I read my short story "A Wintering Place," which is included in Delta of Cassiopeia: Collected Stories and Sonnets, a finalist for the 2023 Big Other Book Award in Fiction. The story is a sequel to Mary Shelley's #Frankenstein, a novel that has been a regular source of inspiration for me. "A Wintering Place," first published in the journal Eleven Eleven, is reprinted in the paperback edition of...

The importance of mastering the short form
zhlédnutí 24Před 2 měsíci
In this video I discuss the importance of mastering short-form material before trying to write long-form projects. That is, fiction writers should master the short story before tackling a novel; poets should master the creation of an individual poem before trying to write a whole thematically organized collection; etc.

    I saw this video on Twitter and followed it over. Interesting stuff! I hope that we're getting looser on genre, too; I've never really let it inhibit what I write, but I've also noticed especially in the commercial field of publishing and promotion genre plays a tremendous role. Thanks for posting this, and I hope your reading goes well tomorrow!

      Thanks for watching and commenting. Yes, in the commercial publishing world, agents and editors are very uneasy if a manuscript doesn't easily fit into a particular pigeonhole because that means bookstore managers won't know where to place a book.

    I wonder how niche is experimental literature? Or, is it a thing that is just treated that way.

    • @tedmorrissey
      @tedmorrissey Před 6 měsíci

      It's obviously not a binary: traditional narrative (whatever that means) vs. experimental narrative. Rather, it's a continuum -- and one may have touches of experimentation in an otherwise mostly traditional narrative. And of course vice versa. Thank you for watching and for posing an interesting question -- one I've only barely begun to respond to.

    Following up, Professor Morrissey. I admit to avoiding videos - I'll do better! I had read about Hemingway's trick previously - I tried it, but end up more often doing what you do - leaving myself notes for the next step. I have established a writing routine of daily 20-30 minute sessions, but they are stolen wherever I can get them. I always have my commonplace journal with me - or a computer. It helps me remember that writing IS a thing in my life - and more ideas seem to be flowing this way, too!

    I like the advice from Beth Warden, If you have an idea, write an essay; if you have a message, write a short story." The thesis statement in a creative piece could happen anytime, couldn't it? I would think that if you have a story in mind and the story has a Freitag storyline, wouldn't it have a basic message to convey, but maybe it would change sometime through the writing because rarely will a piece stick to the plan as the writer works through the project to its end. I think Brady was hitting on it.

  • @charlielydon
    @charlielydon Před 11 měsíci

    I would have to agree with you, @simmonslcsw, about some distance between an author's political views and their writing. Heidegger comes to mind. He supported the Nazis, but his writings have changed the world of philosophy of the 21st century. I know people who, to this day, raise their noses now after finding out more about Heidegger. Presenting oneself is a dangerous game in this day and age as well. People with opinions on social media can "find"" you and then stalk you both online and in real life. On the other, as an author, you have to promote your work and want to get your work out there, and one way to do that is to have a presence on all the platforms and be everywhere. This needle that needs to be threaded is something that people make entire careers figuring out and get paid large sums of money to make happen.

    21:57 I appreciate you sharing your experience and process of how you draft with us. I also needed to hear your thoughts on how not to compare my work with that of the finished work of people who have spent months or years working on their’s. I am going to have to extend that to others students as well. I will be “stretching” my comfort zones and writing in genres I have never written before.

    I enjoyed this quite a bit. Is this podcast available via podcast software outside of CZcams? Like Google Podcasts? One thought I had regarding author presence on social media is I prefer some distance from an author as a reader. An author's reactions to issues of the moment via Twitter can get in the way of my ability to have all sorts of fun transference. You don't want to know all your therapist's political opinions and/or see them get into social media spats. I feel similarly about authors.

    1. How could you mention the Mary Reilly film without mentioning Julia Roberts, who played the title character?! (I say that with both laughter and defensiveness, as I'm a little bit of a fan of her brother's.) 2. Testament of Mary was released in 2014, according to Amazon. (But it must have been a year earlier, as I mentioned it in the introduction to a book I released in 2013.)
