I Rebuilt a Fire Pit in 90 Minutes and Made $,$$$
Today we fix this fire pit feature that was completely falling apart. We start by taking off the caps and cleaning off the adhesive, removing the first course of block, and then leveling the bottom course block-by-block. We can then replace the course of block that we removed and re-adhere the caps.

Today we talk about 2 reasons why there are white spots on your pavers. One is because of efflorescence. It usually works its way out of the concrete when there is a properly constructed base that drains, but in severe cases it may need to be cleaned. The other reason why there are whi...

Very well explained. Thanks. Is there any way to keep pavers from shifting due to a pool safety cover?
Thank you! Is it an auto cover or the covers with the anchors through the patio?
Bro, check out BOLD's Cobra Connector. Way easier than the easy lock.
Yeah this is an old video when BOLD was Inlite North America
Hey I am A Hardscaper. I am doing an open grade patio and had a serious general question. I understand how/why the plastic edge works better with sand and dense bases, but couldn't a longer non galvanized spike like a 20 inch or something be utilized so it comes in contact with the sub base (soil)? Generally curious. Was thinking of using something like the 2 ft rebars that Home Depot sells. Love the page. Learned a lot from ya
Thank you! You want the corrosion where the spikes then hold onto the fines of a dense graded base to be at the level of the edge restraint. That way when the spikes do try to heave they are heaving the entire edge restraint. That’s the idea behind plastic edge. If you use open graded and rely on that corrosion to be from the sub grade then you still have a lot of room for that spike to heave. Hope that makes sense
Thanks this video is very helpful. Just made my job much better.
Glad it helped!
Didn't sweep polymeric sand in the joint around the bottom course??
Good eye! Next video. We did a complete cleaning, pressure washing, and re-install polymeric sand on the patio
A metal ring in the channel may work well to keep the blocks right no?
Yeah, but they need access to under the fire pit. One of the blocks is cut and comes out of the face so they can turn on and off the fire.
Big difference between before and after. If they hired you 10 years ago, they wouldn’t be dealing with this today lol
Haha thank you!
Thank you.

Hey man! E.G. Landscape Construction here from Ottawa. Love your videos, great work 💯 Check out the Husqvarna K770 dry-cut saw. It has a dust collection system. Different than the Sthil, bit of a learning curve. But you'll get rid of 95% of that dust. I dont use my Sthil saws no more. Look forward to seeing it in future videos! Cheers 🍻
Hey thanks for the suggestion! Is it built into the saw or an attachment?
I’ve got my sub base ready to go for 1” of chip bedding and gatorbase panels but I’ve got a question about my sub base prep. Does the sub base have to be perfect or is there some tolerance in it. I think it looks pretty good but I’m a rank beginner and I don’t know. Thanks for the advice. Excellent videos
yup +/- 3/8" over a 10' area
Awesome! Thanks! And thanks for such a quick reply! Take care.
I am a homeowner pretty handy Electrician by trade, but my pavers were installed with poly sand and now I have to power wash and reinstall poly sand or an alternative. can I use just a plain sand or dose it have to be a special sand. If I do use the poly sand do I have to remove all the old poly sand from the joint?
You could use jointing sand. It is a little different than other sands in that the grains are more angular. You need at least 1 to 1.5" of depth to install new sand, but check with the manufacturer because it does differ. And it is best to do all of the project if it needs to be replaced or work in large areas rather than small patches here and there. This may help: czcams.com/video/PMu1l2ure4M/video.html
How much did you charge for this job? What was the total costs and how much profit did you make?
Sorry I don’t publicly share what my clients spend
I have a project im looking at, I have alarge patio im wanting to do in pavers. It is now just an ugly concrete slab, what would my base be for that?
in Tampa. so rain is a consideration, a few low spots but not bad, most water runs off, just a few small areas that retain.
I’d watch this video. It provides a few different options and applications. But being in Tampa you likely only have access to dense graded base. Best Base for Pavers | 4 Base Preparation Methods with Different Applications czcams.com/video/Zn8eODTY-QI/video.html
@@iamahardscaper thanks for the quick reply, and the link! Ill watch it now. More questions later :)
bring them on 👍
very informative. And yea id rather do a re-application every 5 years vs a complete reno of base and lay them again. Can i powewash concrete pavers?
Yup 👍
This video is extremely helpful, you only really need to watch this one. I did a huge project a while ago using this video as a guide and I’m doing another one so I’m watching the video again as a refresher course Thank you so much for making this!
Thanks so much!
Where can i get the paver crushed stone like yours instead of sand? I can’t find it in Home Depot
Search for a landscape supplier near you. Where are you located? It is difficult to find it in the south and western states
Open graded aggregate looks simply to be dry screened stone.
or washed stone 🤔
Hey buddy.quick question.do u tamp your pavers at the very end?
I tamp them after sweeping in the polymeric sand with a protective pad or using a roller tamper
Where do hardscapers buy the paver sealer? Nobody has it in stock. I don't really want to order it online, but the big box stores don't stock it. I can't believe that professional hardscapers order it online. Thanks
Nobody buys hardscape products from big box stores. Just search for a landscape supplier near you. They will stock pavers, aggregates, sealers, anything you need.
@@iamahardscaper Thanks. I called the supplier I bought my pavers from and he said he THINKS he has a 5 gallon bucket of sealer for $850. I assumed after that information that the professional hardscapers would never be buying it from them.
It has been a while since I bought sealer, but that seems expensive. Go to the Techni Seal or Alliance website and find a dealer near you.
@@iamahardscaper Now I'm wondering how many hardscapers go back to a job to seal it... I'm thinking they don't. Thanks for your help.
most hardscapers stay away from it and it is a different company entirely that will do it. Kind of like asphalt companies that don't recoat the driveway. It is difficult to invest a whole lot of money into equipment and then go out and do a bunch of sealing jobs that do not require that equipment and still make enough money to pay for that equipment. Not to mention you need perfect weather for sealing so you may be on a job and have to pull off of it just to go seal a project where you wont be making near the same amount of money.
Great video! Looking to redo the pavers around our pool which were layed on top of concrete. Is the open graded base recommended for my situation where we would be putting it on top of concrete?
It just depends on the height that you have available. Are you tearing out the concrete or laying directly on the concrete?
How would you raise the slope? Just add more gravel to that area than the rest?
No, the base prep should be consistent. I can’t quite follow trying to raise the slope.
We currently have old outdoor carpet glued on our front porch. Debating various options if we remove the carpet. Obviously if we want to show the natural concrete, we will need to grind down the carpet to remove the adhesive. If we went the route you took, would that step even be necessary? It would seem the fabric and sand would provider a barrier to any adhesive on the concrete. Also, curious where you purchased your materials from? Do you have a material list? Thanks!
You still need to adhere your caps, so I would just remove the carpet personally. You should have a landscape supplier near you. Don't go to a big box store. These materials are natural stone caps and Techo-Bloc Blu 45 for the interior.
Can I place a 6 man hot tub on pavers if I have 1” of screeding and 6” of 3/4 gravel underneath?
No it should be placed on a poured concrete pad
@@iamahardscaper Thanks for the quick response! I appreciate it.
This is very interesting and informative as well. Winters go below -40c in my area, and 1/4 to 3/4 down limestone are widely used for paving base. I’m currently working on a project to extend the width of a driveway on a very well sloped surrounding grade, what kind of base should I use to prevent the base being washed away along the surrounding grade.
Whenever I do a project that butts up to another base, I usually just match the base material. More than likely the base for your driveway is dense graded, so I would just match it with more dense graded material and not open.
.003 ? Really?
👍
Looks great. Going to be starting a diy raised patio soon. Would you recommend woven or non woven fabric for a clay soil? Thanks
You could use either, just make sure to incorporate it throughout the entire project and not up the back of the wall portion of your raised patio. Regardless, I would also use geogrid in your patio base
Thanks!
Great video, super informative, but when are you going to stop pretending to be a hardscaper and admit you are a drainage contractor
😂😂 I’ve stopped my pursuit of taking on drainage jobs. Turns out I hate them.
What is the hight that you allow for compaction
Less than 1/8" per 1" of HPB. For sand a little more than 1/8" per 1"
@@iamahardscaper So if you have 12” HPB, 11” 20mm clear and 1” 10mm clear compacted. It will still compact 1/4 of the inch. Hard to believe but you have more experience than I do.
Sorry, not following that lineup of aggregate. 12", then 11", then 1"? Also, you don't compact your bedding layer, you want that to be loose. You then compact the pavers into the bedding layer with the jointing compound. That's where you get 1/8" when using HPB as your screed layer. Not 1/4.
@@iamahardscaper 12” was total hight of bedding layer, 11” of 20mm and 1” of 10mm as a screed layer It makes sense to me to compact first 11” of bedding layer than put 1” screed layer pavers and than compacted with jointing compound. But idk you are professional. I take your word for it.
Gotchya. So where you say bedding layer, that is actually the base. Bedding layer is interchangeable to screed layer. HPB is the screed layer. So for your 1” of HPB screed layer, I would set your pavers a little less than 1/8” higher than the final grade. It is not much, but that is approximately how much it will go down.
Looks beautiful, I love how the border splits. Pro!
Thank you!
This is really great information, thank you!! I'm getting ready to DIY a rectangular patio. You mention 1/8" - 1/4" slope per foot. I've heard a minimum of 1/4" per foot (~2% gradient). Are there different considerations for different climates or soil types or precipitation levels? What do you usually recommend?
I would never go more than 1/4". But here is the video with all your questions answered: czcams.com/video/LiUvAfS94Lk/video.html
Received a quote for hardscaping patio in my backyard, I am now a hardscaper.
Welcome!
Good video, but shouldn't you use a blower to make sure no sand is left on the pavers after the sweeping is completed? The sand will harden on top of the pavers if left behind. Thanx
Yup! Maybe it wasn't captured in this video (it is an older video) but we definitely always do that before activating with water.
I just power washed my pavers that where full moss and mold. I don't think the polymer was installed correctly. Should I just use sand or polymer at this point?
that is up to you. If you install polymeric sand, here is an instructional video: czcams.com/video/vUwQ_9e0SMo/video.html
How did you pitch the patio still? Or did you just make it level?
the raised patio? There are several ways to do it. Crown it, add a drain in the middle and slope it all towards the drain, level it and install a semi-permeable jointing compound. It depends on how large it is. This one in the video I crowned it and still installed a semi-permeable jointing compound.
Why don't a lot of hardware stores sell geotextile fabric?
Big box stores just don’t cater to hardscapers.
Great video! Very informative and detailed. I’m just about done excavating for my patio project. Thanks for the great tips. You and The Christian Hardscaper are my favorite paver channels.
Hey thanks a lot!
I have 10 years pavement. It looks like there is is less sand in the joints. What is the correct procedure to repair/resand the joints?
any areas you want, you need to scrape out the joints / pressure wash to get to 1 - 1.5 inches in depth and follow the instructions of installing polymeric sand. larger areas work better rather than small areas throughout.
This video addressed all my moss problems and moss questions. Simply excellent. Thank you.
Glad it helps!

Really useful instructive video; many thanks indeed.
Thank you!
Hi there! Thanks for the helpful video. Quick questions… 1). Could you use hpb for the entire screening base right down to the sub soil? 8-10” 2) if so, would you compact the hpb before laying the pavers? 3). How do you compact on top of the pavers once laid without risking breaking the pavers? Working with 1.25” granite slabs 2x3 ft Thanks
1) I wouldn’t. It is only meant to be a screed layer. But I know guys that do for pedestrian traffic projects. 2) I wouldn’t do it. 3) I would definitely use a paver roller for slabs that size. Other compactors will definitely crack those slabs. Paver Roller Compactor Review czcams.com/video/CK1VFL--z9k/video.html
Thanks so much I appreciate the quick reply! Any idea where I might rent a ‘paver roller compactor’ in Toronto? In exploring online I’m only finding the plate compactors
Ohh that’s a great question. I would call local rental companies or reach out directly to MQuip. They might rent. You can also contact Weber and Bartell Global and see if they have rental shops nearby for their rollers
Wow, I learned a lot. Thanks,
Glad it helps!
What would you choose: 1/4 clean crushed rock or 3/8 clean crushed rock? These are the options available where I live. I'm planning on using a synthetic base for our backyard pavers under our deck cover
Either one works. Probably the 1/4
I wanna know to lol😂
👍
At the beginning of the video, you layout how the wall comes together. For the 6 to 8 inch base material, you were using 3/4” WITH fines. Would it be OK to use 3/4” clear, WITHOUT fines, as this would allow water to pass through easily, especially on clay soil.? Great videos!
Absolutely, here is a video we made on when to use either: BEST Base Material for a Retaining Wall | Dense or Open Graded Base czcams.com/video/BFb8lZ_mGYs/video.html
