8va Vocal Ensemble
Registrace 20. 02. 2023
The 8va Vocal Ensemble is composed of select alumni from different batches of the Octava Choral Society, which was originally named 8va when ethnomusicologist, musical director, and choral conductor, Prof. Francisco Englis founded it in 1978.
Upon his retirement from MSU-IIT, Prof. Englis decided to revive the 8va in its original form in 2018, with a membership open to anyone from all walks of life who shares the same love and passion for choral music. Now known as The 8va Vocal Ensemble, the group started with only six members, and was reintroduced in a performance at the Deus Caritas Village Youth Rondalla benefit concert in Iligan in January 2018.
The group has since doubled its roster, all of whom are professionals in a variety of fields. Since its revival, The 8va Vocal Ensemble has been building and performing a repertoire that includes folk songs, sacred music, popular local and international songs, Broadway showstoppers, and Mindanaoan ethnic pieces.

This version was arranged for the choir by one of the pioneer members of the MSU-IIT 8va Choral Society, Mr. Edwin Edpalina. The 8va Choral Society was a University-based choir in Iligan City, composed of students, teachers and staff from MSU-IIT and was formed in 1978 under the artistic direction of Prof. Francisco A. Banlay Paak Biyaaw From the Collection of folk songs by Ms. Priscilla Magdamo Banlay Paak Biyaaw is a traditional children’s game among the members of the Manobo tribe in Mindanao. The song imitates the movement of the vine, swaying from side to side, bending but never breaking no matter how strong the wind gets. Much the Filipinos’ resilience and perseverance.
