If you're going to put together all the reels of Shanks in perspective, here's how Shanks' role is Shanks met Rayleigh and told Rayleigh that a certain boy said the exact same thing Roger said. Now, what did Luffy told Shanks that made Shanks remember Roger? On one of the scene in One Piece where Luffy told his crew about his dream, he said there are 3 people who knew about his dream, and we all know that Shanks is one of them. And Luffy said that Shanks cried upon hearing his dream. That could have been the reason that Shanks has decided to entrust the straw hat to Luffy. When the Roger Pirates went to the last island, Shanks and Buggy were left behind and Shanks told his captain that they will form their own crew and will find the one piece. However, there was this flashback scene where Roger talked to Shanks while Buggy was looking at the two behind a corner unable to hear the converation. And when Buggy asked Shanks to sail with him and look for the One Piece, Shanks told Buggy that he decided not to pursue the treasure at the moment. Buggy got frustrated with Shanks because in his mind he thought that Roger wanted Shanks to be the pirate king. Roger has entrusted Shanks to find the person who will fulfill Joy Boy's unfulfilled promises after 25 years. All Shanks' actions since hearing Luffy's dream are all connected to his captain's tasks for him.
