Halifax 7-0 Salford, 25 April 1903 (Northern Union Challenge Cup final)
A then record Rugby League attendance of 32,507 packed into Headingley, Leeds for the 1903 Challenge Cup final. On what was a hot and sunny day, Halifax's pack dominated the more nimble and athletic Salford team, scooping the silverware by 7-0.
Salford had not conceded a try in the previous four rounds (5 matches including a replay) until this final. However, according to the Manchester Guardian, the general consensus was that Salford were lucky not to concede more points. The same newspaper reckoned that Halifax supporters and Yorkshire sympathisers outnumbered those favouring Salford by 9 to 1.
This clip, part of the Mitchell & Kenyon archive, is taken from above the West Terrace.

Shaun Edwards scoring a try for Wigan during what was a rout for the Riversiders in boggy conditions at Burnden Park, Bolton. The game is probably more remembered for bouts of fighting on the terraces. Salford had shocked St. Helens in the quarter-final at The Willows, defeating Saints 22-18. Wigan went on to win the cup, defeating Halifax at Wembley. Salford: Gibson, Jones, Bentley, K. O'Lough...

This friendly at Thrum Hall took place shortly after the 1900-01 league season had finished. The West Riding club took the spoils by 8-2. Both Halifax and Salford resigned from their constituent county leagues to take part in an amalgamated Northern Rugby League for the 1901-02 season. It was one of the first appearances of the legendary Jimmy Lomas's in a Salford jersey after his transfer from...

Any help in pinpointing which game this was from in 1979 is much appreciated. Keith Fielding still holds Salford's record for number of tries in a season. In their Championship winning season of 1973 74, Fielding crossed the line 46 times for The Red Devils.

Is this when a try was worth no points but merely gave you a try at a goal? In other words, the opportunity to 'convert' your try into points?

Quite interesting that there would appear to be 14 players take the field for each team. At the time I think they were playing 12 a side which would mean 12 + 2 subs. Fascinating watching. Would love to see this colourised and speed adjusted. Interesting that these two teams met in the Challenge Cup final the year after.

WOW. What an insight to the era before...League and Union split, and all of the players or their children fought and died less than a dozen years later? Also...the facial hair was formidable.

Interesting, much more considering my big interest in the history of the modern football codes, back then you could see that the game implied moving the ball with the feet like in football thus we know why it is called Rugby Football.
