Saw a top 10 list of Filipino actresses online and in my opinion, except for Angel Locsin, Christine Reyes and Julia Montes the rest can only play the saccharine sweet characters at varying degrees of competence. I’m sorry to say that when I tried to come up with actresses who truly deserves to be in the top 10 for their versatility, authenticity and ability to captivate an audience, I came up with only 8. In no particular order, I have Sylvia Sanches, Irma Adlawan, Mylene Dizon, Angel Locsin, Christine Reyes, Jasmine Curtis, Julia Montes and Andrea Brillantes. For the gents, I could think of only six; Noni Buencamino, Tirso Cruz, John Arcilla, John Lloyd Cruz, Carlos Aquino and Elijah Canlas. Most actors excel at playing one kind of character (Judy Ann), some are inconsistent (Jericho Rosales) and some whist never putting a toe wrong acting wise would never set the world on fire with their performance (Piolo Pascual). Although I’ve only seen Angel play a nice girl, she played every character differently as this is not a nice girl factory that they should all turn out the same. Different teleseryes, different characters that should be played differently. With so very few truly gifted actors, I’m gobsmacked that they are not writing their own tickets or accorded the respect and recognition they deserve. Or maybe it is exactly for that reason. The mediocre actors dominating the industry are banding together to keep the talented out, so their meagre light is not obscured by the brilliance of the truly gifted.
