Surf Launching Southern Africa is an ever-growing library of surf-launching tips and advice. Using real-time launch video to illustrate the points. Which I use to acclimatise and assimilate my students to surf and ocean conditions here in Southern Africa.

Shorebreak Launching Big Boats in Tofo
These guys are consummate professionals because they deal with these shorebreak conditions every single day of their lives.
Nothing that they are doing here is easy and they just do it so well because they practice and practice and practice.
But the interesting thing for me was to observe that these guys all just use one engine when they go into the shorebreak. I spoke to them and they said its so that they don't get confused. Running two engines can be a big problem - can be a big hassle when waves are comin. So yeah just one engine get it going get it get it going well get it warmed up and use that to get through with.

Howzit! I'm interested in launching my Turtle-ski with 6hp Suzuki in the area mostly for some fun on the river but also at sea on the tiny swell days. I have buoyancy cert with cat E. I'm just curious about conditions of the river / depth / how far one can travel up etc etc, Also is the slipway / launch site for public use? And any other useful info would be great, thanks!

Damn that was a shallow launch. Luckily we have the privilege of a 30ft butt Catt incase we need to take a wave broadside or head on. I've noticed that the mono hulls are more manurvrable but when it comes to taking waves....... EISH!!!

I used to launch out that mouth in my 3m duck. Scariest launch one day when the river was in flood. Massive waves on either side of the main current pushing out. 🤦🏻♂️. Not something I would do now with more knowledge
