It's just a song. The sixties sucked. Glamorizing a specific decade is real Dewy Cox. Walk Hard in your fantasizes.

How she gave me life.. And how she made it end... A beautiful song about life beyond tragedy.. This has to be be a jaded and cynical yet somehow wizened and grateful Theseus in the years following the death by suicide of his wife Phaedra. It would be nice to think he could still consider another attempt to possibly approach love after such a tumultuous and sorrowful early life... And I bet he DID learn.. 'very much'... from all the time spent with the entire Minoan Royal family, really... but perhaps especially with poor Phaedra. It's his in-laws and wife I feel most sorry for.. THAT family had some real problems. I don't imagine I would have enjoyed living on Crete in those days.

I like the sudden use of the horn. It really emphasizes the sense of adventure, danger and victory.

I was in grade school when this song came out. I lived on a dirt road, knew nothing about life outside my rural surroundings, didn't understand what this song meant, but thought it mysterious and beautiful. Something sophisticated people had experienced and would understand. Well, I never became sophisticated, and still don't understand what this song is about. But I hear it and recall being a lower-middle-class little girl, feeling as though a door to a "foreign" world had cracked open to give me a glimpse at a more exciting way of life. Fifty years later and I remember every word of this song.
