Pappe and Penslar both think that it was an ethnic cleansing but unlike Pappe Penslar says it was a disorganized situational one with no comprehensive plan or unity among soldiers and politicians. Benny Morris came to a similar conclusion years ago.

Benny Morris denies there was ethnic cleansing. Morris made clear there was no government policy and that when a Minister heard that some soldiers had forced Arabs out of their village during the course of a battle, the Minister made clear that any soldier who expels Arabs will be subject to a court martial. He also observed that there was no "massacre" at Deir Yassin. What took place must be understood in the context of what took place, such as the Arab attack on a convoy of Magen David Adom ambulances. The battle became very fierce and according to Morris, the Hagana "lost their heads" and civilians were killed as a result, but there was never any intention of so doing. Yet, Deir Yassin is deliberately and maliciously used by Pappé and othersw. Pappé admits he has no regard for historiography and teaches "propaganda!" What is "evidence" he asks, admitting he doesn't use evidence, but propaganda to "teach" students at University of Exeter where a generation will have been taught historical revisionism.
