Motorcycle and bicycle rides, hiking and even drives in the car. I will also post from some of my other travel adventures, sports and of course, pets. Ring of Fire bicycle races at the Mellodrome /Carrier park in Asheville, NC, June 19, 2024. Finals night of the series, this the 40 3/4 category 30 laps point race, first lap neutral sprint every five laps, four places, double points on last lap. Team Youngblood in Orange has the overall wrapped up but second and third place still in contention.

Brisk fall evening, ride southbound on the Old Yonahlosse Rd, Hwy 221, behind Grandfather Mountain on a BMW1200GS. Built in 1890 paved in 1930 was the only road between Blowing, Rock and Linville NC until Highway 105 was built in the 1950s. This is probably my favorite road in the high country, for bicycling, motorcycling or twisty cruising in a car.

I will be relocating to Iowa soon from Africa and I have chosen a 2024 Honda civic sport model for drive to and from work,what tips can you give me, please note it will be my first time encountering snow driving
Good tires are important. An all weather, at the very least, the more aggressive the tread, even better. Smooth driving input is even more important, throttle, brakes and steering.

This was tremendous. We took Profile up to Calloway Peak last week. Don't think my fear of heights can handle Attic Window or MacRae.
Enjoyed this one. We went to Calloway via Profile last week. Hope to do Daniel Boone Scout in the Fall.

hmmm, no idea there was a velodrome in Asheville, not even a mellow one. Is it used for track events, too?
The New Asheville Speedway, nicknamed “The River,” opened on the site in 1960 as a 1/3-mile dirt track. In 1961, the track was paved and Asheville was treated to exciting short-track races, with the last race in the 1990s as it was shut down, bought out by the city (or Biltmore) I think around 2003 the facility was turned into a park and with help from the cycling community, became a track for cyclists, skaters, walkers. They started holding a mix of fixed gear and geared races on the track, still the original pavement. I've been racing there from the beginning, learned track cycling there. It was repaved once, then a few years ago resurfaced with concrete, all the velodrome lines are on the track and it is a registered 500 meter velodrome. With the new velodrome in Rock Hill SC, the fixed gear races have been rare. The weekly spring series is points race format for geared bikes. Lots of fun and great speedwork.

Mike's has been a favorite of mine for years. A smoke flavor is unmatched.
From the parking lot to the top of the ladders. How long does that take? To get back to the parking lot, do you need to go back down the ladders?
Takes me about 40 minutes to MacCrae Peak, just under 1 mile. That’s the destination point beyond the top of the ladders. I hike very fast, For seasoned hikers, allow at least an hour, give or take depending on your fitness. Can avoid the ladders on return by using the Underwood Trail, only one ladder, but very rugged. Would allow even more time with that route to return.

That's a really tough hike. And yeah I would not do the Underwood Trail as it's tough!! We hiked from Holloway Mountain road to the upper parking lot in Grandfather. Whew wee tough! Good job
