David Sanborn - This Masquerade (Elektra Records 1995)
"This Masquerade" is a song written by American singer and musician Leon Russell. It was originally recorded in 1972 by Russell for his album Carney and as a B-side for the album's hit single "Tight Rope". The song was then covered on Helen Reddy's 1972 album, I Am Woman. It was then recorded by American vocal duo, the Carpenters, for their 1973 album Now & Then and as the B-side of the Carpenters's single "Please Mr. Postman". Three years later, "This Masquerade" was recorded by American singer and guitarist George Benson, who released it on his 1976 album, Breezin'. Benson's version, featuring Jorge Dalto on piano, was released as a single and became the first big hit of his career.
David William Sanborn (July 30, 1945 - May 12, 2024) was an American alto saxophonist. Though Sanborn worked in many genres, his solo recordings typically blended jazz with instrumental pop and R&B. He released his first solo album Taking Off in 1975, but had been playing the saxophone since before he was in high school and was a session musician long before its release. He was active as a session musician, playing on several albums by various artists.
One of the most commercially successful American saxophonists to earn prominence since the 1980s, Sanborn was described by critic Scott Yanow as "the most influential saxophonist on pop, R&B, and crossover players of the past 20 years." He was often identified with radio-friendly smooth jazz, but expressed a disinclination for the genre and his association with it.
Sanborn died of complications from prostate cancer in Tarrytown, New York, on May 12, 2024, at the age of 78. He had been diagnosed with the disease in 2018.
He has won six Grammy Awards and has had eight gold albums and one platinum album. Sanborn won Grammy Awards for Voyeur (1981), Double Vision (1986), and the instrumental album Close Up (1988). In 2004, Sanborn was inducted into the St. Louis Walk of Fame.
Are we really happy here
With this lonely game we play
Looking for words to say
Searching but not finding understanding anywhere
We're lost in a masquerade
Both afraid to say we're just too far away
From being close together from the start
We tried to talk it over but the words got in the way
We're lost inside this lonely game we play
Thoughts of leaving disappear
Every time I see your eyes
No matter how hard I try
To understand the reasons that we carry on this way
We're lost in a masquerade
Both afraid to say we're just too far away
From being close together from the start
We tried to talk it over but the words got in the way
We're lost inside this lonely game we play
Thoughts of weeping disappear
Every time I see your face
No matter how hard I try
To understand the reasons
Why we carry on this way
We're lost in a masquerade

SOOOOOO TRUE .............EVERYTHING HE SAID
Louis Armstrong and Nat King Cole were both Free Masons
I see skies of blue and clouds of white. The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night. And i think to myself what a wonderful world. The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky. Are also on the faces of people going by. I see friends shaking hands saying how do you do. They're really saying i love you. I hear babies crying, I watch them grow. They'll learn much more, than I'll never Know. And i think to myself what a wonderful world. Yes I think to myself what a wonderful world. Here is the lyrics by Louis Armstrong RIP Legend
Am I the only one who thinks this sounds like Amy Winehouse just with less raspiness? Beautiful ❤

😊
As she mentioned in the beginning, she felt very nervous, probably because of the live TV recording, which was still a relatively new thing in those days, and I suspect she didn't really have cold, or only maybe feared that she might be about to get one, and that her mentioning of having a cold was only sort of a psychological ploy, a reassurance, in case the TV recording didn't turn out so well, that she would have a natural explanation for it, and this reassuring feeling then gave her the strength to completely overcome her nervousness and deliver a flawless performance.
one of the most perfect incredible performances in all of history. You are dearly missed Sarah Vaughan
