    The amount of fossil fuels used to create these battery farms outweighs the “4hrs” of peak demand. Liberals never cease to amaze me. As long as you feel good then it’s ok? This is worse for the environment than the old fashion was.

    His is all to cover the elec part of energy. This is 20%. What supplies the grid in2050 when fossilfuels are cancelled. This will probably quadruple the demand for elec. How much have they paid for these batteries. Engineers calculated USA would be £350 trillion by 2050.. So how much is covered and how long doesit last 4 hours ?

    This update offers valuable insights on enhancing the operational tools needed to manage California's modern high-voltage grid. Throughout my 37-year career in Power System Operations, I have always advocated for real-time, actionable information that System Operators can utilize to maintain situational awareness. If your team requires additional assistance in developing future tools, please don't hesitate to reach out. I am available to help in any capacity.

    You need how many megawatts to power all the housing units in California exactly? Does 15,000,000 MWh a day or 450,000,000 MWh a month sound relatively close? Also how green is that really?

  • @patrickm4729
    @patrickm4729 Před 10 měsíci

    Using a multiplier of 1.0 ensures the resource will be able to dispatch for day ahead awards. We reduce the multiplier to be more realistic and avoid being overly-restrictive. W/ the 1.0 multiplier you are limiting the max total reg awards to the duration of the battery - i.e. a 4 hour battery could never win more than 4 hours of REG (e.g. 2 RU + 2 RD if the battery starts at 50% SOC). max duration of DA REG awards = battery duration / multiplier Since hitting these envelope bookends precludes the battery from any further energy awards. One would imagine that this would encourage resources to seek energy awards earlier in the day, and reg awards later in the day. This would allow for the greatest total awards in the DAM. If a 4 hour battery is awarded 4 hours of REG early in the day, it cannot be awarded energy for the remainder of the day. If the resource is awarded 4 hours of REG awards at the end of the day, this methodology woult not restrict energy awards. The PG&E solution, while less restrictive could also create a situation where there battery cannot recieve any awards if SOCat is at the maximum bound AND SOCen is at the minimum bound. Should Reg Down awards increase the lower SOC bound and vice versa, making the bounds less restrictive. These adjustments could perhaps be made with a lower multiplier. Reg Down awards would increase the ability to later be awarded Reg Up awards and vice versa - though not on a one for one basis perhaps. It would make sense to reduce the restrictiveness by restoring a portion of the envelope each interval. For example, for the 100MW/400MWh battery, each hour the SOC_U is decreased by 25MWh and SOC_L is increased by 25MWh. This would serve to keep the battery in the game while keeping the total DA awards manageable. Optimal Strategy: Use a single envelope-style constraint, but with more flexibility than the CAISO proposal: - The SOC_U should include a REG_U factor w/ a reduced attenuation factor to add flexibility and vice versa w/ SOC_L and REG_D. This allows the REG awards to offset each other as in the PG&E SOCat equation, but reduced coefficients to account for the uncertainty. - Reduce the contraints by some amount each interval as described in the previous paragraph. This strategy: - Accounts for movement in both directions due to REG - Builds in some uncertainty for deployment - Allows the resources to receive DAM dispatch awards throughout the day - Reduces likelihood of too many awards in the same direction in an unmanageable time frame. We would need to optimize: 1) the REG attenuation factors that tighten and loosen the SOC_L and SOC_U constraints 2) the factor by which the constraints are loosened each interval to give back flexibility over time SOC_U(n) = SOC_U(n-1) - (energy discharged) + (round trip * energy charged) + A*(reg down) - B*(reg up)- (X) SOC_L(n) = SOC_L(n-1) - (energy discharged) + (round trip * energy charged) + C*(reg down) - D*(reg up) + (Y) where: A > B and D > C X and Y are both some fraction of the battery energy (probably proportional to the power rating of the energy storage system) A, B, C, D, X, and Y are all coefficients that should be optimized to balance flexibility and confidence that awards can be practically met.

    ...Another great session. For those familiar with Mr. Scott Garvey, once again Mr. Harvey brings up excellent points throughout the session. In my opinion in working with real front line large customers, Scott Harvey is a voice of reason in the Market Surveillance Committee of what happens in the "real markets" especially when CAISO is in an EAA2 scarcity event. Finally, the PowerEx people always provide great observations on Western Energy Imbalance Markets and the Hour-Ahead Scheduling Process (HASP) which is a process for scheduling Energy and AS based on the Bids submitted into the from Scheduling Points.

    ..Today' August 9th Media Briefing by CAISO. President CEO Elliot Mainzer is very open and transparent. He talks about variable energy resources and the role of storage, Demand Response, Flex Alerts etc. The Utility Account Managers across California play a role in being on the "front lines" supporting and communicating out to real customers. Everyone is learning and working together. My take is the outcome will show that California once again at the leading edge. Imagine a future of "Automated Demand Response initiatives" connecting and integrating thousands of buildings to really help the grid/CAISO.

    Informative update from CASIO. The questions from the media demonstrates they probably need training on the role and methodologies of the California Independent System Operator (the Balancing Authority), the Scheduling Coordinators ( the utilities), the Public Utilities Commission, and the California Energy Commission, including integration across the "Western Imbalance Market aka WEIM". However, I understand because over the years I spent many hours listening to CASIO, EIM, Western videos on this channel. Also took myself to CAISO training.
