Israel, Hezbollah and Potential for Full Scale War
On October 8, the day after Hamas’ attack on Israel, Hezbollah launched an opportunistic attack on three Israeli posts in the Israel-Lebanon-Syria border region, claiming to be acting “in solidarity” with the Palestinian people. Since then, Israel and Hezbollah have traded thousands of rocket and missile attacks on a near-daily basis.
The tempo and intensity of attacks has increased in the past several weeks and some analysts are warning that full-scale war is “becoming inevitable.” Preventing escalation of the Israel-Hamas war into a broader regional conflict has been a primary strategic goal of the Biden Administration since October 7 - one it has pursued through diplomatic engagement and military deterrence.
On Thursday, June 20, J Street Policy Director Dr. Debra Shushan was joined by Lebanese journalist and Washington Institute senior fellow Hanin Ghaddar, former Deputy Head of Israel’s National Security Council Eran Etzion, and Brookings senior fellow and former CIA analyst Bruce Riedel to discuss the escalation between Israel and Hezbollah, the likely consequences of a full-scale war, and what can be done by the Biden Administration and others to prevent it.

    It is a shame that it took this long to determine that the popular uprising of Palestinians is not driven by Hamas. Israeli oppression, lies and deceit have engendered a sense of hopelessness among Palestinians that gives credence and justification to their intifada. I believe it is too late for peace. The U.S. has had its chance to intervene but the seriousness of its approach to peace between Israelis and Palestinians has been nothing but ridiculous. Its one-sided support of Israel and its two-faced, words-only support of a "peace process" has only proved that the U.S. is neglectfully responsible for this Middle Eastern catastrophe. It is time that the world community, which sees through this United States-Israeli pact of Palestinian oppression, takes on the problem and forces Israel to bend at the knee.

    While this session was informative and insightful, the fact is that those of us who volunteer on behalf of causes like this, whether as volunteers for J Street or for NIAC or for whatever, really would appreciate some guidance on what we can do going forward to help this process in terms of domestic American politics. As I understand it, the most important goal, from that perspective, is to prevent opponents from getting a veto-proof majority in the Senate for anti-diplomacy bills and resolutions. That being the case, it would have been helpful for J Street to have a discussion with someone familiar with Senate personalities who would have been able to recommend SPECIFICALLY which Democratic senators are on the fence regarding this issue who could be persuaded, through grassroots pressure such as phone calls and office visits, to stand with President Obama on this issue.

There was pretty much no effort to relate his perspective to J Street's positions or calls to action. If Likud and a huge portion of Israeli society explicitly don't want a two state situation to emerge, what does that say for J Street's advocacy which seems very connected to a two state plan.

    • @deskset7436

      I too wish that JStreet would provide some thought leadership beyond the two state plan, as it's not clear to me that Israelis will agree to any version of it that can possibly make it to the table. But every effective lobby group needs a clear point of view and JStreet's point of view is that two states for two peoples is in the best interest of both the State of Israel and the United States. Their hope is that if they do their work effectively, no one will need a Plan B.

    • @deskset7436
      @deskset7436 Před 10 lety

      I think it might be helpful to remember that Americans can't end the Occupation. We're not actually in charge of the Middle East. What we can do is to try to influence our own government to support Israelis who want to end the Occupation. That's it. The American government could, in theory, refuse to give Israel military aid unless it ended the occupation but there are real and strategic reasons that is unlikely to happen -- reasons that have nothing to do with JStreet or AIPAC. We could also refuse to buy Saudi oil unless it allows women to drive or people to vote but that is also unlikely to happen.

    Re what can be done: About a week ago, I started fiercely criticizing my local newspaper, the Lexington (Kentucky) Herald-Leader for 3 decades of systematic, "right-wing" bias on all of its news reporting on foreign conflicts. I did a close analysis of the Nation/World page of yesterday, 8/25/14, and found a "hard right-wing" & pro-war bias in 3 of the news articles. I could email my analysis if that would be helpful to you. One of the articles I ripped apart was the report, "Israel says missile strike killed Hamas official who handled 'terror funds': Bags of U.S. currency reportedly in vehicle." It was written by Fares Akram and Isabel Kershner of The New York Times. The NYT and Wash. Post are immune to such critiques, but what about a concerted effort to hit medium-sized city newspapers with a torrent of truth? I've bluntly accused them of having a hard right-wing bias in their NEWS reporting for the last 3 decades. Your thoughts?
