Welcome! Hang out and see what I'm currently working on
It's mainly motorcycles at the moment but there's going to be lots of other small projects here and there. I'm not a professional motorcycle mechanic or restoration expert by any means, I've been a Millwright for roughly 25 years so that might give me a bit of a leg up when it comes to dealing with some of the mechanical stuff I tinker with but most things I learn along the way.

Just bought one that is having ignition , compression and brake caliper issues . It’s probably more than that though im not sure yet. Was $100 id say its worth the effort
Awesome! your compression issues might sort themselves out if it hasn't run in awhile but $100 is just too good to pass up 😎
@@DocJonesGarage yep , first time fixing a bike and your vids are a great help ! Thanks 🔧🙏
Hey! Your videos have been big help for me putting 2 sets of carbs back together! Can you provide where you found the guy who was making the wiper ring for the linkage on the carbs? Mine are missing or split.
That's great! I'll see if I can dig that link up for you.
www.ebay.com/itm/166199866265 These are felt rings like what my carb has, double check the size your looking for If I remember this next link is the person that I found before motorcycleproject.com/text/felt_seals.html They say they sell them but I didn't see a link to a spot to buy them, might have to contact them. Hope that helps
Thanks a bunch!
Will it work on old baby teats from baby feeding bottles
I'm not too sure, but it is toxic so do your research, thanks for watching
I don’t know that you really want to make caburettor boots too soft, seeing as they have to support the weight of the carburettors.
Agree 100 percent!
Thank You, I was stuck and you set me free
wow this build is incredible!! It has been two years now. How is it holding up? Would you do it again or would you suggest buying a used Harbor Freight and converting it?
It's holding up great, I would definitely build it this way again! I'm in the process of making a slight modification to the holding tank which I'll share the details of when it's finished and tested. Thanks for watching!
Any updates?
Yes I hope to have one soon!
Hi! Awesome explication! Where did you buy those felt wiper rings?
Hello! I didn't replace the wiper rings but they are available online, they just looked "newer" because I cleaned the carb body before I realized they were in there. Thanks for watching!
Has anyone tried it to mix it with engine oil in hopes of it restoring seals of engine and reducing oil leaking and burning? Kinda like poor mans AT-205?
Interesting thought, I've never heard of anyone trying it. If I do I'll share the results. Thanks for watching!

@@DocJonesGarage And if you do share I will definitely watch and comment!
I have jugs of Peppermint, Euculiptis, and Lavendar oils.......do you think that one of these would also work??? Got a hard and shrunken air box rubber duct on a '72 Kowasakki F7 that I am restoring.
Honestly I couldn't say, would be worth testing out on something that's not too valuable though, and if you do let me know how it works. Thanks for watching! and good luck!
@@DocJonesGarage Well, I tried twice soaking the darn rubber duct in super hot water. It fits over a 2.5 inch round opening on the air box, and a 3 inch opening on the engine case. The heat got the rubber soft, but the opening size is still too small. First try was a total failure. Second heat try, and I barely managed to get the lower 3 inch opening onto the case, and then slashed my thumb real bad with a small pic tool trying to pry the top portion onto the air box. DOH!!!! I guess I will take it off and try some peppermint oil and whiskey on it (maybe for my thumb too). (I had this rubber duct off for 6 years due to life forcing me to put a hold on the restoration project......so, you dont want to remove rubber parts like this and just put in a box.)
Thanks for the update!
In a pinch find the wintergreen infused alcohol. It's a bit harder to find in the CVS/Walgreens but it's there. Definitely stinks big time of wintergreen. I did spring for the Green Health Wintergreen and will do my mixing with the 'green' alcohol. Try it straight if you like.
I went with the natural wintergreen mainly because I was trying to see if it might not swell the rubber as much, and I could control the ratio a bit easier. As you saw it still does swell just takes longer and maybe not as much.
Did that alcohol worked for you kd350 ? I tried one that was 50% and it worked slightly, i may need tk get the stronger 70% alcohol one
One can acquire wintergreen infused isopropyl alcohol and is the same price as straight alcohol. I figure perhaps I can dilute 1 to 5 using the iso...I'm paying $45 for 16 oz/473cc's worth.
I'd like to do a head to head experiment with the infused alcohol to see what the differences might be, thanks for watching!
12.26.23. ☕️That docking plate you use to mount the carburetor bank to work on, is quite enterprising❗️
Thanks! there's a couple of changes I'll make to it but it saved me wrestling with it on the work bench that's for sure
I was wondering if you would recommend using the wintergreen oil on float bowl gaskets. They are old and kind of stiff but have no cracks and I would think could be used if the flat spots would go away.
If they are rubber gaskets that your trying to preserve for whatever reason then I'd say it's worth trying for sure, I'd still inspect them carefully afterwards to make sure there isn't any cracks in the rubber. If they swell up a bit just let them sit for a couple of days and they will shrink down a bit.
I have some Honda CT 90 rubber parts soaking in the mixture right now, thanks for your video and the update.
That's great! thanks for watching
Super Video, thanks from Germany!! The springs - assembly is really awful!
Thanks, yes the spring linkage is tricky. If I helped one person get it together it was all worth it!
Methyl Salicylate is the same chemical, organic, farm-raised, or synthesized.
Great job mate.
Thank you!
😎👍😎 Is there any difference in cleaning between vapor blasting and sonic cleaning..??
Yes, I used the ultrasonic to help loosen up any old fuel that was left inside that would affect the operation of the carb and also help degrease it (simple green) the vapour blaster is mainly for cleaning the outside and get at all the impossible to get at areas so I could make it look new again. Works great on Aluminum parts. Thanks for watching!
👍😎👍
It works well, did the same thing with the wintergreen oil, we heat our solution slightly. 😁
I think using a little bit of heat with the wintergreen/Alcohol might be my next test, just not too much heat 🔥
Thanks for watching everyone! One thing I should have made note of in the video, I didn't grease the new bearings because I will be taking everything apart again for painting which I'll be doing at that point.
you didn't grease the bearing is it not required
Yes it is, I still need to paint all those parts so it will be coming apart again. Just wanted to avoid grease getting all over everything. Thanks for watching!
you think this can work on hardened rubber shoe soles?
I can't see why not, they would smell like peppermint for awhile though. Some thoughts: You have to figure out how not to soak the whole shoe You would have to monitor them closely so as to not have them swell up If you haven't watched it I made a follow up to this video link above Thanks for watching!
@@DocJonesGarage thanks for the tips! i'll definitely give it a try

Thanks! I try to anyway 😁 still trying to get over the fact it's been 2 years already...
Great video! I need to try this! Off to your previous video on the process.
Thanks BJ! It works great, good solution for those hard/impossible to find parts
Thanks Doc that's a great follow-up! It's always nice to have updates on experiments to see how things work out 👍😊
Thanks Chris, a comment on the first video sparked the idea I figured it was overdue, cheers!
Thanks Doc! Where do you get the wintergreen oil?

@@DocJonesGarage My pleasure, I just got done reconditioning mine having watched your video, it's looking good. I painted mine for added extra sex appeal
Awesome work as usual, Doc! I'm jealous of the blast cabinet and your range of tools. I've got a KZ1000 project that needs the complete going over like your Honda is getting. I wish you were closer to PA! Cheers
Thanks Jon, yes the vapour blaster really does help with those tricky pieces, It's got alot more work to do!
@@DocJonesGarage Right on!
Nice to see you back at it Doc! Excellent & thorough work as usual! 😊👍
Thank you Chris, yes time to get stuck back in!
He's back! Nice work. I need a blast cabinet like that xD
Thanks Zach, yes the cabinet is great for aluminum parts. Just need a 5+ HP compressor. Your new bike is looking awesome!
Doc back out in the garage.
Yes I've been in front of the computer more than in the garage but time to get back to work!
This is super exciting. I'm heading out tomorrow to look at my Dad's old 1978 750k and see if I can't get it running. The ignition switch needs to be replaced, but then I'm going to change the oil and see if it'll kick over. Poor thing has been sitting for well over a decade, so my fingers are crossed I don't run into a ton of problems and it kicks over. I'll have to watch the rest of your videos on this bike.
Hopefully it goes good for you, these old Hondas want to run. Thanks for watching!
@@DocJonesGarage Nah, no such luck. Don't know if it's not getting spark, or the kick starter won't start the engine with a dead battery. Can't get the seat open to replace the battery without drilling out the lock for the seat since the only person who knew where the keys were has been dead for almost a decade.
Wow nice motorbike doc Jones
Great video! On the forums 15yrs ago or so this was fairly common but few ever return to give a long term review of the process. Do they harden up in a couple years, etc?
So far I haven't noticed them starting to stiffen back up again.
hey nice job! i have a severe vacuum leak on the same set of carbs. gonna have to pull them apart after a rebuild. can you get just normal o-rings to be installed instead of the felt ones? i wish you included some shots of the o-rings on the throttle shafts and choke shafts lol
I just had a look at another carb I have that's partially disassembled (a PD41b) and removed the seal on the throttle shaft, it's actually a small lip seal instead of the felt ones that were in the video. I don't know the history of this carb but the measurements (best I could tell) on the seal are 14mm outside dia 10mm inside dia and about 2.5 mm deep. maybe that helps? I'll see if I can find the choke o-ring measurements I'll include them here.
@@DocJonesGarage hey i just had them split apart last night and i see the lip seals. mine are totally collapsed, the lips are not touching the shafts at all. i fired some o-rings in there and the vacuum leak appears to be gone, but i have a odd idle still. will investigate further with my new sync guage set.
Your vapor blasting was very informative. Do you run any risk of wearing out any of the mating surfaces or gasket areas. Thank you.
No, I'd say that's the main benefit of vapour blasting if you were worried at all you can always use fine glass bead instead of something courser, thanks for watching!
@@DocJonesGarage I will build my own vapor blaster now, thanks to your video. Instead of buying one of the commercial vapor blaster, I can now build my own and save a lot of money. Thank you.
Hi great video, @13min 10 sec you mention that the pump is 3/4 HP - the rating plate says 9.8A at 120V which is 9.8 x 120 = 1,176W. As 1HP = 746W your pump is 1,176 / 746 = 1.58 HP. Hoping this info helps others…
Think this would work on the outsoles of shoes made with rubber?
I don't see why not, I'd try a sample piece first if possible or if you tried the whole sole I'd closely monitor it, even 24 hours makes a noticeable difference. The oil might complicate any gluing process so those areas might have to be cleaned really well. Thanks for watching!
@@DocJonesGarage Great thanks for the quick reply!
@@Greanestbean no problem, if you try it let me know how it works
Interesting!! I use regular engine oil. I'll lube up the rubber part with a little oil on my gloves and rub it in for a few seconds, wipe off the excess and let it sit for a a few minutes before I re-install the parts!! It seems to work quite well!! The only thing I wouldn't do that to are the old o-rings! They're already flattened out and stretched a bit so...they will only expand more with the fresh oil!! I just replace them!!
Thanks for watching!
Did you test one with just alcohol ?
No, but that's a good idea. Thanks for your comment!
Will it work on silicone rubber such as hardened valve cover gasket?
Good question! I have not had the opportunity to try silicone rubber yet, might be a good follow up video, thanks for watching!
Great job. This may come in handy on my RZ projects.
Thanks! I'm sure it would, you can cover the cost of the wintergreen pretty quickly depending on how how many parts you need done.
