, guess I’m not really concerned anymore with knowing the limitations and with chargers being everywhere. If I was going somewhere remote, might want to toss something in though

@@Hunleygarage yes I made a custom extension lead to run my combi gas boiler from a portable power station. That doesn't work either with floating neutral.

I wouldn’t use it for more than 50amps - which at 12.8V isn’t much - 640 watts….

@@Hunleygarage Ok, I understand. I didn't find anything more powerful than 200A. I occasionally need to use a 1.5 Kw device. That's why I'm looking for options.

Right now it just charges via the MPPT and solar. To charge via 120v, I just hook the charger into the Anderson

@Hunleygarage sorry but I can't even take you seriously knowing you're only saying it's "really nice" because the company sent it to you for free. Got to hand it to them, they did really good marketing sending them out for free to a lot of people in return to make a CZcams vid for them praising their product. Hell, I almost got suckered into buying their expensive 5 dollar Chinese product. There is so many better options on Amazon with better reviews for 1/3rd of their price. Like I said, even the OEM Tesla ones are cheaper.

@@Hunleygarage I just stuck 600 watts of them on my camper. Work great, my only concern is the rubber roof membrane and elevated temperature. Have you had any issues?

Which soft start? I think each one was a little different configuration. I had to study what the soft start wanted and studied the wiring diagram. Then figured it out from there. I tried not to cut wires when possible. The hardest part was cutting a hole between the wiring box and the compressor compartment for the one soft start.

It’s got to be at least 10 years old. I do have the little programmer box, so thinking I could change the voltage parameters to work with the lifepo4 - I think.

@@Hunleygarage Mine is probably half again (no it's twice that I think it and the genset were both installed in 04 or 05) older than that, I was researching it on Outbacks website, and mine didn't have a path to working with LiFePo just too old, their newer stuff will if I was reading it right. I love my Outback, it's been daily for it's whole life powering a semi truck sleeper

Solar charger is only for charging with solar panels. You would need a lifepo4 charger to recharge it.

I'd like to replicate this for my kayak trolling motor. Why the need for killswitch or fuses? What makes this different than a battery box, they dont have ventilation either?
