I Boat Flipped an Absolute Unit on a Frog!
Prefishing for a Bites 95 Team tournament out of La Crosse, WI on the Mississippi River, I hooked into an absolute donkey on a frog. There's nothing more satisfying than watching one of those big green heads come over the gunnel and into the boat! This girl (at the end of the video) weighed in at 5.24 and was healthy as can be. Unfortunately this area that seemed to have a few quality fish around didn't pan out for the tournament and we ended up weighing just 14.80 for 5 fish. Time to regroup and figure out how to get back in the check line!

Lake St. Clair Bassmaster Open

Pop some popcorn for my longest video yet. I had a great experience traveling to Detroit, MI for my first of 3 Bassmaster Opens in 2024. The final result wasn't quite what I hoped, but the experience points I gained were invaluable. I learned a lot and became a much better "scoper." Love or hate it, this is where the game is now and if I'm going to compete at this level in the future I need to ...

The Winneconne BFL did not go quite as well as I'd hoped, but I still had a solid day on the water, catching 12-1 and finishing 26th Place. Next up is the Bassmaster Open at Lake St. Clair! Looking forward to chasing those big brown fish.

When Sunday's tournament was cancelled due to high water, I decided to go out and wear 'em out! The fish moved a little bit on me since the river rose over a foot in 24 hours, but they didn't go too far. I fished through them once and got a couple bites but didn't think anything of it. With a bait adjustment, I got to see just how many fish were hanging around one little patch of lily pads. It ...

Catch the excitement as it happened during the BASS Nation Qualifier out of La Crosse, WI. I wish I could show you more fishing, but some of the places I caught big bass on video were just too important to my local tournament success to give away on the internet. I had a really strong practice with a couple of big spawning smallmouth found, and several areas with big largemouth in skinny water to build a big bag around. Unfortunately other anglers caught the smallmouth for me, and the big largemouth vanished with the dropping water. Weighed 14-4 and finished up 20th, first out of a check. Lessons learned, on to the next!

    Really interesting insight on this particular--and unique--winter! I don't know if what I'm about to ask would be for another video/report, but I was wondering if you could comment on how you eliminate water in the springtime. Like in the fish catching clip in this video, what generally was it about that area that made it attractive to bass this time of year (i.e. like features or conditions)? Like for me, I always wonder about current. Is there an amount one should avoid? For example, many backwaters still have a good amount of current, so are those types of spots places I could just avoid fishing altogether and move on from? Conversely, I've tried backwater areas, like in boat harbors, where it just seems dead. Not seeing bait, bugs, some kinds of activity showing an active ecosystem and such. So yeah, it gets confusing sometimes and I get the sense that I'm spending precious minutes and hours casting away in spots that aren't holding fish in the first place.

I look up to you a lot as the king of pool 8, and really appreciate and look forward to learning any info I can on Lacrosse from you in these videos and other podcasts. I recently learned about the rice grass last year as well and been trying to learn that area down there. I know its hard to give out alot of great info youve spent alot of hard earned money and time learning. I trip up alot from Chicagoland suburbs in the summer and Lacrosse is hands down my favorite place to fish. Last year was my best year so far at learning new areas and patterns. Hope to one day start fishing the BFLs and maybe be as good as you. Would love to call that place home. Really enjoy following your YT and FB and best of luck this season, King!

    What's your tips for when we keep getting this cold snaps then warm spells? Do they go onto points before they spawn or just head right to spawning areas?

    • @cadelaufenberg
      @cadelaufenberg Před 4 měsíci

      The short answer is yes. But we must remember that there are way more bass in the system than we can wrap our heads around. Different waves of fish move up at different times. A prespawn staging point is a collision zone where you're always going to run into bass coming and going. Fish funnel in to spawn, funnel out, and new fish move in to use the area. You'll know you found a good place when you catch fish that are fully prespawn, fully post spawn, and bloody tails but still holding eggs all in the same area. We're finally at a point now where the colds spells don't do much to hamper the bite. They'll reposition daily, but they're not going to be uncatchable.

    • @jeffharry7280
      @jeffharry7280 Před 3 měsíci

      @cadelaufenberg Awesome information man I've been following you for awhile Watching you beat up on fish all times of the year and different situations, I am still fairly new to bass fishing and struggling big time with the bass migration which would definitely help get me pointed in the right direction I need I believe. It would be really neat if you could do a video on the migration of bass on Mississippi river or atleast how and why they wanna be places

    • @greglovell2166
      @greglovell2166 Před 3 měsíci

      @@jeffharry7280 Exactly! This is what I appreciate about Cade's content and tried to convey in my comment above as well. For me, I just don't have a ton of availability to fish in the spring, when everything changes so quickly. So even though I've fished the river for many years, I'm pretty much a rookie flailing around out there in the springtime lol. It's nice to learn about the key principles and facts behind the methods--and for the river specifically. And also to visually see some concrete examples (without giving away spots and whatnot). I think that's really nice and helps me get the idea. It's surprisingly difficult to find quality, truly helpful information about bass fishing the river short of well-intentioned yet unhelpful generalities, like "focus on backwaters for largemouth in the spring" or "smallmouth like a little current." Well, there are like thousands of square miles of backwaters, so.... lol
