Interesting... you might have luck on AliExpress. Sometimes they can build to surprising specifications. Sometimes they ignore them though :(

This sounds amazing. I wonder how you would get a Low F# string, just tuning it down would make it very wobbly.

@@BassCave7 I agree with that. I've had a wait before I could get into the focus of instruments. And I underestimated how important music is for mental health. Hopefully it's not upsetting to hear about the Ibanez I modified. I intend to learn to build the bass. I've built a couple guitars and I couldn't be more happy with them. Pretty soon I'll attempt to built a bass.

Ouh you are right, I already found out a while back. I was really disappointed because the bass did not look like a knock off like they usually have on AliExpress. They had a brand name "Flyoung" so I thought it was original. Sadly still a copy, I will buy them no more. Admittedly, the two basses I have, 6 string, 6 string fretless are really tops, play well, sound great. The electronics were completely disfunctional, butbeasy to replace.

Hey Mario, I agree as much winding as possible (without a mess) sometimes I make a bad judgement and it's close. :) My teacher back in the day told me this way the strings hold the tuning better. And when you have more winding the string comes from a lower position to the nut, thus having a stronger angle causing less unwanted resonance.

@@BassCave7 Actually I also went with similar winding earlier. I'm still not certain about it. But the extra winding seems to add tension. I guess guys might argue it but it's personal preference. There's different directions you can take instruments and most lend itself to a certain tonal direction. I definitely like the extra down tension sometimes but it's not totally nessasery. You know changing the tuners might be good for better down tension like you mentioned. Gotoh tuners are great because of the taper they provide the strings. Well different instruments work with different hardware.

Thank you for the insight! I once had a Dean Edge 8 string bass. Apart from the noisy pickups, which I replaced, this one was a dream to play. I rue the day I sold it. It is surprising to hear your one was fine, the neck joint just seems to be simply planned wrong. All that I can fault on mine after my repair jobs is just one bum fret. Let me figure out how to fix that :)

@@BassCave7 I'm glad that you featured the eight string. And I have no clue about the neck joint. I'll be interested to see how you shimmed the neck. I don't know how common it is to have a neck joint problem. And I wonder if the shim changes the sustain at all. Also the Dean twelve string has active EMG pickups and a brass nut. And if ever you're in Oregon you could check out my basses.

I live in Australia, so much for popping by. But you will laugh, I have frequent dealings in Oregon, out data center is there. I there a lot, but only virtually :))

@@BassCave7 And I recognize the talent you have. And humans are not all the same. As basic as my comments are, there's a formula to the coherence. I'll watch the shimming video, but for right now I really think you could let the eight string dry a while. Maybe you could eliminate the shim later. Hi Hever, I just had a look at Panga Panga, it is related to Wenge, which I once had bass with. They gave those natural grooves and cavities like here www.talkbass.com/media/panga-panga-fretboard.23456/ which might be a challenge to fill up with epoxy. It might require some extra coats to get it completely flush. But Epoxy is quite a miracle substance, hard and flexible to a degree.

This is a surprise Schecter has the same problem. I did not go for Schecter because of the two batteries and the looks to be honest. I had Dean Edge 8 string, that one was a dream, they don't build them anymore... :( I rue the day I sold it.

@@BassCave7 The Schecter Riot Series is available as a four and a five, and I think that it needed to have a more reinforced neck for the eight string configuration for it to have adequate stability. It really isn't bad for a bass that costs so much less than a Ken Smith.

Wow I have to try that one. I observed a few people who refuse to the strings off fully.

It's a great piece isn't it. I could work on it forever to get just right.

@@BassCave7 Inventions 1, 8 and 13 are lots of fun. I think they feel good to play because Bach stuck pretty close to scales in those pieces and those shapes seem to roll naturally of of my hands. Also, I am striving to create bass runs which are stand alone phrases in their own right, yet mesh with the treble part.

Hi Jim, harvesting classical music for licks is a great idea :) I found a collection of Bach inventions and other pieces arranged for bass recorder - of all instruments. But they are cleverly done, a lie well on the bass. Google should point you to it I believe.

All a question of what's available :) I had to wait for 2 years for that one (OK, during COVID) Schecter was the only other alternative, and they have the same problem as it would seem.

@@BassCave7 I would take the approach by addressing 2 camps. There are seasoned and advanced players in camp A. In camp B you have the amateurs and beginners. If you address camp B and produce content for that demographic in a sequence that scales up you can monetize that demographic by having ppl sign up. Just a suggestion.

@@BassCave7 LTD seems to have good electrical components, noise free. It's probably the best starter six string. I love basses. Maybe not the string space you might desire. But for where I'm at the LTD six string is really all I need for a six string. I had the opportunity in 2022 to get into owning instruments. I got some killer deals. I'm really happy with everything I got. I didn't send anything back. Anyway I'm from Oregon so cheers from Oregon country! And you can think of Oregon as a home. A home after your native birth place. It's got good potential and it's relatively safe.

Yes westerners exploiting those cheap Chinese workers is a bit of a topic. 1. No to Temu forced labour 2. This kind of production is the core of the Chinese wealth and economic growth 3. Most companies produce in China or similar anyway for cheap money as well. Difficult. I think it's good to stay mindful of it.

This is great, the old Fenders are a force to be reckoned with. I have a 70s Vintera Jazz Bass, good copy. I keep getting back to it.

I had an incredible Cort Curbow fretless back in the late 90s that had an untreated Ebonol fretboard. It still managed to get fairly chewed up using roundwounds after a few years. No idea how well it would take an epoxy treatment but it'd prob be worth trying.

For the fretboard I used standard epoxy from the hardware store, not even an expensive one. I believe I did not get a single working electronic piece from AliExpress. They even get the jack sockets wrong. I would buy proper quality when it comes to electronics.

That jack socket was cheap but cost a lot of nerves. Tuners might need replacing as well. But overall I am pretty happy.

I am anything but an expert on electronics. I had a few mystery cases myself.
