The Art of Wildlife Storytelling: Filmmaking on Skomer Island
In this episode, join me as I explore the importance of finding the right story before embarking on a wildlife filmmaking project. I take you behind the scenes to Skomer Island, a stunning wildlife haven, and share how I visited the island a year in advance of my main project to develop a proof of concept.
Discover why this early trip was crucial for determining whether the location offered a viable and compelling story for a full-scale production. From researching the wildlife to understanding the natural environment and behaviors, I discuss how this groundwork laid the foundation for a successful wildlife film.
Learn the steps I took to assess the island's unique biodiversity, the challenges I encountered, and why storytelling is at the heart of impactful wildlife filmmaking. Whether you're an aspiring wildlife filmmaker or simply a nature enthusiast, this journey offers key insights into the creative process and the art of telling nature's stories. 🌿🎥✨

    Was searching for videos exactly like this one ( looked at a few ) and this has given me the best insight.. thank you Could i ask a question please? I am fortunate enough to own a couple of great lenses , the mzuiko 40-150 f2.8 pro , and the mzuiko 150-400 pro I obviously want to maximise my chances of getting " the " shot etc and i saw a previous reply asking if the 100-400 would be good enough! In your opinion, do you think the 40-140 will be the one , or even use the 150-400 ( as you say , it might be a bit too " tight" Thank you , any advice would be appreciated 👍🏻

    • @DrewWebbWild
      @DrewWebbWild Před 29 dny

      @@jayargo2109 if you’re going in the morning, I would absolutely recommend maximising the brighter lens so the 2.8 if you’re going in the afternoon then you can afford to use a longer lens and sacrifice some of the aperture however it all comes down to is whether you want to maximise the resolution of your camera but using a longer focal length to get the tighter shot or whether you’re happy to crop afterwards and get the tighter shop that way using a shorter focal length, I hope that makes sense

    If you come to Norfolk in the winter I recommend Buckenham Marshes RSPB. There are huge numbers of water fowl overwintering then, with Peregrines and marsh harries predating too. Walk along the southern platform of the railway station and you are bound to see Chinese water deer. As a bonus you can visit Strumshaw Fen RSPB which is just next door.

      Not at all what the video was about. My film was about the fact that the undeniable fact conditions, climate and habitat are changing and as such our island wildlife is diversifying and we (fans of wildlife) now get to observe the natural introduction and integration of totally different species. But thanks for trying to share an irrelevant political agenda.

    • @DrewWebbWild

      Thank for watching, The reason for this is the frame rate and shutter speed of the camera. it was shot at 100 fps and using the 180 rule the shutter speed would have been approximately 1/200sec. to achieve the cinematic smooth motion this would then be slowed down to 4x slower than real life but I made the decision to mix slow motion with normal speed so as not to overuse slow motion. I think with any slow motion footage there always needs to be a consideration about story and in this one I liked the mix of the two speeds but it does give that jittering affect with any fast moving subject. Good eye for spotting it!
