Song Dog - Nature Documentary
Photographed over a ten-year period in Yellowstone's Lamar River Valley, this film presents sequences showing coyote behavior in an environment where large mammals are abundant and human influence is minimal. Calling the howling coyote Song Dog, an Indian woman describes coyotes as sly 'creators' which control everything, 'tricksters' which make other animals give up their food. Ranging from the arctic to the tropics, the coyote usually lives in packs with it's permanent mate and young, defending it's territory and eating small rodents and larger weakened animals such as elk or moose. Coyote pups are observed learning about their world under constant supervision of their parents. Rare scenes show members of a coyote pack cooperating with each other to steal a bear cub away from it's mother, a coyote getting a large fish away from an otter, coyotes chasing elk, pronghorn and bighorn sheep, trying to isolate old or weakened animals.

This is the story of how the Coyote - at once revered and reviled - has learned to adapt across diverse landscapes. While grizzlies and wolves narrowly missed extinction, the coyote has earned its status today as top dog. That Coyote is just hunting to stay alive, and if you don’t want them eating your animals there are plenty of HUMANE ways to deter them. And what are you even doing with those coyotes? Probably not making use of the body and just wasting that poor Things life. The Coyote is killing for life, your killing for less of an inconvenience. Around 3:00

    A scientifically designed liquid that can be air dropped (think agent orange) or spiked into food that sterilizes coyotes, and coyotes ONLY. Place spiked meat near coyote heavy areas and spray/crop dust their habitats. This would help cull the population greatly. Just gotta make damn sure the chemical cannot affect any other creature. Cities and parks are filled with snow flake people that wouldn't think about hurting the poor creatures so there you have it. Jeeezzzz I am not even a wildlife biologist. The immediate reaction of humans is always to "eradicate". Not methods to deter, that's never the first thought. It's to kill and not just kill, but completely destroy every living creature that is inconvenient to them. They casually mention that the humans cleared out the wolves, like garbage. Wolves naturally kill coyotes. What happens now? Another, far larger imbalance that they brought upon themselves.

    • @ShikokuFoodForest
      @ShikokuFoodForest Před rokem

      You are unfortunately right. It is extremely selfish and actually very ignorant of us humans to kill for our convenience. In the 1930s, an ecologist was determined to discover what caused the destruction of trees including very important riparian habitat. In fact, the whole landscape was struggling to grow. What was discovered was this time in history was the exact same time as wolves, the areas top predators were eradicated for the convenience of humans raising livestock. It wasn’t until 70 years later when the wolves were re-introduced and many trees and vegetation started growing again, that it was discovered the over-population of prey such as deer and elk were completely decimating the vegetation causing much ecological destruction. The exact same situation has happened when humans moving into mountain lion’s territory caused them to migrate to a new area. Lesson learned - top predators are critical in conservation to increase the capacity of land for self renewal. We must learn to live with, rather than in constant conflict with, top predators for our very survival. Time to stop playing God. We often do much more harm, and often very serious harm, rather than good.

    This does not show any coyotes shape-shifting, merely that coyotes can and do adapt readily to a broad range of environmens, much like crows. However coyotes can and do litterly shapeshift, which I've observed - one moment a large coyote with a younger smaller acolyte blocking the trail ahead stopped me. The smaller coyote disappeared into brush at the side of the trail while the larger coyote stayed where it was. At that point it shape-shifted, becoming a bush. I stared; it remained a bush. Then it vanished. I've seen a pack of coyotes that were watching me vanish when I started throwing rocks. However this lore doesn't seemed to have been passed down.

  • @pokeylope6108
    @pokeylope6108 Před rokem

    Whats crazy about Coyotes, is the more you try to eradicate them, the more pups they give birth to each litter. They literally only used to be in the South West, now from over the past 150 years, have spready to every state besides Hawaii, also they are a type of wolf, we always try to treat them as something different. Also red wolfs are close enough genetically to mate with the coyote, and slowly, the red wolf is being erased, as it increasingly hybradizes with coyote. Soon the red wolf wont even be an animal. The comments posted reflect an ignorance that is remarkable. I mean village idiot kind of ignorance. You can not manage what you do not truly understand. If you try, you just create new problems. Coyotes present a mixture of costs and benefits to humans. In rural areas, Coyotes are a mixed bag. East of the Big Miss Coyotes are actually a hybrid of Wolf-Dog-Coyote and they are large and behave a little differently than pure Coyotes west of the River. Eastern Coyotes can take down Whitetail Deer - which are over populated and inflict crop damage. This is a good thing for humans. However, Coyotes snatch vulnerable calves and other small livestock. In urban settings Coyotes eat a lot of rats. Rats are the primary prey of Coyotes in urban settings. This is a damn good thing. There are really no costs to humans for the presence of Coyotes in cities that I know of. Personally I admire Coyotes. I consider them to be the quintessential American Animal. They are also smarter than the average human - and twice as smart as the average Trump voter.
