Pendragon 6th Edition: The Grey Knight Reviewed
Jeff sits down to share his thoughts about The Grey Knight adventure campaign for the new 6th edition of the Pendragon roleplaying game. Originally published in 1986, this was the first adventure published for the venerable RPG of Arthurian legend. This volume also includes two short adventures meant to bridge from the starter set campaign to this classic tale. Should you be excited to have your players embark on a glorious quest? Or has age not been kind to this nearly 40 year old adventure? You'll find out!

For me, OSR should be games or supplements that are mostly compatible with TSR D&D. DCC is totally compatible with old school D&D. The reason why I prefer OSR to have this strict definition is so that if I buy DCC, I'll still be able to play Keep on the Borderlands and have Machinations of the Space Princess ready once the players find that spaceship. If we have more games labeled as OSR just because its old school feel or it's a retroclone of a different out-of-print game, then it'll just make navigating the marketplace a headache. Like buying Zweihander Dark Astral but not being an easy conversion to Metamorphosis Alpha, and having people ask why bother.

The subclass at level three works for all classes except two: Sorcerer and Warlock. Sorcerers are born with their power. Warlocks don't get anything until they have made "The Deal". Those are the only two classes that thematically make no sense to have their subclasses any later than 1st level of the class.

Date night with my wife last night, so I'm catching you on Memorex. I'm definitely curious about that Planet of the Apes RPG. And I like the D6 system. I've got Terra Primate from Eden Studios, but never got it to the table. But I'm a big fan of the Apes films, especially the original films. Also curious about Mothership 1st Ed. I'm iffy on Mothership, based on the original version. Interesting toolkits that I'll probably use for other games, but Alien's game mechanics speak to me more. Free RPG Day is similar to Free Comic Book Day. Depends on the store. The good store in my region lets you pick one thing for showing up, a second thing if you buy something, and a third thing if you stay to play in a game. Another place lets you pick like 5 things. The sort of crappy shop that's closest to me doesn't seem to give a crap, and lets you take anything you want. They only seem to attract D&D/Pathfinder players, who seem completely incurious about other games, so the last time I got there, it was late in the day and they still had tons of everything. I was in Roanoke, VA a couple years ago on Free RPG Day, and one shop made you spend at least $30. before you could get anything, so even though I was planning to spend that much, I just left with nothing, because I thought that was against the spirit of the thing. The other place in town was much more free with their stuff. Twilight 2000 was a game I was always interested in, but I found its mechanics, like pretty much all GDW games, to be clunky and poorly organized (Space 1889 & 2300AD!!!). Maybe one of these days I'll grab the Free League one.

I really like the art in the new edition of the Grey Knight. The adventure itself was pretty much the same, about two-thirds of the book, but the other third had the years 513-514 to bridge over from the Starter Set. And there is a section on Carlion, Arthur's 'capital' before Camelot.

Enjoyed the AMA. Especially with a few of the new people asking older questions, where I'd forgotten some of the answers, so I guess I'm not so new anymore 😂 Really love your ideal game session length is the same as many of my favourites. Tricky now to pull the same all nighters we used to, but there's still nothing better than getting started at 2 in the afternoon and finishing up anytime after midnight. So good to get through complete mysteries with investigations, fights and chases; or delving through full 40+ room dungeons in the same session without truncating it and skipping parts. Far better than having to spend several weeks of hit and miss sessions-especially when notes have been misplaced and half of the party have forgotten the name, location and requirements of that first pivotal NPC contact! Good answer on Forgotten Realms. So much potential in Greenwood's original concept of it being a parallel world at the root of all Earth's myths. It's such a massive, amorphous (yet somehow bovine) beast nowadays, so frequently lacking a distinctive personality. Tricky to get a good hold of the creative reins for individual DMs to give it authenticity when so many people have their own preconceptions coming in from novels, CRPGs and other media. Catch you (probably on the Memorex) next week.

@03dashk64 Yes, that is correct. Women may have fought but not as knights. They may have fought as auxiliary or in desperation. But they wouldn't have lasted long on the battlefield against men. As for in my rpg. I've seen too many men play women as characture of women. I think it's pretty offensive. And when I get a female player. She can play the only woman who is the super duper rare exception.

Brilliant. Cheers for the review. Finally picked up the Starter Set from one of my FLGSs yesterday and will certainly be getting the hardback player/core book. After your description here, this adventure seems like a must for me. Many thanks also for flagging up the existing one-die-roll choke points in the adventure. Good to know. Funnily enough, I think the May Babies narrative makes this one pop for me. I really like how it seems to present the PCs with dilemmas to make real that classic Arthurian tension: the old, unknowable (and undeniable) mystery world of wildness, faeries and pagan magic being inextricably tied into Arthur's court of striving holy knights. How they can yearn to represent a brighter, civilising hope, but even the King must struggle with inevitable guilt and doubt that comes from holding transcendent ideals and aspirations, whilst taking authority over the worlds of profane flesh and ancient earthly magic and superstition. I think that's probably why the myth has constantly been renewed, reworked and remained relevant to so many societies throughout history. And why it's definitely a living myth, so the 'historically accurate' crew might need to adjust the holodeck parameters!

@@alexpartenopei1021 There will be three main ones for Arthur: Boy King + Conquest (i.e. Arthur defeats his challengers and foes) Romance + Tournament (the realm is at peace so time for the knights to ride out in search of adventure and quests!) Grail + Twilight (things go really bad and the Grail Quest ends up just delaying the downfall, but it is a glorious downfall) Each will be about twenty years (i.e. a generation), so it is easier for the GMs to pick up one, play through it, and then come for another, or just pick their preferred time period and stick to it.

Having started running the GPC a few years ago, and just getting to the end of the Uther period, I'm kind of happy to be able to just dip into just the required parts, although admittedly several volumes would probably have a staggered release, and I might end up constantly being a period ahead. That said, this Grey Knight campaign has some nice details on Carlion, which plays a part in my players' current Utherion adventure, so it's been great to get some unexpected inspiration for that.

Loved this topic. Thanks, Jeff. Great picks too. Makes me wonder if Fables could be an interesting spin-off (alt-slipcase) for City of Mist. CoM has PbtA roots, but there's definitely a lot of shared DNA in the premise. - - - - A couple of my favourite recent RPG comics adaptations are Lazarus (for Green Ronin's AGE system), Carbon Grey (Magnetic d6), Kieron Gillen's Die RPG (Rowan, Rook & Decard), and Imagining Games take on the 'mad as a box of chogs' (spelling intentional and they might be mailable in the US!) CHEW comics - PDF is out and physical books soon. * I've been quite surprised that The Amory Wars (by Claudio Sanchez of Coheed and Cambria fame) hasn't ever been adapted and released as a RPG so far. Highly immersive and rich setting with a whole available backing soundtrack - able to dish out spoilers in the background. Rick Remender's Black Science seems like another IP that could make a brilliant RPG, with the premise of an interdimensionally lost party of characters trying to get home through innumerable alien, dark realms. Both would definitely work well in SWAdE, although The Amory Wars could be a great Year Zero variant.

He once had to deliver 500 chicks to a village that can only be reached by air in a small Cessna plane. The sedation wore off on the flight. The cheep cheep cheep drove him completely balmy. It was two days before he could get in the plane and fly home. He trumped that a few years later with a 400 lb calf in the back seat. Both the sedation failed and the it broke loose inside the 4 seater plane. He called in an emergency landing with the cow heard over the radio. The cow got instant landing permission. He never got a word in on the radio call.

Interesting topic for the upcoming episode. I'll be catching it on Memorex, as I've got Traveller tonight. Two I thought of right away were Hellboy/B.P.R.D. & Elfquest, but both have had RPGs in the past. Same with Judge Dredd and Flash Gordon. Fatale is basically a Call of Cthulhu campaign. Metabarons is pretty much extra-crispy Dune. Morbus Gravis would be a cool setting if you dropped most of the weird sex stuff. Manifest Destiny has a lot of potential, as does East of West. The 2012 relaunch of Prophet got away from the superhero vibe of the original and went for a more trippy Sci-Fi epic kind of thing, which could be cool.

  • @matthewconstantine5015

Feeling unappreciated, and doing 90+% of the work to actually get players to a session, are the things that I think burn me out the most. I've been having an absolute devil of a time herding cats over the last few years. Only been able to get two, three, or four games in a year (in person). And I definitely agree with offloading some of the responsibilities. When running Ars Magica, it was invaluable having some players who took on certain aspects of the rules or day-to-day stuff. In person, I'm a forever GM. Online, I've managed to get some playing in. But even though I'm really enjoying the online Traveller game I've been playing in for the last year, online gaming doesn't do it for me like in-person does. For my in person games, I can't seem to get anything ongoing going on. Just one-shots. One-shots are fine, but I'd really like to do something longer. But I can't even get four people who can make the same time twice in a month. Hell, this past week, I was ready to run a game for only two people, and only one managed to make it.

I'm a forever GM now (I've been playing/DM'ing a long time - started with old school AD&D and red/blue box back in the day). I used to be able to play in another friend's game, but he never runs games anymore (he doesn't play either). I've burned out on the past two game systems (Dungeon World and Pathfinder 2e for different reasons) and now I'm about to inform (yes, inform) the group we're switching systems again as I'm looking for something in-between (rules medium?) - I will give them some options and let them vote. I hit my burnout threshold after a year and a half (almost exactly) both times. My players are geographically dispersed so this is all VTT play. Jeff and stream chat, I really appreciate the advice and compassion in the video - I've definitely felt unappreciated at times and it helps to hear it from "brothers in arms" that I'm not alone. I've been subtly suggesting that someone else give GM'ing a try but they always defer to my experience. I'm also pushing for a genre change to mix things up a bit.

48.12 reminds me of a shopping trip I had with the family one time :p

Looks to me like this edition is a big step back from 5th in terms of graphic design and artwork. I'm really surprised just how bad some of the art shown here is, and that cover is one of my least favorites in the entire series. Really bums me out. Are all the new rules in the starter set? Maybe it makes more sense to grab that just as a rules supplement for 5.2 and skip this one?

The starter set is just that, designed to get someone started; no character creation rules, only details on rules which are accessed during the adventure, minimal background, etc. As I mentioned in the review, I'm not well versed enough in Pengragon 5.2 to tell you every little change but I don't believe a huge amount has been revamped. ~ Jeff

@@Thegaminggang yeah. I'm just wondering if the Starter Set actually contains all the new rules (outside of character creation). Or if it's missing a bunch hidden throughout chapters of the Core Rulebook.

People’s taste vary. I really love this art direction.

My first exposure to Pendragon was when I picked up the 6th ed starter set last year and I absolutely fell in love with it. Unable to wait for the release of 6th ed I ordered 5.2 off DriveThru along with the Great Pendragon Campaign and some of the other supplements that have been done. Not sure how much value they really brought. At this point I'm just not sure if I'll bother picking up the 6th ed books as I don't think there's enough difference between it and 5.2 to warrant it. I'm very happy with 5.2.

Flippin' Kickstarters - be still my beating… wallet! C&C Reforged (yup, Jeff, you got me convinced - lol - 'cause it definitely wasn't that video), the brilliant 2LMice and Mushmen, Planet of the Apes(!), and fortunately the Savage Pathfinder is a 'Booster' rather than a big box. Budget got buggered for June. - - - - Cheers for the chat. Seems to me, the avoiding burnout tips should just be how we normally operate, we just forget to look after ourselves or each other.
