It was for the people 1400 years ago. Our Iman guide us in context of holy quran like because he is a descendant of Imam Ali ra. In Qur'an it says And We have vested everything in the Imam al-Mubin. It refers to imam of time. Like in Prophet pbuh IMam Ali was there. There were also imams before prophet. So the whole point our imam is like a living Qur'an us. I hope you understand :)
