From Burned to Beautiful: Shou Sugi Ban Outdoor Furniture
In this video I show you how to recreate the DIY Creators modern chair design in a Shou Sugi Ban fashion. This Shou Sugi Ban technique is also known as Yakisugi. I was looking for a good outdoor chair design (to buy) and couldn't really find anything I liked. I did find DIY Creators video and decided to make my own version of that chair. I'm thrilled with the way this outdoor furniture turned out. Shou Sugi Ban is one of my favorite techniques and it's how I like to preserve wood from the elements. Thanks again to DIY Creators on this one...I hope I do you proud with my rendition of your outdoor chair build.

How to Get Finex Cast Iron Quality From A Lowly Lodge Griddle!
I just picked up some 4x4 doug fir lumber. Very nice and recently milled. I assume it's pretty green, but haven't checked with meter. I'm curious about doing a partially outdoor pergola project with them now, and wondering if Shou Sugi Ban would be fine to do now while green, or should wait until more dry? Any thoughts appreciated!
Hi there. That's a good question. I would imagine that if the wood is drier, that it would be advantageous. That said, I don't really know. Maybe I would split the difference and let it dry out a bit more, but not so long that you never wind up doing the pergola. Are you going to document the burn and build? Would love to see what the end result looks like.
He looks like Dax Sheppard! Thanks for the info!!
I'll take that as a huge compliment. He's a good looking dude...and 7 years younger than I am :)
Just two questions: 1. You burn the toilet paper with the humanure as well? 2. Can you use a squeeze bottle bidet with the system, or is there another recepticle for that? Thanks in advance for your reply.
1. Yes...it all burns (or evaporates) including urine. 2. Squeeze bottle bidet may add too much moisture to the system (w/urine). I would be a bit nervous about doing that. Will impact the overall efficiency of the system. I'm not sure how much moisture you would be introducing via the bottle.
@@TinyIndustrial About half a cup or 120ml if you're metric.
Thanks for the video, and yes, I purchased your book as well. I liked the gypsy wagons and vardos before they were the "in thing." Just refinished my jayco, and maybe it's time for this project! You did fine on the video, and it's hard to do while you're actually doing the work and shooting footage simultaneously. Thanks again and blessings.
Thanks so much for your comment. I appreciate the kind words. Yes, sometimes when you are doing stuff, you don't really want to be filming and explaining stuff at the same time. You are very right about that.
will any of these methods work on treated lumber?
As in pressure treated lumber? no... don't do it. That would is already preserved with icky and unnatural chemicals (which you don't want to heat up).
does that mean that we can use untreated wood with this method to build durable houses?
This method is an alternative to pressure treated wood. It may not last as long as pressure treated but 1) it looks better 2) it's better for the environment. Really comes down to implementation, where you are and what the exposure is to the elements.
So do u wash out the buckets ? Or is there a garbage bag in there?
For a composting toilet? There are people who do it both ways. Some just clean the bucket and some use a liner (bag) and then discard of the bag at a later point.
Do you need to privide seperate combustion air? I am putting it in a small room with no windows or existing ventilation to the outside. Thanks!
No air supply need. Unless you are in an airtight room, the unit will get sufficient airflow for what it's doing.
Think you could say the word "trailer" a few more times? We haven't heard that enough yet.
Trailer, trailer, trailer. Hey, it's built on a trailer. Worth mentioning more than once.
First time I saw anything about the incineration option was when I saw a video about a couple living in a converted box truck. So this is actually my second video about that.
How did it work out for the couple in the box truck. Did they like it? What are your thoughts on it?
@@TinyIndustrial It worked great. I save a lot of videos like this, so I would have to see if I can find it. As that was my first video on that I was so surprised. I think it used propane. AND they had some sort of micro mini washing machine for clothes. I never saw anything like it. It was wall mounted I believe.
Great tips❤
Thanks! I appreciate the comment.
Have you used the watco exterior oil?
I don't believe so. Have you had good experience with it or are you looking for a review of how it works?
Does this make the tiny house hot in the summer?
Not at all. It draws all the warm/combustion air out via the vent to the outside.
Looks great
Thanks! Yes, these are fun to build. Are you thinking of building one?
@TinyIndustrial thinking of building one they look great
Made it look easy well played!!
Thank you! It actually is pretty easy... :)
The "Lavio" would be much safer -- it wraps everything up into a neat little pavkage for easy and sanitary disposal.
Yes, that's a popular one for sure. Definitely the winner in the 'ease of use' category. Lots of people complain about the cost of the cartridges though.
@@TinyIndustrial Right you are. The Lavio is expensive to use.
Why would you want it cooked?
Not cooked...incinerated. Ashes to ashes...dust to dust.
Well, your buns will never get cold.
Doesn't really give off any heat. You would never really know it's an incinerating toilet unless someone told you. You would simply think that it's a different kind of toilet if you were seeing one for the first time.
Separating urine from the poops is very bad because only carbon matter avoid urine to transform in ammoniac or nitrite or nitrate which are bad for the environment. So buy only toilets that compost both at the same time. When urine is not immediately mix with carbon matter then nitrogen, contained in the urine, will bond with the hydrogen of water to form ammoniac or will bond with the oxygen to form nitrates, two toxic components. When you mix the urine with high carbon matter the bacteria and fungi in the mixture use the nitrogen in urine to synthesize the proteins and amino acids they need to grow. These organic nitrogen compounds are formed when nitrogen (in the form of ammonium or urea) reacts with the carbon compounds in the sawdust. Ex: amino acids (such as glycine, alanine, etc.) and proteins.
That sounds like a very scientific explanation why you wouldn't want to have a urine diverter. Thanks for the comment.
About the composting toilet. The secret to get no bad odors is the type and quantity of matter you use to absorb and cover your urine and poops. The matter must be high in carbon and highly absorbant. So the best matter is saw dust. Start by putting a think layer at the bottom of the contain and do not afraid to cover your excrement with a think layer of saw dust. You can also slightly turn the contain once a while to not pee always at the same place.
That's good advice. I assume that you use one of these? ...or did you simply research this topic a great deal?
@TinyIndustrial help me, please, how I can check if 3 ceiling lights doesnt turn on? The rest of them are ok
Hi. I think that I had reached out to you directly via email, right? Did you get the issue remedied?
Interesting but to much power needed. Going to look for a better solution.
Yeah, it's not for everybody. Thanks for checking out the video. What are you going to go with?
I understand everything perfectly except for one part. at 1:46:40, why do you run that 2x3 to attach the wall framing? wouldn't it be more structurally sound to mount the wall framing directly to the big 2x12 below? Thanks so much! I'm going to build my own trailer and then build one of these houses on top at my new home here in Guatemala!
That's a great question. I'm not entirely sure why I did it that way. You can certainly do it the way you propose and have it be find. I think that the main purpose is that with the 2x3 at the bottom of the wall, you have 1) a wider area to attach the exterior/outer wall to. and 2) perhaps more importantly, when you go to attach the interior wall, you have a better contiguous span to attach the bottom of the interior wall to as well. Without it you would just be bridging the empty space between the upright 2x3's. Make sense? Really good question though...but those are the main reasons for it. You can see what I'm talking about at 03:22:20. Imaging if that 2x3 wasn't at the bottom of that interior wall...much harder to attach interior wall material that way if it wasn't there.
Hi, thanks for the video. I want to build a very similar system, but I'm concerned about draining the system into the vent pipe. How is the tank getting air when water is flowing out through the same pipe? Thanks
Not sure I follow your question. The vent pipe is there to let air in and out of the tank when either filling or draining the tank. It's so that the tank can breathe. Without that vent there would be a vacuum in the tank and it would contract or expand. The concept is similar in a car fuel tank. As you fill your cars gas tank the air that gets displaced needs to exit the tank. If there were no vent on your fuel tank, you wouldn't be able to fill it up either. Make sense?
@@TinyIndustrial Thanks, but I understand what the vent tube is; you didn't get the question. However, I already have a solution. At 23:00, you mentioned connecting the drainage tube to the vent tube. So, I asked how the air will get in while water is flowing out through the same tube. But now I see that you can open the valve on the inlet tube, which will allow it to function as a vent tube. However, I think a better solution would be to connect the drain tube to the inlet tube. I will place a valve outside of the inlet tube as well. When I open it, I will have access to water from the tank, not just for drainage, but for everyday use-only in summer, of course.
Top quality video, really couldn't be better. thanks a bunch!
Thank you. Glad it was helpful for you!
Would you recommend doing the burning after the furniture is assembled?
No, I would not. When you burn after assembly, you are not going to be able to burn the parts of the wood where the pieces of the chair connect to one another. That will become the weakest link and where the wood starts to deteriorate first. I would alway recommend doing the burning before assembly so that you can make sure that ALL surfaces are treated/burned. Makes sense?
Dude you're such a legend. thank you so much for this video!
Wow! That's so kind. I really appreciate you and your comment. Are you building one of these?
building one now thanks for the info ,,im putting two metal plates under keep from burning the bottom out
Hi! Glad to hear that you are giving this a go. Let me know how it turns out. Be safe!
Can this type of Treatment be used on Pressure Treated Wood?
No! Definitely not. Pressure treated has a ton of chemicals in it and does not work with this preservation process. Think of pressure treated as the 'non-organic' way of preserving wood. Hope that clears it up for you.
I built mine inspired by your book! (Peek at my avatar to see, but it is very different too. :) Just now finishing interior)
That's so great! Good for you. Thanks for getting the book as well. Please let others know that you found it to be helpful. Much appreciated.
This young lady’s smile brightened my day😀very informative Thank you for sharing.
Ahh. Thanks! She brightens my day all the time. :)
Welp..my only disappointment is with the urine. It kust seems to have problem evaporating liquid, but that is because surface heat can burn solids but cannot readily get the pan hot enough to boil and evaporate urine. That needs to be done by heating the bottom of the pan like boiling water on the stove (however I have secured a netter option). BUT i will say this, for what I can do with the unit it works great on #2 with paper NOT wipes, but paper. The ash works great for garden and other fertilizer uses, because it is completely sanitized. Hope this helps.
Yup, completely agree. Thanks for the comment.
The idea behind this is to have a beautiful way to preserve the wood for a very long time. I believe the poly urethane will not hold up, outside, exposed to weather too long before it needs to be re-coated. Please advise.
Yeah, poly is not my first choice. Oil and occasionally reapplying the oil I find to be the best method. Kind of the way you would treat teak backyard furniture to maintain it's looks and longevity.
Just a thought but had you had a 4th board that was not burnt for reference for us to see the amount of color that came out, it would help. I may need to ‘sell’ this idea to my wife.
Ahh. yes. Good idea. I'll keep that in mind for future videos. Check out some of my other videos on the channel regarding this process. You may find one that resonates better with your wife. :)
Which method would prevent the least amount of dust from getting onto your clothes if you sit against it? Or what extra steps would you do to prevent the black dust from getting on your clothes?
The application of the oil and subsequent wiping down of the material clears 98% of any reside. When left in the elements for a while, it eliminates any remnants of dust that could come off on clothes. White linen pants maybe aren't recommended though...
@TinyIndustrial thanks! Also, thoughts on Refined Linseed versus Boiled versus...? Which linseed is best? Some are more expensive than others...
You’re taking a toxic chemical bath with all that pressure treated wood! Use cedar please
Yup, I know. It's really not that large a piece of pressure treated. Couple years later, I think that all the bad stuff is mostly out by now.
Woah, thanks for the succinct information! My husband and I lived in our tiny house for 3 years with the $5 bucket "composting" toilet system with standard facilities nearby. Now, 5 years later, we are looking to move back into our tiny house again, this time with kids and off grid! I will definitely be looking into incinerating toilets. Thanks for the tip!
Thanks! Glad that it helped you. Always good to know what all your options are.
very nice, thanks!
Thank you! Glad it was helpful.
Does it need 240 Volt electricity oer 120V regular house hold current?
They have both models. The 240 is faster since it can burn hotter (and faster). The 110 is what I have and I'm fine with it.
Shittt...i might just get me one
Did you? I think you should.
Can polyurethane be applied after applying tar for termite protection?
Hmm. likely not. I would use tar and termite protection in place of poly.
@@TinyIndustrial what do you use to waterproof them?
@@TaLeng2023 the burning is the part that protects/seals the wood. The application of oil just enhances that. There is no further waterproofing needed.
What size is the trailer
This build was done on a 5'x8' utility trailer I believe (or close to it).
Sorry to be commenting on a 3 year old video lol But would you still recommend this today? My thought is to install an incinerator toilet in a semi truck. The Cinderella brand offers a travel model, will this cheaper one be alright bumping around nearly 24/7?
Yes, yes and yes. Not sure about the Cinderella travel model. Can you provide a link to that? I'm not familiar with it. Also not sure if any of these toilets would work well in a truck. I have not seen that implementation. Air pressure from driving in conjunction with the vent process from this kind of toilet would likely cause some undesirable results.
Does it use up much electricity? I ned to get one for my garage bathroom. Garage is remodeled into a bedroom. One person will be using it daily.
Yes, it uses a fair amount of electricity. Having a usable toilet in a hard or impossible place to plumb is likely worth the trade off though in many cases.
was wondering of you used a wire wheel on a drill and went lightly rather than a wire brush or would you get swirl marks anybody know?
I don't know. I think that you might wind up roughing up the grain of the wood. May not lead to a desirable result. Have you tried it? Would love to hear how/if it works.
Fire.
How hard is it on your electric bill $ and how much do the liners cost ?
I think that at some point I worked it out to about $0.25-$0.50 a flush (depending on where you live) plus a few more cents for the liner. It's not cheap, but also not crazy costly.
@@TinyIndustrial Thats not bad at all for how well it works and not dealing with compost !
I'm a beekeeper, so I use raw limeseed oil mixed with beeswax and like the way that looks... medium to heavy burn unless it's eastern cedar with a nice grain pattern.
Very cool. I always thought that bees would be put off by the burn part, but glad to hear that they don't mind the scent.
I've charred the handle of a hand-tool of mine, but for the next step I was thinking if maybe a mixture of vegetable oil and ethanol could work for sealing the wood. Could it be possible?
Not sure why you would want to use vegetable oil on this. Not sure that's a good idea. Go out and buy some linseed oil. I wouldn't experiment with Mazola on one of these projects.
If its still that clean after 5+ years without maintenance im sold. I’d rather spend the 5grand on this rather than a whole septic system
Totally agree. The only thing to mention is that I only used it intermittently for 5 years and not in a 'full time' scenario. Either way, the unit is fairly maintenance free. Even septic systems need maintenance too...I agree that for me as well, this is the best solution.
