This Company Sent Me an Axe to Throw
Thrw Club sent me an axe to check out. I did this video on a whim, I don't usually check out products from companies that reach out to me. But it's summer and I thought it might be fun to throw an axe in the backyard with my kids!

From my previous video on the Belgian Blue stones many asked whether the stones are suitable for an axe. Belgian Blue stones are wonderful for axes, and I demonstrate how to put a scary sharp edge on a Husqvarna carpenters axe. Use the code N5RRGLCDVSA8 for the 15% off until Sunday 6/16/2024
Hanging That Bulgarian Axe from Etsy

I got this axe from Thracian Forge on Etsy. It's a great axe, quality steel, interesting shape, and makes a decent carver. Be careful with the handle shape, the pointed heel makes a great shaping axe, but needs consideration and a special handle.

As you may know, Ontario Knife Company has been sold and that includes Old Hickory Knives. I came across some information after recording this video that Blue Ridge Knives may have purchased equipment as well from Ontario Knife Company. This is curious given the seemingly low purchase price of $2.1 million. I will continue to investigate

Wow! Looks like _someone’s_ got an axe to grind.
I thought the goat was gonna get it with the first throw.
Haha she was farther back than she looks but the video makes it look so close! I showed them away so many times and they kept coming back…
I see it fell apart in your comments!!! Too bad!!! Otherwise would be perfect.
Yeah it was a bummer. I spent a LOT of time on the saw. It could be so great but they cut too many corners. I’d LOVE to find a real 070/090 and mill with that.
Don’t over rev it. Rings need to seal. Etc.
That’s how they looked 30-40 yrs ago. We had 2 new ones back in the day.
Piston stop😂😂😂😂. Carefull when using
Looks like a fun little axe !
It really is!
It still has a beard. It is more of a Nordic axe than a tomahawk. I ground the beards off my cheap tomahawk. Mine is hard as a rock, too. I still have not mastered throwing it, yet. After you polished it you ought to rust blue it 4TBs of peroxide, one TBS of vinegar and 3/4 TSP of plain salt. Boil in distilled water and card with 0000 steel wool - six coats for a good blue luster.
Great vidio bro.i bought the last pocket knife.great pocket knife....retierd my 1973 old timer.
That’s awesome!
I also reviewed one of these axes last winter and I liked it but it looks like they've made several improvements, which is great. They appear to have upped the hardness, which is nice, but mainly retaining a bit more wood on the handle and adding a sheath addresses the major issues I had. I'd like to think my feedback was helpful.
Nice work
8:33 Ill just say for now that this brew looks tasty 🍻
Looks like you have the throwing dialed in pretty well! Nice handle, decent sheath and interesting shape.
It’s a fun axe. For oak the handle is definitely great. A nice one to learn throwing
Think I heard you say you didn't like the handle shape but I gotta be honest this looks like a great camp axe for making a spatula or 2! Pretty impressive. I see this as very good competition for the cold steel axe gang product. Not sure I've seen a slip fit for competition throwing but I don't see why it would matter if it's legal.
The handle is great, I was mentioning I’m not a huge fan of the square body sides of the axe head. I’d definitely grind them off if the whole head wasn’t hardened! It is a fun user, keeps a nice edge. From what I’m seeing here it’s better built than the cold steel axes, so definitely a good option
@@urbanlumberjack Must have misheard. I noticed the pretty oak right when I saw that endgrain. Reminds me a bit of the Japanese oak handle I have.
Pretty cool of em to send you that. Where are they made, is it a US company? Pretty suprised to see 60+ on a throwing axe, could get a bit chippy. Kids look like they havin fun, good stuff👍
I don’t believe it’s a U.S. company in actually not sure where they are based. The axe is definitely hard! I was surprised by that too. I kind of wish the whole head wasn’t hardened because I was planning on doing a big re shaping of the whole thing. Fun axe to chuck around the yard though!
Hey brother, love your content, just want to say thank you for the videos you make and God bless you and your family!🙏🏼🤙🏼
This made my day thank you!
Throwing axes is really fun! 🪓 I made a video about it a while ago too. There are different techniques to learn, including no-spin. It's a lot of fun!!
That’s awesome! I’ll check that video out
I'll take one of your pieces of art! Do you ship? 🙂
Hello,Was it worth buying this chainsaw, does it still work today without any problems?
Would NOT buy again. I put tons of money and work into it and it never ran right. I gave up on it, it’s not a saw I recommend
Thanks for the information, which saw do you recommend for heavy duty? Example: Sawing fence posts @@urbanlumberjack
👍👍👍
I'd reprofile it or check out the Council Tool. As is it is absolutely too thin. I think 25 deg is in order.
PS: I can't believe it has such a skinny edge. 15 degrees is all the bite and no support. Definitely a green wood tool here.
Very informative. This helps me choose.
Thanks for watching!
Nothing beats an authentic 070 or 090, but the Chinese are masters at cloning stuff.

Not sure why they would want to stay on etsy? The fees are outrageous! It's the reason I switched to a website.
I totally agree, that’s why I decided to not use this platform.
For.Sure. This could be a blessing in disguise.
Another cool vid, like the narrative throughout, hope you can get some logs sorted out. I second the other fellows suggestion on the State forest permits, i do that here my state forests are like my home away from home. Be great for you and your boy to get out bush, hunt for logs, camp out, teach him mapping and all sorts of bush skills. Keep up the good work, not just for us viewers sakes but your own as well. Finding a joy in life, plus a good way to be an example to the youngsters, is too precious a thing, to lose over such minor inconveniences. 👍💪🪓🪓🪓
I’m definitely going to check out a permit. Seems like a lot of fun too, and the national forests here are some of my favorite places. I love your videos out in the bush. I’d like to do some videos like that over here
Nice hewing! Hang in there man.
Thank you!
Really interesting how keen Gransfors makes that axe. I thought it's rare for even high priced axes to be keen these days. A major manufacturer doing it is pretty cool. Excellent hewing. Something truly wonderful about essentially carving on the scale of timber frame lumber. The tie hacks doing 10-40 of these a day is nuts!
I love the carving process of hewing. That GB is definitely keen. Good steel and good grind. I haven’t even touched it with a file yet
Too bad that your logs are drying up but great job on that hewing!
Thank you! I’m hoping to figure something out soon
Nice vid! Good show of both the axes. Ive long looked at the GB but never bought mostly because of the longer handles. A 30inch would be great. Awesome work on your part with the broad axe, that thing really showed the advantages of a specialist tool, seemed to get the beam looking nice, pretty quickly. Without a cupped blade they are so much harder to use. Good stuff👍👍🪓🪓
@@kurts64 Hacksaw the GB to 30" Mr. Kurt...
Hey I’m in the north Georgia area also I do alot of freehand chainsaw milling. The way I get my logs are Facebook marketplace where people have had trees fall on their property and they will let you have it for free or you can get a permit from the forestry service and go on the national forest and have all the downed trees (logs) you want
That’s awesome! North Georgia is gorgeous I camp up there quite a bit. I’ve looked at the firewood permit process before is it worth the time? Every now and then I do see an amazing tree down in the national forests up there and wonder if it’s possible to harvest it
@@urbanlumberjack I’ve harvested off national forest before you just have to get the permit. I think it was like 40 or 50 bucks it wasn’t bad. I believe it’s good for a year, but I can’t remember. As for as if it’s worth the time to do it depends on how you look at it and what your end goal is, as in if your doing it for a hobby like myself and trying to sell some on the side or if your trying to make a legitimate business out of it you might have to go about it a different way
Cool fact, the Romans used these.
Just a couple of weeks ago, a great axeman declared Council Tool the greatest value. These two together compliment each other. Having owned both these units, I must agree with U.L. Any knowledgeable axe orator can talk about these two tools. But who can talk about them eloquently and then demonstrate the effectiveness of the tools. Then to to top it off, stone one to shaving sharpness, all the while being a great father wading amoung wood chips with a goat and chickens conversing in the background. A visually stunning beam and excellent camera work URBANLUMBERJACK....
That is super generous! I’ve looked frequently at your channel for guidance on how to do a CZcams channel the right way, I really appreciate your encouragement and support!
@@urbanlumberjack get outa here...
I am a Gränsfors fan, but to be fair against the other axes I think the Gränsfors was at an advantage due to being first when you were the least tired.
That’s a good observation, very well could explain the results
You are so underrated this is such a great channel man
Thank you for the encouragement!
You are so underrated this is such a great channel
I would think it's a heat treating issue with that batch. It shouldn't be rolling over that much. Especially that fast.
It definitely could be. Interestingly enough I’ve never heard anyone with issues on other models of GB axes. Just the SFA, and seems to be isolated to a few years of production
How much of an affect does the edge sharpness make?
I’ve found sharpness matters a lot for hewing. When my axe stops biting I tune it up pretty quick
@@urbanlumberjack Have you noticed it being important while chopping?
I feel like my tuned dayton is a better chopper and better splitter than my stock jersey. What do you think? Im thinking the jersey will bite much deeper once tuned due to the profile being narrower than the dayton.
I think Dayton v jersey comes down to preference and bit geometry. Generally the Dayton will chop deeper but the jersey will chop more. Both should be capable of being great choppers
@@urbanlumberjack which one do you prefer for splitting?
Well done and great comparison! I bet your kids have some great stories to share at school about what they got up to with Dad in the backyard!

Don’t use Holzfarma coil. Get stihl original. Or get ahold of Baileys logging supply. I noticed you’ve got the old style gas/oil caps??? So how old is that saw??
The 661 is brand new, the g660 is several years old at this point. The Stihl coils are definitely worth it
Biblical 😂😂😂😂. Like Moses parting the Red Sea ???😜😜😜
We cut 1000-1300 cords a yr. Yes a year !!! Using 66 & 46. Holzfarma. Cut about 150-200 with each Saw. Now we also use stihl. 46&66.
