Welcome to Rusty wrecks where I try to turn rust into gold as to put it by changing old rusty motorcycles into well working bikes that can go back onto the road along with a few custom projects and tips on how to keep these old motorcycles running.
I do what I can in my shed with the tools I have and tend to learn as I go
feel free to subscribe and follow and watch the mishaps and pitfalls.

Hi Pete,love the Honda 400 twin.good luck with .
Hey, thanks!
Awesome! where did you get those flexi pipes from and how much?
ebay about £19 each the seller is called everyexhaustpart
really like it Pete!
Thank you
Hi Pete, looking good, I'd not through of using flexi pipe, don't think it can create the curves I want, but still food for thought. Will message you with what I have left of my old Superdream seat. Ryan
Hi Ryan, you can get different types of flexi pipes that bend more & Thank you I look forward to your message
quite brilliant, i thought you would use high temp paint for the exhaust or cant you spray stainless steel!! very interesting giving Ryan some great ideas 👍👍
The problem is getting VHT or any type of paint to stick to stainless steel although I will give it a try, thanks for watching :)
Hi Pete, was wondering what you'd been up to. Hope the ultrasonic does it's job for you. Would be good to see Red running sometime soon.😃
Hi Ryan, the red bike (Xanadu) will be running again soon better than before, next video is exhausts on the blue bike then might make a start on the red one again
Jusy bought a cb250t to restore, it comes with a 400t engine and front double discs. I think i will maintain them. Anyway very useful video thx!! Where is located the honda frame label on the 250?
it depends on the country your in but usually the frame number is on the headstock
nice to see you back pete
Thank you
Hi Pete, sorry about your old car, whilst the new one may be a bit sluggish, I hope it will be good and reliable for you. If I had more space I'd take on the cheep bike, but got three bikes in my garage all ready. Ryan,
Hi Ryan, as long as the new car gets me from place to place it will be ok for now & I know what you mean about space for bikes lol
Hi Pete,I had a similar cambelt failure on a kango van , auxiliary belt snapped and threw itself into cambelt bending umpteen valves ,I should think the 125 should sell at that price👍
it's a shame when these things happen but in this case the cost of repairing it was more than the car was worth
hi..enjoying your content.
Thank you, more video's coming soon
Tank now looks loads better, well done and thanks again. 😀
Thank you, it just needed a little tweaking nothing major.
Your keeping yourself busy Pete ,the tank looks fine👍
Thank you
great job on the tank
Thank you
Hi just saying hello , recommend by Ryan 🙋🏻♂️👍😊
Hi Welcome to the channel
I can't offer any advice, as I've never tried anything like that before, but I wish you the best of luck with it. 🤞
well if this one works I may be making a lot more parts LOL
I would never have thought if using polystyrene ,good idea Pete👍
well its easy to work with and shape was my first thought lol
nice work Pete, will look forward to seeing the next stage, and I like the hoop over the top idea too
Thanks 👍I got the idea from the Honda SL350 but think it will look better than the last way I had the bike
looks really good, good luck with the fiber glass fingers crossed it comes good🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞
Thank you, I'm really hoping the fibreglass goes well too LOL
hi Pete, i have some seat catches from my CB400N that i do not need, also, if you dont need the skinny tank, how much would you like to sell it for?
when I get rid of the tank I will let you know as I want to get a rounded one before I get rid of the skinny tank, but I am interested in the seat catches if you dont need them
Your project bike is getting there Pete. .as you well know Cb250t / 400t dream parts are getting harder to find now ....good luck
Thank you, parts are getting a lot harder to find but I would still love to restore another one day.
maybe an idea to use an airbox off a 250N totally redesign it and use the wheel guard to stop the road side rubbish getting to your wiring harnes to protect yor air cones
Sounds like a good idea I will have to look for an old airbox
Your bike, your decisions Pete 👍
I think it will look nicer with what I have planned , thank you for watching.
I personally thought the original bike was looking good, but its entirely your bike to do as you wish. You got plenty done in a short time, and glad the diagram will help. 👍
well I still have all the parts if you need any of them but it will look nicer with the planned changes.
🏍👍
Thank you
interesting how by accident things appear to be just waiting to be found, i agree the red tank shape does look better, look forward to more vids 👍
lol I've been looking for something to put the pod filters on for months then these things appear when your not looking for them
Pete you've made a nice job of those. John👍🇬🇧
Thank you
Maybe a piece of rubber hose for carb inlets Pete, a car radiator hose the correct diameter might suffice?🤔👍
Tried that a while ago but then needed steel pipe to go in the end of the rubber pipe and it just didn't go well lol But I was thinking some thin stainless steel pipe the right size might work.
@@RustyWrecks yes probably better than the lid idea,I wouldn't like to go very far with those on ,they are a good fit though👍
Carbs. Designed to both meter fuel into an engine, and take many hours of time away from your life in equal measures!! 😉
LOL so so true
Couldn't agree more!
Good morning Pete, hope you're well. Quick question as your in carburettor mode.... The air shut off valves on the side of my carburettor are missing ' only just realised '.. What are the symptoms of these not being fitted? My bike runs great at full throttle but terrible low to mid... It maybe the jets as I assumed they were correct. Thanks David
if you dont have the air diaphragm's you'll notice when you let off the throttle it will pop and bang like a misfire usually & they connect to the idle circuit and main jet which can affect performance, usually best to fit them lol, Ive got a problem with one of mine at the moment where it needs a new diaphragm but i dont have any spares at the moment.
onward and upward looking forward to next installment 🤞👍
There's loads more to come, thank you for watching
You'll get it sorted Pete,just takes time👍
Carbs are a week point for me but as you say it all takes time. :)
Pete if you want to send them to me, I'll clean them ultrasonically and return them to you, no charge John
Hi John, Thank you for the offer but I should hopefully be buying an ultrasonic cleaner within the next 6 weeks or so.
Hi pete, hope you're well. Do you know where i could get some main jets for my carburettor? Think i need to go up a size or so. There the same as the one's in this video. All the best David.
dont know at the moment as I usually use the ones that come either from rebuild kits or from broken carbs that i strip down, sorry
Good idea Pete swap the carbs and see how it goes)👍
Thats the plan we will see if it works very soon
Thanks Pete. Now realise why my 400t runs bad with the pod filters on. You learn something new all the time 👍🏻
I just do the vids hoping it helps people, happy that it did, I'm working on a way to make better spacers to solve the problem.
@@RustyWrecks I'm going to have a closer inspection after tea. See what I can come up with.
swaping carb sounds the way to go adleast then you know its a carb thing, good luck
Its either carbs or cdi so we will soon find out but I think it could be a bit of both, thank you for watching
Nice info regards these Bikes Pete. I can vouch regards the hard to find bits! You reeled off most of the parts I require for the next basket case I’m attempting. 😄
Thank you, some of the parts you can search for months for then finally get it and the next week there will be 6 for sale for half the price lol, when I get another frame I will be looking for some of the same parts, cant even find a frame at the moment though lol
Cheers Pete, Lots of useful info in this upload.
Glad you enjoyed it
The silencers....are yours original or aftermarket? They look great - Im in need and those look very nice
Hi They are aftermarket 20" chrome megaphone silencers from ebay and are made by Emgo but are only about £55 each rather than £100+ for originals and they suit the bike and sound good, so worth while going for, hope this helps.
nice viewing Pete - thank you
Thank you for watching too.
very interesting great bike
Thank you
Nice clean example Pete,i dont want one but remember when i worked in a Honda dealership a blue 400 automatic model,im sure there is a few of them still about👍
Thank you
A mate had a new 250 dream in red, I always thought it was a good looking bike. Later I had a black XS250 with cast wheels, but I never liked it, thought it was gutless. Preferred to ride my MZ250. These days I keep buying bikes for spares but end up keeping them & can't bring myself to scrap them. And the decal preserve nature always wear a helmet lol.
Pete I've bought myself a 400N, I enjoyed your walk around. Thanks for the CDI tip, have you done good mileage with the BB version? John👍🇬🇧
I had an XS250 in black and gold nice looking but very heavy and never liked starting then I got a CB250T and loved it so bought the CB400T, but the same if I can save one of the bikes I do even if it costs more than its worth lol
@jd6549 I havn't tried the BB Bike shop CDI yet but hear great things about them
hi Pete any surggestions or videos you can surgest to remove rear wheel bearings on a reverse comstar wheel i have looked every where but no joy as you know the Haynes isn't very good at explaining this procedure on the rear wheel, enjoy your vids carry on the good work. Mal
On any comstars including the reverse comstars I use a large socket (bigger than the bearing but you could use a piece of steel tube ) a washer and a Rawl bolt and just put the washer on top of the socket put the rawl bolt through both and then into the bearing, the rawl bolt expands and grips the bearing pulling it out as you tighten it, but you have to start with the break side of the wheel then there's a tube that goes through the wheel and if you tap it a few times you can get the other side to come out, hope this helps & good luck & Thank you for watching the video's.
thanks Pete @@RustyWrecks
Hi Pete. Good to see you up and about again and another instalment. Am enjoying each new up load. 👍 I maybe interested in the spare front end you have surplus. If in better condition than the one I had to use on the next Dream.
Hi Noel, If you need the front end just give me a shout, I'm only going to be building 1 more bike which I already have the other front end for, glad you like the video's
The red 400 is a beaut, I'd love to have it in my shed!
Thank you & I will be doing more video's on it in the future
Hi Pete, was wondering where you were! sorry to hear about your conditions flaring up 😢 I tell you what though - the red 400T is a beauty, nice to see it in all its glory and I look forward to seeing you share your adventure getting it back on the road - I did wonder about those tyres before you mentioned they needed changing. The 450 project is looking good too, thanks for showing us
Glad to share the story of the bikes and all that goes with them, just hope it inspires some one somewhere to revive these beautiful old bikes
There was a CJ250 ,360T around about the same time if i remember correctly and the old CB engines would fit into them Pete👍
Thank you, I don't know much about the 360T but would like to find a CJ250 one day, I will look into them find out which engines fit
My Bad explanation CJ 250 T and CJ 360T ,my brother had one and put an engine from an earlier model in ,the old CB 250 ,70s model not sure which one though,to long ago lol👍
