    So nice and peaceful… until your oboist roommate decides she has to start gouging cane at 11pm at night, and then ties brightly colored silk threads all over your kitchen chairs, and then takes your antique etched glass juice glass to her performance (after you EXPRESSLY told her not to) and breaks it. And her always sucking on the reed and honking away to test the reed. Nice girl, total flake.

    You had some very interesting techniques in this. Do you have any trouble with sealing when slicing the reed all the way through? Every teacher I've had only slices shallow lines alone the tube. Also, what is the benefit of triple wrapping the third wire? Ive never seen that before either. Finally, do you have any issues with the blades slipping when twisting the mandrel?

    • @willmorris8198
      @willmorris8198 Před 4 měsíci

      I also noticed that. I took was taught to score the cane before forming the tube. I would imagine that this works because the reed gets wrapped later on and the thread/duco covers up all the gaps that the knife made making it airtight.

    WOOOOWWWWW... I NEEEVER KNEW THAT USING A METAL THING THAT MOST PEOPLE DON'T HAVE AT THEIR HOUSE ISNT CONSIDERED USiNG SPECIAL TOOLS. I AM IN AWE AND IM DYING RIGHT NOW OH MY GAWD (but seriously I got scammed watching this vid because you use a very SPECIAl TOOL that most people don't have. Actually make the title not a scam).

      @MusGaia Před rokem

      Hi! It isn’t a video for “most people” in fact and in my opinion, I’m using the “essential” tools (some of them are homemade from an old friend) and for “special tools” I mean : Reed tip cutter, Profiling & top profiling machine, Gouging machine, Scoring machine, Density machine, Plastic tube wrapping, Dial indicator, Plaque with light, Tip finished… there are so many tools that you can use to be accurate, but I mean, I think besides the “scammed” feeling maybe you also had a relaxation moment by watching it 🤣

      😅Unfortunately it's a "special" work anyway to do. You need the essential tools at least (of course) but trust me that these are nothing compare to what you can really have! ;) I don't think a violinist would wake up one day and say "oh! today I will build a double reed!" 🤣

    It is a bit of a process but doesn't seem too complicated at least. How long does one reed last though? I'm an alto sax beginner and I usually change my reed after a week or two of playing, this seems more of a hassle if you gotta change it often

    • @MusGaia
      @MusGaia Před rokem

      Hi! For sure singles reeds are “easier” to find in shops, but the struggle of using a Reed is the same. One Reed loses the power as much as you use it, it can change with the weather and it can just suck. There are so many different things that can affect the duration of a Reed. :) So can go directly in the bin 🗑 or maybe a month if you are lucky 🍀

  • @Marcblur
    @Marcblur Před 2 lety

    Wow! I never knew about splitting the bottom of the reed blades to form around the mandrel. Every bagpipe reed-maker will faint when they see that part. I always thought it was strange that bassoon reeds don't have a shaped brass staple like oboe or bagpipe (smallpipe, border pipe and uilleann) reeds.

      @MusGaia Před 2 lety

      Yes, not everyone but there are people who can have the funds to do this, most of all bassoonist and oboist( we have too, or we can buy finished reeds). My tools were second hand and each reed it costs around 2€. It’s more about time than funds in this case. But if you want to talk about how much it costs to have an instrument that needs reeds every month, than it’s another story.😅

    I’m a brass musician and ofcourse we use our lips as (reeds) that are already on my face haha. But i’ve always had an admiration for double reed instruments like the Bassoon and Oboe. If i’d ever get the chance to try one i for sure would. But everything about double reeds is so expensive 😅

      @@MusGaia oh i wish you the best of goodluck! I happen to be a Euphonium and Trombone player with also the trumpet which I started out on the age of 7. If i can give a detrimental tip. Never push the mouthpiece to hard on the lips and let the muscles do their work. If you play without tention. You’ll br there in no time since you must already have a very strong embochure from playing double reeds i think. If you have a good mouthpiece and a decent trumpet it will play with not too much effort 😁🍀🍀

    Secondo me anche gli strumenti considerati "facili" sono difficili perché si sottovalutano. Pensate all'emissione per i flautisti che è relativamente facile rispetto agli altri strumenti dell'orchestra eppure così difficile perché è facile sbagliare intonazione...la domanda è sciocca e voi lo avete dimostrato. Bel video, questo aspetto traspare subito quindi brave davvero e grazie!
