El Camino Santiago Portugues on Bikes
We loved the Camino Santiago Frances so we decided to do it again on a different route. It was just as much fun and as interesting through Portugal and southern Spain. Which way next ?

We took six days at approximately 50km per day. A lot of it is fairly easy riding but there are some difficult sections too, which makes it interesting. We had a strong headwind when we set out along the coast which was hard work. The second day wasn't windy and much easier. Closer to Santiago there is some steep sections and some rough patches through the forests. It would be nice to take more time and do less km per day but we only had a week. Enjoy

How many days did it take, and what was the average mileage/kilometerage? We're studying which route best to take based on our fitness level (or lack of it).

We didn't need to do much. We ride bikes regularly but shorter distances so we just did a few 20km rides as prep. We only rode for half the day, found accommodation, then relaxed. A pilgrims meal, look around the town, and early to bed. Early to rise, and ride in the cool part of the day helps too. It was fun and easy most of the time. Some of the uphills were hard work but racing down them again was fun. It was an amazing journey, so good we are on our way to do the coastal camino from porto in portugal to Santiago right now. Have fun.

I don't think this video will motivate many to follow suite. This is the problem riding a bike. You miss a lot of things as you hurry by. El Acebo deserves more than a "it's a nice place to get a coffee. It's name means holly and is one of the coolest pueblecito along the Camino. It's elevation keeps it cool in the summer. I am not familiar with all the specialised models. We rented them and were very happy with them. They were the Chisel model, aluminium frame with 29 inch wheels and front shocks. Yours is a gravel bike which should be ok. A lot of the trail is smooth dirt surface and some gravel roads. There are some rough sections which are very rocky but if you take it easy should be ok. Have fun.

Hi Jack Sounds like an amazing journey you have ahead. The guide book we used is "Village to Village guide Camino De Santiago by Anna Dintaman and David Lantis" It covers the whole route from St. Jean to Santiago and to Finisterre. There are many other books available but we chose this because it is small and is a convenient size to carry in a pouch on the handlebars or frame so it is readily accessible. We got it from "Book Depository" Take it easy and enjoy the ride. cheers Andy
