The Tragedy of FOX After Breakfast (ft. Tom Bergeron & Laurie Gelman)
In this video, we unpack the story of the Fox After Breakfast, the ill-fated network adaptation of a brilliant cable morning show called Breakfast Time. Co-hosts Tom Bergeron and Laurie Hibberd provide their perspectives on what went wrong, in what is, to my knowledge, their first public reunion since the show's demise.
Corrections and notes will be posted at connro.com/corrections as they come to my attention.

Breakfast Time: America's Forgotten Morning Show

In 1994, a brand-new basic cable channel called fX brought the world a revolutionary take on the American morning show. Breakfast Time was live, loose, and phenomenal. Join me in this video as I gush over this critically underappreciated gem, which featured Tom Bergeron, Laurie Hibberd (now Gelman), and a puppet named Bob. My special thanks to Rob St. Clair for digitizing and uploading his outs...

In the final part of this series, we take a look at the decision to bring back Family Feud for a third run, the many different hosts and visual identities it bounced between in a 20-year-long search for cultural relevance, and the ultimate fate of the show under Steve Harvey. A very special thanks to Bob Boden for agreeing to be interviewed for this project! If I learn of any inaccuracies in th...

www.connro.com/ Almost immediately after Richard Dawson's tenure on Family Feud came to an end upon the show's cancellation, creator Mark Goodson began workshopping a reboot of his most successful game show in a long career of smash hits. He landed a fresh talent in comedian Ray Combs, and the show returned to television in 1988. However, this iteration of the show never took off like its prede...

www.connro.com/ Today, Family Feud is a ubiquitous piece of popular culture. Steve Harvey has catapulted the long-languishing franchise back into immense popularity for US audiences. But the show's original heyday may have been even more overwhelmingly successful. From 1976 to 1985, Family Feud dominated both daytime television and evening syndication, combining the intrigue of everyday people ...

Fast forward to 2024 and CW is as valuable as ever. In a confusing TV/ streaming/ cable industry where they want you to not only have the premium app, but still want you to have a cable service. CW has a broadcast channel with a free app. An old friend in the wwe will be providing Tuesday night wrestling with NXT while the nascar Xfinity series will be on Saturdays in addition to college football.

@connro The dismissive way you talk about the black shows on UPN is very sloppy. UPN was only able to experiment with different programming or even secure the buyout deal because of the loyal African American viewers who took a chance on a poorly run channel with a weird name. It was the loyal years of watching shows like Moesha, The Parkers, Half & Half, and Girlfriends that kept UPN afloat for years. On the nights these programs aired, some even beat shows on The WB easily. The WB, which geared toward a more white young audience, also struggled to beat ABC, CBS, NBC, or FOX. Please do better reporting.

Two very well-done documentaries! Like many, I loved "Breakfast Time" and disliked "FOX After Breakfast". BT was always real and energetic, and despite the craziness of it, treated its viewers with respect. Nothing ever felt contrived or forced or staged. BT was a perfect storm of just the right number of people in the right place in the right roles at the right time. We'll never see anything like it again, not even close. FAB, on the other hand, was a different story. Other than Tom and Laurie and Bob, there was nothing redeeming about it. I've always wondered whether the FOX executives in charge of FAB really wanted it to succeed from day one. I'm doubtful of that. Was really great to hear from Tom and Laurie on their reflections of both shows and the successes they''ve both had since then. Great job on both docs Connor, and can't wait to see what you do next!

I hope the show increases its Fast Money grand prize and the consolation prize for Fast Money loss. The show has been criticized by many fans for being cheap and said that the $20,000 prize isn't really life-changing money. I just hope that the Fast Money consolation prize becomes $25 per point and the Fast Money grand prize becomes $30,000.

Louie was underrated. I grew up with the animated series. Fox Kids back in the 90s was awesome! They had big names like Spider-Man, X-Men, Tiny Toons, Animaniacs. And then cartoons based on comedians like Bobby’s World and Life with Louie.

The legend should VA warning to everyone showbiz is not constant unless you're extremely popular so the thing to do is to save money and not spend carefree. Unfortunately Ray Combs found that out the hard way and as a young man of only 40. He got a fat salary with family feud but apparently it was more than he had before so he started spending money foolishly. I miss him I thought he was funny and hilarious and I'm really surprised more people did not pick him up as a stand-up comedian. Rest in peace Ray combs. I understand the demons you had and I sympathize I have the same demons except I have grandkids.

The failure for UPN to pick up "Malcolm In The Middle" and "American Idol" is amazing to me. "American Idol" was the TV show that actually brought FOX to the #1 status over the traditional "Big 3" networks for the first time. Could you imagine what UPN could have done with those numbers? So much unrealized potential.

For the record, I’ve seen Richard Dawson kiss men on the show before. It didn’t happen a lot, but I can remember at least two or three times when he did and it was no bigger a deal than when he kissed the ladies. The kissing honestly never bothered me, but I grew up with Richard Dawson as a fan of both Hogan’s Heroes and FF, and it just seemed totally natural. He was being a charming gentleman, and the female guests genuinely seemed flattered. And in many countries, a kiss is seen as a normal part of a first greeting between men, women, or whatever. It’s strange what different generations find creepy though. Personally, I think Lizzo making paintings with her butt and broadcasting it around the world for all to see is incredibly creepy as well as tasteless, and certainly not charming or endearing. I guess it’s all a matter of perspective.
