Thank your question. That is a great topic for a video. It may take some time to put one together. In short, we have alluded to an answer to your question with other videos. Some time ago, I mentioned to the audience about a minor league player we worked with who demonstrated 105 mph+ bat speed while hitting a ball off of a batting tee. This player told me that even with 105+ mph bat speed, the baseball looked like a pea to him. Obviously, the issue with him wasn't having enough bat speed but rather, not processing a baseball's speed, space, and the depth it passes through, fast enough. This leads us to an even bigger question than yours, and will probably answer your question. So, here's the big question.., "How does a moving ball, land on a swinging bat?" The answer lies inside the hitting folder that is labeled... HITTING PERCEPTION. The moment a 90mph pitch is delivered, how sharp is your Hitting Perception?
Ted Williams took the first pitch most of the time, and this provided him a mental image of the delivery and timing to better anticipate the best location of contact as early as possible.
Sorry for the delay in replying. Yes, that is a common practice Ted Williams had regarding reading the pitcher's delivery and timing. There was a time back in 2015, BASEBALL AMERICA published an article regarding TROUT, POSEY, DEE GORDAN...and others, when they had 0-0 counts and swung at the first pitch, there batting averages were OVER .500! I wonder what Ted Williams would say about that??
