I never was able to figure out why it was so much more difficult to get my top side arm and shoulder out of the water with back stroke when compared to freestyle. Then I saw one of Gary's videos and he had the kids on a bench doing shoulder extensions at the top of the recover. Well, DUH! With freestyle, your shoulders are on top of the water. With back stroke, they start out much farther under the water. As near as I can tell, you need to use a slightly higher rotation angle with back stroke, like 45 or so rather than 40. Along with the shoulder extension, this will get the top side shoulder out of the water for less drag. Only other thing I see while swimming my over arm side stroke is that so many will finish their pull with a down push rather than a back to the wall push. As soon as your palm starts to rotate, you are losing your grip on the water. As far as I am concerned, the correct way to pull has your palm flat against your thigh at the end of the pull. As for straight arm pulling vs. bent arm pulling, you can't engage the pulling muscles like you can with freestyle. There just isn't enough strength on anyone to make a straight arm pull like the windmill style used for the 50 meter sprint. As for the kick, with the back stroke one difference from freestyle. With back stroke, the power in the kick comes more from the knee because there is no flexing at the hip to get a good angle for propulsion. If you try to do back stroke kicking the same way you do freestyle, your knees will be coming up out of the water. The surface of the heel is more streamlined than your knee, so a little less drag with the back stroke flutter kick than with the freestyle kick. I do count my kick numbers and back stroke is several kicks fewer than freestyle flutter kick. I am guessing that this is the reason.

I learned if you pull immediately after your hand enters it will cause turbulence (bubbles). You should let the hand drop in a little deep to grab more water at the catch (hand & arm) with less turbulence = faster backstroke.

I want to swim it all the time... you get to check the weather.... but oh well i suck at it :( The head position, i have read during my ASCA training is that for backstroke the head should look slightly tilted to make the back rounded, and the body position in backstroke isn't the same as freestyle, what are your thoughts?

How would you say the primo compared to air2 and the carbon glide in terms of middle distance to long distances 400/800/1500?

I tried this technique yesterday but i don't know why while learning I turn my direction automatically while swimming and find myself somewhere else than my destination (I drowned yesterday because I went into deep side of the pool and I accidentally took mt breath under the water by which waten went straight into my nose and I stopped right there and couldn't breath nor touch the floor down)

Lol he has study aspect of the 100 meter and no way he can swine that fast, and he personal know and teach a few of the swimmer. Lol... hey coach, they're this thing on utube called setting where you can view the tape in slow motion, Zhanle won the race on the switch back he gain 90% of the lead there. The other tiny 10% was on the straight away. It was the flip over he was twice as fast and being not 6 foot he did he flip way ahead the 6 ' longer legs kick off didn't matter, as he was still a faster 10% swimmer on the straights away. He human not a robot
