Grande Ricci!

Many people told me I couldn't do it, but I have, I've played ABBA on my violin, by ear, I am so very greatful to The Soundstage for their support of my forray back into the hardest instrument to play there is. SUPPOSEDLY THE VIOLIN IS THE MOST DIFFICULT UNSTRUMENT , AND FOR A TIME IT SEEMED A VERY CAPRICIOUS, CONTRARY OBSTANANT, AWKWARD, MALLEVONANT, PAIN TO PLAY. HOWEVER I LEARNED FROM AN ORIENTAL WOMAN SOME THINGS THAT REIGNITED MY PASSION FOR THE INSTRUMENT. THINGS THAT WERE SORELY HELD OUT, AND BACK FROM ME AS I WAS GROWING UP. I THOUGJT WELL I CANT READ MUSIC, MY FATHER, MY MOTHER, MY GRANDFATHER, MY VIOLIN TEACHER JUST PUT SO DAMN MUCH PRESSURE ON ME, I COULD ONLY GIVE UP. SO I DID FOR A WHILE. BUT MY LOVE FOR THE INSTRUMENT KEPT KNAWING AWAY AT ME, SO YES I AM LIMITED IN MY REPERTWAR BUT THAT DOESNT MEAN I CANT PLAY THE VIOLIN. SHE SINGS FOR ME AND I LET HER TEACH ME BY EAR. MY MOTHER WAS VERY IMPATIENT FOR ME TO READ MUSIC. BUT IF I HAVE A PROPERLY TUNED INSTRUMENT IT DOESNT MATTER. PEOPLE MADE IT HARD FOR ME SO I COULDNT REALLY ENJOY THE VIOLIN. AND TO ME THAT IS THE BIGGEST WASTE. THEN THE ELECTRONIC TUNER CAME ON THE THE SCENE AND ITS A DIFFERENT BALL GAME JOSIE!

Ricci was as good as anyone of his day, and often better. His Mendelssohn recording is fantastic, with perfect intonation and stunning clear as a bell left hand and bow articulation that rivals or exceeds a Milstein or Kogan. Yes, he would take chances in a live concert, and could be careless, but so what.

He had one hell of a left hand. I never cared much for his music making but he certainly knew everything about the technical side of the violin. The funny thing was, he was a very small man, and yet look at what he could do? Literally anything. He actually sounded good into his 80s. There's a video of his last recital out there - it's good! It was done 30 years later, in 2000.

A rather strange performance from such a gifted violinist. In any case he would pass NO exam in this world with his insane and sloppy playing which produces more than anything innumerable wrong notes. Musically this is showmanship with nothing more profound to offer. I know, however, very different recordings by him that keep all the promises his technique actually makes. That's why he is indeed one of the great legends of violin playing. - But by no means with THIS recording.

Not a pretty face, but one hell of a violinist. Ruggiero Ricci didn't look like a violinist. He had the look of a prize-fighter. In fact, he looked a lot like Rocky Marciano. I'll never forget the time he visited the conservatory at Interlochen in 1978. The students were both honored & amazed when he dropped by. Then, he treated them to the 2nd half of Paganini's Caprices. I could write a book on Ricci but no on YT. His technique was bold & masterful. His tempi was always brisk. He never played it safe. He was old school & never used a crutch under his violin. His posture was perfect; legs at the right distance apart with most of his weight on the left leg; feet always firmly planted. Unlike many of today's violinists, he never made stupid-looking faces nor did he move about while playing. He was always pleasant to watch. This 4th concerto is one of my personal favorites. The adagio is my favorite movement, because it reminds me of a Sicilian funeral march. FarmerTice.com

Ok even most violinists probably won't quite understand just how insane Ricci's left hand pizzicato is. He only uses the bow when he absolutely NEEDS it, meaning he can pluck, for example, a 3rd finger D on the A string with his 4th finger on E. Most violinists (including Paganini) would bow this note instead due to the massive amount of finger strength required to pluck it, but not Ricci!

The only one that can do all the different techniques so easy like this, no one has ever reached to this easiness yet. You can say that Roman Kim has some special abilities(the most famous special harmonics especially), but no one can do all the different techniques so easy like him. And the last part the tempo is just insane! Literally nobody can play this tempo with this quality, although there are someone very close to it(Xiang Chen) but not the same speed and quality(of course Ricci used many easier fingering but you have to admit, the quality is super). Ricci was just too fast, with this tempo he managed to pull off 99% of the note and with almost perfect intonation there. How does it even possible for a human being! Truly master of the violin technique at all time.
