Coric - Contessa 32
United Kingdom
Registrace 2. 10. 2011
Having captured the restoration of Coric (Ep 1- 38, in playlist 1), we are shifting this channel to be more about sailing Coric - the techniques we use (Ep 39 onwards, playlist 2).
It is very much our aim that either or both of us can jump on the boat and take it from one place to another without needing to worry too much. This is a going to be a record of how we sail together. It will also be we would like to think A good and useful reference for anybody about to set out either in their own boat or someone else’s guest. We are going to try to talk through not just what happens but why it happens that way
Ep 67 onwards is about our trip to explore the west coast of Scotland.
Please like subscribe and comment especially with ideas of what you would like to see to help you in your sailing. Thank you for watching.

Yacht Skippering Skills
If you want to improve your Yacht Skippering Skills in a one-to-one environment, do get in touch (john@coric.uk). Offering a fully coded boat, and a RYA YachMaster Ocean (Instructor) along with the variety of the Solent and straightforward reach to Normandy this is ideal for building skills and confidence.
This is very much a bespoke activity, designed around what you need and want. Start and stop times, and all that sort of thing you are very much in your gift. All of this is up for grabs.
Firstly, we will agree and schedule dates. We know that sailing in no wind or too much wind makes for a less than great experience. To that end we will look at the weather and tides a week ahead and agree an outline plan. At that point we should agree the scope, timings and take a deposit.
By and large the boat is based in Portsmouth - we can pick you up from Gunwharf, Gosport Haslar or Clarence Marinas.
Regarding and start and stop time we can start at either 1800 or 1000 the day after depending on whether we need night sailing experience and normal finish would be 1600 back in Portsmouth
The boat will be fully catered for the activity. We will supply lifejackets and all safety gear. The expectation is that you will have your own foul weather gear and footwear. For overnight stays please have a pillow and sleeping bag. I can supply a more detailed suggested kit list if required.
Turning to costs, in big handfuls you are getting boat and skipper for either a day or an overnight activity. The emphasis will be to focus on one-to-one instruction, but we absolutely understand that you may wish to sail with someone else and therefore we can cheerfully accommodate two people if you wish. This is included in the cost.
An activity that runs from early morning to late afternoon will cost £420, and activity that takes place overnight will be £600. These are all inclusive costs for the boat, skippering and tuition. Anything beyond a couple of days we will treat on a case-by-case basis.
Ideally this makes sense - happy to discuss further.

Great demo thanks
nice work -thank you for posting
Lots of phaff for the third reef, which if needed will be in inclement conditions, and therefore the most important.
Two good demos, Thanks. SV Skoiern IV
Loving the videos both. Really helpful. It would be great if you could make a video on how to anchor
Ablutions? Are you a 14th century monk?
We have AIS MOB units installed in our life jackets, programmed to the boats plotter they give person’s position plus also send a DSC MOB signal to all ships and stations. Very good kit and widely available. We also recover either the lifer rinds designed for this and can be used to haul out. We deploy an inflatable dan-buoy as soon as a MOB has been called.
sorry, but the presentation is confusing
Your doing the right thing with line through the hook and back...I've watched the Crinan idea with a loop round the hook....Terrible idea! ...If the lock fails and empty's, Your boat can be left hanging..(As a Veteran of the Caladonian Canal)..I can assure you it not only happens..But it will Happen!
Good to see you at the weekend . I have only just seen this video and had no idea you were offering tuition until Elizabeth mentioned it., which is a shame as I’d had literally just booked a skipper for three days tuition on Tantris ! Always more to learn and room for improvement so I will keep you in mind . Enjoy the D Day celebrations .
It was great to see you guys as well. Wasn’t it a terrific weekend?
Beautiful! Well done!👏👏
May i ask your length please ? Im 1:80 cm and want to know if i can stand properly in the living room
I am 1:70 so it might a little tricky. Let me measure next time I am onboard
I would just have a 2nd and 3rd reef. But I like boring sailing.
Horses for Course :-)
Hi again. How’s the single line reefing going on the selden boom with the internal stuff removed? Would you still recommend it? Still easy and low friction?
I would say so, we are a little more measured when putting in reefs and alway try to do it such that we we can see the block that will be the new tack - when out of sight they have been known to twist which increases friction but otherwise all good.
Super video. I have transeted the Crinan 15 times, and no one ever mentioned where to get fuel!
Thank you, we had a lovely transit. Maybe wish we had gone a bit slower (ie visited Lochgilphead etc)
Coric is immaculate, lived in showroom condition
Thank you - that’s very kind
very beatiful boat!
Thank you
Positively palatial! I sailed a Contessa 26 for many years when I was much younger. I always wanted a 32 but families ect. I graduated to French mass produced volumn boats. Now 72, I have fonder memories of my little 26 than any other boat that I have had. Just found your channel, subscibed and liked. 👍
Thank you very much for this - contessa 26 is a lovely looking boat
I grew up sailing in that area with my dad. In later life a passed through the canal many times in my Contessa. Sadly not a 32 but a 26. Now in my seventies and several boats later I still have fonder memories of my little Contessa that any other boat I have owned. I now mosetly day sail and am considering down sizing to another 26 to potter the coast of Argyllshire.
Sounds like a lovely plan
She looks great! What's the standing headroom may I ask?
In the centre of the saloon about 5’ 10” but much less in heads (and much much more in the cockpit) :-). Thanks for your kind words.
Much more in the cockpit, love it, they are way too small for me, but thanks... @@CoricContessa32
She looks great! What's the standing headroom in her may I ask?
About 5’ 8” in the saloon, much less in the heads, much more in the cockpit. :-)
They really are perfect little yachts those contessas. Would love to own one myself. Maybe one day when I’m retired!
We agree. Avoid waiting if you can :-)
Congrats! Thank you for sharing! Looks amazing!
Thank you, that’s very kind
I think one might struggle putting in the third reef when you really need it. It does make sense though to not have it set up for everyday use. I think it is safer not to pull the excess second reef line through though as if one forgets one can foul the sail as you raise it again.
Agreed but the counter risk is a loop of line that gets caught up. No easy answer I think
Very helpful cheers
Glad it helped
one safety point in the "rig test", do it with the mainsheet tighter, and the mainsheet car out that side, so this has the "force of the boom" if anything where to go aloof, the main can only swing as much as there is mainsheet slack, stopping a "Chinese Gybe" from harming the crew. this also heels the boat less, as the point of pull of the mainsheet is further to the leeward side, so less mechanical advantage on the keel, less heel, and a safer deck, the rudder is also in the water deeper, so is more effective, so less chance of losing control of boat position (the main reason for a "Chinese Gybe" initiating, also if in high winds, REEF the lot, the less force on the rig, the slower the boom is likely to move, and also you have more control of it with the mainsheet tackle, as the lower the sail is the calmer the wind the sail feels.
what!, the first sentence doesn't make any sense, " you are very very broad reaching, then going to lunch", yuck, as the term "reaching" means the actions in ones' stomach when one is being sick, or vomiting.
Think you are thinking of retching. Reaching is a point of sail.
A little late to the discussion, but how is the Dyneema penant attached to the boom? Do you have a photo? Thanks
There is a boom bale just forward of the main sheet attachment to the end of the boom and the feeding pennant is looped onto that.
Less is more...life lesson learned. Thanks for this!
We still haven’t completely unpacked having got back home
Merry Christmas and Godspeed to both of you John and Elizabeth and Coric. Thanks for friendly and very informative videos and experiences.
Thank you - that’s very kind
Thanks for the helpful video... should save me some headache and heartbreak
Delighted it was iseful
“Useful”
I'm bit late to watch your last video but I'm pretty busy learning to play golf ! I realize that I should not put all my money in clubs, green fees, lessons with a pro and tokens for the practice range but rather allow 10% for beer and fish and chips 🤣 Don't know yet if it will improve my handicap/index but it's worth trying ! Thank's for sharing your nice trip.

Hi. Here is my optimization tip: If you want to save space, cut up plastic and cardboard packaging into small pieces (5x5 cm or less). Also, store every type of garbage collection from 2-3 days in a plastic bag. Put these smaller bags in an additional bigger bag for protection to be stored outside (anchor locker, lazarette, etc.) until you can disposed of. By doing so, even with 5 people on board we could go on for 1-2 weeks without disposal on land. Good luck!
Thanks - we never had to go that long but sounds like a good tip
Thanks for sharing your adventure John and Elizabeth. We’ve really enjoyed all the videos and following you on your trip. You’ve inspired us to do something similar next year.
Thanks for this Robin, ideally be able to update you face-to-face over the next few months. Can highly recommend
Thoroughly enjoyed following your adventures. Thank you. Makes me all the more determined to get more than the 5 weeks total aboard our Contessa that we managed this season.
Thank you for your kind words. I can honestly say that being away for a long time makes this a little bit easier.
A proper adventure, brilliant that you've shared so much of it. Seems like the boat and all the nav gear performed well, no doubt you'll soon be planning more. Great advert for this corner of the world, enjoy being home.
Thank you very much, Brian, much appreciated. boat worked very much as we wanted. Good to be home.
Have watched whole journey what a great adventure, many thanks for sharing you are both so genuine and I have learnt a lot along the way ⛵️
That’s very kind thank you. It was sometimes a little bit of an effort to make the videos but I’m glad I’ve got them as a reminder of the various ups and downs of the trip
Great trip in a great boat.😎👍⛵⛵⛵⛵
Completely agree
Could I add my thanks to you both for this wonderful series of videos so that we could follow and learn from your experiences.
Thank you, Simon , that’s very kind
Congrats on the successful adventure. If I’m not mistaken from the refit videos, you have 3 sealed lead acid batteries, 1 starter and 2 domestic - did you find this & your charging methods (assuming alternator, shore power & small solar panel) adequate?
Yes thank you very much and your kind words. You are right about the batteries and the electrical provision. Everything worked pretty well although the solar panel output dropped a little. Not sure if it’s the panel all the wires and need to do a little bit of investigating. We only had to run the engine to charge the batteries very occasionally. For example, if we had been at anchor for two or three days with not much sunshine
Great hot wash - love that you made a pie chart! Looking forward to your next video!
Thanks very much for this. A friend of mine hates pie chart so I thought I would include one.
That's the best reason for including it! @@CoricContessa32
Very interesting and useful, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
great adventure, well done 😊
It was a lot of fun. Thanks
I have thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful record of your sailing adventure. When I say "I" that's not strictly speaking correct as my landlubber better half has been hooked as well!! We love how you explain things in detail and share your 'learns'. It's not only entertaining but very informative and interesting. Thank you so much for taking the time and making the effort to share with us. Best wishes...
Thank you very much, and I am glad that it was interesting to not just the sailors
I love the way that you spent almost 10% on🍺! Fantastic!
Erm, that was a little bit of a surprise
that was great seeing olli
Thanks Charlie
What a wonderful experience and an absolute joy to follow. From refit to realisation of a dream. An absolute credit to you both. Have a comforting rest with family and friends this winter and I look forward to hearing about your new adventures. Stephen.
Thanks very much Stephen. Much appreciated. Looking forward to planning the next adventure in front a roaring fire.
Thank you loved all your videos.
