Goodbye, dprjones
If you'd like to honor him, upload a video and send a link by email to: dprjonestribute@gmail.com
We'd like the "raise a glass" to be a common theme, to honor dpr's memory.
czcams.com/video/7OMWHJ6H8nI/video.html
I've just recently learned the sad news about dprjones. He passed away back in January. He was a good friend and his departure leaves an absence in my life, as it might have for some of you.
I have some restrictions on what I put in my videos on CZcams as the result of my professional position, so I had to think creatively about how to honor a friend in a social media forum without appearing on camera. I hope you enjoyed: if it made you laugh, I think dpr would have appreciated it. For the record: it was science juice and now I have superpowers.
dpr believed strongly in the mission of the MSF: helping people in need without obligatory religious baggage. You can donate to the MSF if you are so inspired here:

So, thanks for the clarification in this video. I understand now, how the english (not my first language) word "gender", which so far simply ment "gennus" when describing forms in language, has been extended in meaning onto the social construct that nowadays many people, of whom unfortunately the far majority isnt capable of engaging in a clear and calm conversation, talk so much. Lets just recap, that the biolocical variety in between male and female human geno- and phenotypes even though there is a strong relation cannot function as an adequate/complete explanation to the social construct of this new meaning of the word gender. For social constructs, some are more or less forced on us (like money e.g.) and some are purely voluntary (like marriage e.g.). Some may even be exclusive (like citizenship). The social construct of gender is also an example of one that is purely voluntary. I really cant see nor feel any obligation for me to follow the sexually related fantasies of other people. People allways will seem to me how I see them and never how they want to be seen by others. Demanding doesnt really make things better for them, it just shows them to be cought in a state of confusion. If they want to play their new sexual fantasy game, they have to find voluntary participants, like in any other forms of sexual encounters.

You managed to make an over 8 minute video about the germ theory and so-called denialists and you didn't provide one single iota of substantive evidence based information on the foundational methodologies for finding a novel pathogenic microbe and proving it is the specific cause of a specific set of symptoms known as a disease. You mention logical fallacies - this entire video is an appeal to authority / begging the question / circular reasoning exercise. You don't have to mention Bechamp or Pasteur to refute the psuedoscience of the germ theory of disease - but you DO have to look at the foundational studies and the details of the methodologies for "isolating" a novel virus and proving it causes a novel disease. We can start with SARS and end with SARS-CoV-2 as the perfect place to begin shredding apart the house of cards that is virology.

I try not to write comments on youtube, but nostalgia has brought me back to this video. I wish to pay tribute for the intellectual journey which this video has aided me on. I present you with a paradox. No, of course there is no dragon in the garage, and you've argued perfectly well why we should discard such notions as nonsense. However, what are we going to do about the dragon in our garage? The impact it has on the physical world is demonstrable even with skeptics present. One only needs to consult the dragon enthusiasts to learn whether the garage dragon has strong feelings about you. You might not be able to escape the reach of the garage dragon if it seeks you out, as it does many across the world. And yes, the dragon could be a malevolent force. But recognize that the dragon could be a benevolent force as well. If we instead name that dragon "language", we can use it to clumsily bridge the gap from one person's mind to the next. If we instead name the dragon "reasoning", we could use it to construct arguments that garage dragons don't exist. Name it "rights" and we can use it to define which actions are or are not permitted among us. We could name it many things, such as capitalism, tarot, gender, anarchy, or "the correct side of the road", and they would all have different effects on the world. A dragon named "ethics" might be able to explain to us which of the other dragons we can trust, and which we should fight against. Thus, it is important paradox to remember that the garage dragon are made up, fictional, and yet very real.

Thank you for this video. I think your production skills are fantastic. I like the images and you speak very well. Your cadence is perfect. T. Midgley's work led to a great and lasting shift in human thought and consciousness. In his day, work focused primarily on solving the problem. Once a problem with solved the work was done. Leaded gas and CFCs provided perfect solutions to automotive performance and refrigeration / gas propellance. These were brilliant advances in chemistry and technology which changed the world. But I am not convinced that there weren't voices of concern for human and environmental health when these advances became popular. We knew lead as a potent toxin. One volatilized into the air and deposited into the soil, it doesn't require great genius to conceive that human and animal kind would take up the lead into our bodies. I think I'm safe to say DUH, without being overly judgmental. I think it was really deceptive when Mr Midgley didn't inform his colleagues or the public that he was sick with lead poisoning for a whole year. This circumstantial evidence shows he knew all along the grave dangers of his new product. He had to know. Chemists of old were much more hardcore people than we are today. Today I am not willing to work without a fume Hood, protective clothing and eyewear, plus a safer process to deal with laboratory waste. Old school scientists prioritized the work over their own health by tolerating much discomfort and even illnesses for the work. As for chloro or fluoro hydrocarbons, presently our modern world continues to be addicted. There is no uncertainty about ozone destruction from these refrigerants and propellants. We Love convenience. And when you can't breathe that little asthma inhaler is a lifesaver. We love to live all over the world, frequently this is made possible by air conditioning. Our industrial thinking still prioritizes short-term gain over long-term sustainability. If this guy hadn't imagined it somebody else probably would have. Many of these inventions are just discoveries waiting to be found by the right mind at the right time. My belief interprets it as this: errors are powerful tools purposed for human learning. Pain, wrongdoings, hurt are catalysts for elevating generational consciousness. Lead poisoning is so miserable and devastating to life that I doubt humanity will accept industrial lead poisoning ever again. Now we fight to prevent it. This current generation is blessed by the sustainability model of engineering. The entire product life cycle needs to be thought of and risk to human health of the environment must be evaluated alongside product usefulness.

Regarding your list of characteristics of Lysenkoism to look out for. - A single charismatic leader. It just happened to be this way, its really irrelevant. It could just as well be the case that its a group of scientists promoting the same ideas. And your second point of going against the majority of scientists in the field is also irrelevant, It could just as well be the consensus of an entire field. The main characteristic in my opinion is insularity, hostility to criticism and other ways of protecting certain ideas from criticism. I think the clearest form of Lysenkoism today is gender studies and similar fields. Here is what Charlotta Stern writes about gender sociology: In my experience as a sociologist, I see many ways in which gender sociology tends to insulate itself from challenges to its own sacred beliefs and sacred causes. The sacred beliefs are to the effect that the biological differences between the sexes are minor and that the cultural differences between the genders have little basis in biological differences. The scholarly findings that challenge the sacred beliefs come from anthropology, developmental psychology, evolutionary psychology, the neurosciences, genetics, biology, and many other fields. For many decades now researchers have amassed findings of differences in competitiveness, aggression, sexual interest, risk behavior, and many other traits, and differences in brain physiology and neuroimaging, by many different methods and approaches. I investigated a sample of top cited gender sociology papers to test my impression, and indeed the findings illustrate extreme insularity. It saddens me to see students and scholars fall into insular communities of highly dubious sacred beliefs and causes. I propose that gender sociologists strive to undo insularity. (Charlotta Stern is associate professor and deputy chair of the sociology department at Stockholm University.)

Hi Jonathan I read your article on the irreducible complexity of chemotaxis with interest because I had reached the same conclusion. As you say, it's not only the flagella engineering which appears statistically impossible to have arisen via natural selection, it's the combination of this with all which must align in the anatomy and physiology of all components facilitating chemotaxis. The number of components. The number of proteins. The precise positioning etc. Given that, even with a biased random walk, the system essentially overcomes random behaviour ie bringing about motility that moves towards attractants and away from repellents it is not surprising that multiple improbable phenomena must align. Of course there is something physical to permit a potential discernment ie as you move further from the source, the chemical dilutes and so a different concentration occurs between point A and B en route to source. This gives a differential to be detected but the means of sensing and directed motility is a far cry from the fact the potential is there. Has anyone tried to establish the probability of the flagella and chemotaxis occurring via random mutations (even taking into account some structures and proteins and mechanisms potentially preexisted eg the shift of usage of some anatomy)? I imagine it is statistically impossible. Have you also considered how certain phenomenon existed in an invisible state and yet the miraculous plasticity of organisms (and natural selection) brought them into play. Eg photons via photosensitivity became sensed and ultimately allowed sight. Molecules in atmospheres or fluids meant sound could evolve. Molecules to be sensed via smell (via lock and key and quantum phenomenon).etc... In other words, the evolution system coincidentally builds anatomy and physiology that takes phenomenon that preexisted billions of years and overcomes incomprehensible barriers in order to permit the sensing of these hugely varied information forms. But the real magic is the experience of qualia. The miraculous non physical yet correlating to said physical phenomena consciousness created minds eye models. These also must have been potentialities or they could not exist and yet they do (in a way mind would wish it). It's not that evolution wouldn't harness their existence but the fact 1. They exist (a miraculous phenomenon if not hyper normalised) and 2. The means arise that hone in on the ability to experience qualia (assuming the anatomy and physiology is in order to provide such experiences). It seems to me consciousness and intelligence is fundamental and this is not only responsible for life and all processes like evolution, but that it influences the evolutionary process such that it is not solely random mutations that drive it (likely a manipulation via quantum mechanics). I'm not sure this verifies most of organised religion foe me, but it does indicate fundamental intelligence and design. Keen to hear your thoughts. Best Matthew

I love Richard Feynman and have followed his advice since I was much younger. I am now around 60. I haven't always been liked for being honest though. I told one company I worked for after they asked me to assess a project for them, that they were wasting 50 K on a project that could be achieved for 3 K better using a microwave link and why. Well that didn't go well, because the people I was working with had already made plans to spend 50 K on their project, and I was being disruptive, rather than just giving it a rubber stamp. They spent the 50 K. Their system worked okay but it is now obsolete and they will spend more now having chosen their way, since that's the method they chose to employ. People needed to defend their incompetent descion rather than save the company money. I have no regrets though, since I would prefer to give an honest opinion over being a mindless "yes man"...

Why are some people so negative, so obsessed and upset over transgressions (voluntary or otherwise) of categories of sex and gender. Then I remember that it is but a symptom of our collective insecurities, so much of the culture is tied up on neat categorizations, so much depends on it. It starts with childhood stories and fairy tales and continues into adulthood with attires, bathrooms, languages, etc, etc, etc. I hope that some day we can rid ourselves of these needless chains as we mostly did with racial categories of the 19th century.
