Bad Drone Footage (first flight with the Mavic Pro)
First flight with the Mavic Pro Platinum at a park near my house. I'm going to need a *lot* of practice before I can shoot anything approaching smooth footage with it.

Oh sure, we'll just go play a ton of notes while 15 feet apart. Why not? Sorry for the potato quality, I tried zooming the original 1080p video a bit and wasn't entirely successful. Original full-show video from brass staff Ben Gunnarson here: czcams.com/video/k2Imj0BVIq0/video.html

Now with video thanks to Derrick Phillips!: czcams.com/video/XVafDnk7Hvs/video.html This is 1987 SCV recorded ON THE FIELD at DCI finals. Snare line member Nathan Beck had a walkman taped to his carrier under his uniform and captured an amazing performance of an amazing Ralph Hardimon book. Special thanks to youtube member "homfencing" for the audio file!
1991 Lafayette Band Year in Review video #1

From the year in review video produced by Dick Simpson and FCTV. Music: well, it WAS "New York, New York" by Frank Sinatra, but his copyright lawyers didn't like that, so now it's "Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head." Yeah, there weren't really any good choices.

From the year in review video produced by Dick Simpson and FCTV. Music: well, it WAS "Forever Young" by Rod Stewart but his copyright lawyers didn't like that, so now it's a random track chosen by CZcams.

Such great times. Thank you for sharing.
Whoa!!!
OMG X 5 or 25. Made my day. And I've heard this, many times. Never live though, or Fields of Gold, despite seeing her in Toronto
THIS IS SO GOOD. Too bad the view count is so low.
Very odd to hear it without any counterpoint.
Nice flying around! 0:42 is my favorite shot! Good work with the drone footage, looking forward to seeing more. Thanks for posting.
I shot this in 4K30 since that's what the Mavic maxes out at, then slowed it down to 50% in FCPX w/ Optical Flow. That turned out (perhaps unsurprisingly) to be a bad idea, especially for lateral motion. I think my next video will be 1080p60 or 1080p96 so I don't have to slow it down in post. 4K may need to wait until I'm a better pilot and can shoot smoother footage.
If you have Pencil Sketch from last night, could you upload that one too?
Thanks for uploading!
thank you so much for uploading this!!! so gorgeous...
My band director always says Lafayette hasn't not been in State Finals since the 80's or something and yeah, I see why. Nice to know they've always been really big and really good lmao.
Flipflopz Threeonethree Lafayette won the state championship every year from 1990-2002.
What does the in ear monitor do exactly?
That brings me great memories of being in the pit!
You forgot to mention that the entire lick is a split... lol
Any sheet music?
The seemingly impressive nature of the staging is virtually negated by the fact that they have in-ears. Innovative use of technology, esp when you consider calibrating latency, but not an increase in demand or effect
There's not a line out there, not BD, not Cadets, not SCV that could pull off playing that lick at that spread *without* using in-ears. They're using technology to make the impossible possible, and to get a big GE hit. If you DON'T know they're using in-ears, it's mind-blowing. If you do... it's still a good lick and a great effect.
Lol you were at the lot video in the comments
yeah, like I said: the tenor feature is awesome by itself, but the staging is nutso.
2:40-2:54 Tubas/Sousaphones FTW
What is the significance of "Spaghetti"? 00:46
Micah Lall-Trail Oh bullshit.
Micah Lall-Trail I’m not. That’s the most overrated, bloated, elementary/high school halftime show in DCI History.
Cool, thanks Oruga101. I was the soloist. Thanks for posting this, Brian. We are old. 😎
I was sitting very close to you!
Outstanding....congrats to the 2014 SCV drumline for carrying on the tradition of excellence!!!
spagetti
I sync'd up this audio with the video of the show. Now it's fun to watch too! (I guess I can't post a link here so search for: 1987 Santa Clara Vanguard Onfield Drumline Recording (with video) Posted all the text from here and on the video over there too. All is in tact, credited and linked (back to here). I was in the horn line that summer and this is truly one of the most amazing lines/books to ever take the field!
I teared up at how great that was.
Thank for posting this great history. I hope kids listen to this! ON FIRE OBVIOUSLY> I AM GLAD I GOT TO EXPERIENCE IT LIVE!!!!!!!!!
As good as the Cadet were... SCV are the uncrowned 1987 DCI and HIGH DRUM CHAMPIONS in my humble opinion. They did not DROP A STICK!!!!!!!!!!!!
Someone is gonna " Go Pro " from their Harness.
One of the greatest drumcorps shows of all time. Too bad they don't make em' like this anymore...
Chattin in the tent. YES! Damn we were kinda good.
Dave Gary RIP Homie 😪
Still one of the most beautiful books ever written!
Spaghetti?
Dude, you rule for this. 1987 Lesghinka is still my favorite Corps solo of all time! If you have pdfs of the music, I would love to have them!!!!!!!!!
best book period...snare and tenor score is freaking flawless
All I can say is wow! FREAKIN WOW! You guys were tight! One of my favorite openers too.
"Jesus Christ, quads." LOL, gotta love ole Charlie.
Well, this is one of those books that always puts a smile on my face. At 6:05 The diddle figures that the snares are playing are simply delicious. This is in my top 5 DCI shows of all time. Some of Ralph's best work.
It's a case study for my high school drumline. I talked to them about legends like Ralph Hardimon. I was blown away first time I saw this show in person (as a member of FL Wave). This is like uncovering a hidden treasure. I will be using it as a teaching aid. I wonder if Mr. Beck knew that this would be like the holy grail when he recorded it in first-person.
I saw it all of the time but I have to say it again... If it weren't for this show I probably would've never marched... Because of this show it had to be SCV. Thank you Ralph and Gail and everyone that had a hand in this.
Truly amazing--from one of my favorite shows. And perhaps the best percussion feature of that era.
I love Ralph's smiley's :0)
That's great!!
Nice. Cadets were bad ass that year.
Noteworthy! :)
Thats just how the activity evolved.. You can be as bitter as you'd like about what Drum Corps is today, but no doubt the reason it evolved was so that it could stay in existence.
Bitter old coot.
25 years later and still sounds better than the dancing, squating, clownshow of todays drum lines.
*sigh* EVERYONE asks that. You could ask the writer, Ralph Hardimon....he was the first person to reply to this posting. I'd put aside a few grand to buy the charts if he has them, tho. Wayne Downey would've charged me $1000 for the brass book from 84 BD...which I stupidly did not keep when I marched that show.
Nathan Beck, we salute you!
