Fingerstyle guitarist rooted in the British folk-baroque tradition, a mix of own and others arrangements. Dark classical, folk horror, some theme music, and whatever contemporary stuff takes my fancy. Aiming to post a new video at least once a month.

Horn Dancing album trailer #2 - Mike Fowler
It has been said in British folklore that the devil has all the best tunes. Well, we shall see....
Many years ago, I wanted to learn classical guitar arrangements of some quite haunting and beautiful pieces of music that I was hearing. But the sheet music didn't exist.
At the same time, I had arranged the theme from the folk horror film 'Witchfinder General', in a very loose fashion and added a variation to it, and someone who knew Nicky Henson an actor in the film, commented that they had spoken to Henson about the music, who in turn said that Michael Reeves, the cult film director, had told Paul Ferris the composer that he wanted something along the lines of Greensleeves. I realised that Greensleeves worked very well, tagged onto the end of it.
I then discovered the music from the film Gawain and the Green Knight from 1972 by Ron Goodwin, there was no sheet music for that either, and the film itself was deleted. There were similarities between that and Witchfinder, and so I thought I might be able to make a short suite going from Gawain to Witchfinder and then to Greensleeves in the final part.
This set me off on the road to arrange these pieces, and others, in the same vein of haunting and beautiful melancholia, sometimes soft, sometimes powerful such as with Danse Macabre, Night On Bald Mountain (used in Asylum, the classic Amicus film from 1972) or Devil's Dance (by the film composer John Williams), which to my knowledge have never been arranged for solo guitar before.
I heard the theme from 'A Study In Terror' (1965) by the composer John Scott (who was the first non Beatle to play on a Beatles record) and emailed him for the sheet music, but fair play to him, he looked and couldn't find it, suggesting I have a go at transcribing it myself without the sheet music. I think it worked out really well in the end, it fits in perfectly with the theme of 'Horn Dancing'.
Amongst the others, there are eerie pieces like the theme from 'Blood On Satan's Claw' that I felt would work quite well on solo guitar, and then there is the title track, a very spooky melody indeed, based on one of the earliest known Morris Dances.
Others include 'Summer Is Icumen In' which I first heard from the folk horror film 'The Wicker Man', arranged with advice from John Renbourn (a very long time ago) to do it in an avant-garde style, and the title theme from 'Far From The Madding Crowd' by Richard Rodney Bennett, a truly lovely piece of music.
And so we have Horn Dancing. An eclectic mix of haunting and beautiful music. The mastering is done, tracks are complete.
Released 27 May 2024. All copyright licences acquired. All streaming and digital platforms worldwide.

Chi Mai (Ennio Morricone) - Classical Guitar arrangement

I have been drawn to the work of Ennio #Morricone far more than any other modern composer in recent years, and arranged this for guitar many many years ago, though I've since deleted that video. Chi Mai is simply a beautiful piece of music, written in 1971, and which surprisingly, no doubt to him as well, went to number 2 in the UK charts in 1981 as a result of it being the theme from the BBC s...

The classical guitar work 'Winter Story', by the Polish composer Miroslaw Drozdzowski, is a delightful piece of modern classical guitar repertoire for any time of year, but I do find it captures the essence of this present cold climate quite well. I found it in the Trinity Guitar Syllabus, it works well as an exercise for the left fingers, and a nice tremelo study for the index and middle finge...

The Partita number 1 for violin was composed in 1720 by Johann Sebastian Bach. The Sarabande from this suite is a very nice piece to play for classical guitar, and has been done many times. This is my Bach no 3 of the last three days, I hope you have enjoyed them.
Air on the G string; (Air from Suite No 3 in D major, BWV 1068 - J.S Bach) - classical guitar

The Air on the G string is the nickname given to the Air from Suite No 3 in D major by Bach, from an arrangement done over a hundred years ago by August Wilhelmj, that reduced the orchestral score to four instrumental lines. It lowered the melody so that a lot of it could be played on the violin's G string - hence the name. This is my own arrangement, my first, written about fifteen years ago -...
Bourree in E minor, from Suite in E minor BWV 996 (J.S. Bach)

A bourrée was a type of dance that originated in France with quick duple meter and an upbeat. Though the bourrée was popular as a social dance and shown in theatrical ballets during the reign of Louis XIV of France, the Bourrée in E minor was not intended for dancing. Nonetheless, some of the elements of the dance are incorporated in the piece. It's a standard of the classical guitar repertoire...

This is the first release from an album #HornDancing that I will be releasing in 2024. All of the arrangements are brand new for classical and folk guitar, and have a certain #folkhorror, haunting feel to them. Live and Let Die is from the 1973 James Bond film of the same name, written by Paul and Linda McCartney for the band Wings, with the orchestra arranged by George Martin. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen - fingerstyle guitar

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is apparently from the 16th Century (not quite mediaeval but close enough). Early versions had the lyrics as "Sit you merry gentlemen". The historic meaning of the phrase God rest you merry is 'may God grant you peace and happiness'; the Oxford English Dictionary records uses of this phrase from 1534 onwards. It appears in Shakespeare's 1599 play "As You Like It" I'v...
How To Play The Gael (Last Of The Mohicans) - fingerstyle guitar with tab

The Last Of the Mohicans Theme purloined from Dougie Maclean's The Gael by Trevor Jones, is a good fingerstyle guitar piece to learn, as its a great tune, its a good exercise in hammer on's and pull offs, and it's only harmonically three chords in the same sequence repeated throughout. You can build up the speed and it can become an impressive party piece that most people will recognise. I've a...

The Danse Macabre is an eight minute piece, which has taken me a long time to arrange for classical guitar. My arrangement of Life on Mars? by David Bowie, probably one of the best pop songs ever written, itself based on a sequence of chords from a tune written by Jacques Revaux (for a French song, "Comme d'habitude" - which became 'My Way' when Paul Anka revisited the lyrics). i recorded it over ten years ago on youtube as a #fingerstyle piece, but it works equally well on #classicalguitar #bowie

Lo those many decades ago, had I had this good man as my guitar teacher, I might have been somebody. Funny how life works. Mr. Fowler exudes a Zen master-like calm and steadiness, and no trace of ego.
I really like that. Thanks very much. I used to teach back in the 90s, may go back to it someday. I'm tempted to pin your comment, but then that might be seen as showing a bit of ego 😉. All the very best to you
@@MikeFowlerguitars You are welcome. I've worked on CG off and on for many years, and I can play most of it, but the fine points have eluded me; however, I saved your video and I'm going back to work on it. You should teach because you have the gift. Onward!
@user-lh3iw7tg7q Will, you're a star. Any tips, any advice, give me a shout.
@@MikeFowlerguitars Mike old sport, Davey Graham's "Anji" is one I can play pretty well. I copped Paul Simon's arrangement to some extent and then freewheeled my own version. Do you play it?
It's here Will. czcams.com/video/QoxBeQy8mhw/video.htmlsi=h_RGl4kMQNUW6hWe Just listened to it for the first time in ages. I remember when I recorded it trying to get the timing right. Had to keep listening to the Davy Graham version, I think some of the timing was peculiar from the beginning. Have you recorded your version?
I like the sound of this, Mike. Something of an epic project - congrats on finishing it!
It was indeed Keith. I'm glad it's done!
Fantastic player! Bravo!🎉
Thank you very very much!
Thanks for this. I've learned the fingering but this gives me the feel.Beautifully played. Clannad recorded this on there first album in english. The producer I believe insisted they had to have at least one song on the album in english not Gaelic. Here it is. I also saw a youtube clip of Judy Garland from a movie in the thirties sing the song. Strange rhythm. Enough.
Thank *you* Thomas for your interesting comment there. I remember playing this 15 years ago, and a gentleman there knew the Judy Garland version, not knowing it was an Irish air first. I didn't know about the Garland version at all. I also didn't know Clannad had recorded it, I've been listening to them a lot recently as I'm rewatching Robin of Sherwood. I'm going to try and find their version now. Always learning, and that is good. That's why we're here I suppose. This arrangement is by Duck Baker. All the very best to you.

wow now that is a great classical version of Life On Mars .
That's very kind of you to say so Robert, I appreciate it.
Amazing. My next challenge. Thanks man.
There's only a few bars that might be a problem, I find them a problem still. You just have to take it real slow and get the rhythm right. Make sure you use the same fingers on the right hand each time. I'm not going to tell you which ones to use, that's up to you, but when you settle on right fingers that enable you to play comfortably, use the same ones each time. Classical guitarists call them i m and a. Copy the notation out and write them in. All the best to you
I guess I'll never find the notes but you play great.
This piece is in the Trinity college exam book for grade 6. At least it used to be. It's a lovely piece isn't it? I'd like to find more compositions by this composer. Thanks very much for stopping by 👍
@@MikeFowlerguitars Thank you so much for information.
Exceedingly good piece with cunningly syncopated variations. Was it Mr Kipling? Tenuous link: czcams.com/video/G8yqRBGw1Ys/video.html
Hahaha. I think it was. John said they never used it. He was a genius at composition wasn't he? Thanks very much for commenting, I'll look at your link
@@MikeFowlerguitars You are probably too young to remember and I am getting too old to remember. I have a vague recollection of this piece on TV with folk in courtly Tudor garb eating 'exceedingly good cakes'. I bought LPs and then CDs, and recently the music book via a well-known Internet auction house. I need to practise the variations more. Clive Carroll doesn't include this lovely piece on his excellent John Renbourn 2-CD set. JR was a modest genius as a composer, performer and improviser. I saw him perform an inspiring and flawless gig just once at Pitlochry Festival Theatre with Jacqui McShee (who had a cold) a few years before he died.
@fastidioussloth6013 Yes I thought that as well, about the recent Clive Carroll set. I don't know why, he must have considered it. If I remember, I'll ask him next time I see him. That book is fantastic. I very much recommend getting to grips with it. I've been reviewing some of my old sheet music files recently, and I note that I converted all the medieval pieces into tablature back in the early 90s, when I borrowed a copy of the book. I never got round to learning those medieval ones, Trotto, Saltarello etc. I also managed to find a copy (though they are now quite rare) about 12 years ago, before the price went daft, and got John to sign it for me. You can see the signed copy in a video I did for the Alman duet. If you type John Renbourn Alman into the search bar you'll find it. That's another one that Clive didn't include, which I thought they might, given that it's a lovely little piece and would have suited him and Daz on the tour.
Lovely tone Mike. Nice tremolo. I have been struggling developing a tremolo on a steel string guitar. Well done you. 👍
Thanks a lot Al my old cyber friend. Hope you're well. This is a nice exercise for tremelo as you're not using your ring finger, just im. And the music probably sounds even nicer played a little slower.
