RAPID RESPONSE SAVES DROWNING VICTIM ON COLORADO RIVER
RAPID RESPONSE SAVES DROWNING VICTIM ON COLORADO RIVER
On Sunday, September 1, 2024, at 5:48pm, San Bernardino County Fire responded to reports of a drowning victim in Topock Gorge on the Colorado River. A Mohave County Sheriff’s boat was on proactive patrol in the Gorge when they were flagged down after an adult male jumped into the river from an elevated rock outcropping and failed to surface. Bystanders located the victim underwater and began CPR on a nearby beach.
The sheriff’s boat, staffed with deputies including a rescue diver/paramedic immediately responded while requesting assistance from allied agencies. The victim had no pulse and was not breathing. CPR was continued by deputies while they began piloting up the river to rendezvous with additional resources.
County Fire Boat 32 heard the initial request for assistance and responded from Pirate’s Cove. Additional patrol boats from San Bernardino County Sheriff also moved into the area while San Bernardino County Sheriff’s rescue helicopter was launched to the scene. Resources intercepted a few miles north of Topock Gorge where the victim was transferred to Boat 32’s paramedic crew while deputies from adjacent boats also boarded to provide continuous medical support of the patient. During this phase, the patient’s heart began beating on its own, however he was still not breathing. The patient was then escorted up to Pirate’s Cove for transfer to the rescue helicopter. Upon transfer to the helicopter, the patient had begun breathing and was starting to regain consciousness.
The patient was flown to University Medical Center, Las Vegas. Upon arrival, he was fully awake and talking with rescuers.
Holiday weekends along the Colorado River and Lake Havasu bring boating and water enthusiasts that number in the tens of thousands. San Bernardino County Fire and Sheriff along with our Arizona partners staff several additional resources over the holidays for rapid response to this very type of incident. The soaring cliffs of Topock Gorge block cell service along the water. Had it not been for the proactive patrol activities this incident would have had a very different outcome.
San Bernardino County Fire operates fire boats out of Park Moabi and Havasu Landing. On holiday weekends they are hard staffed and on the water for rapid response to watercraft accidents, fires and medical/traumatic emergencies. San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Air Rescue helicopter is staffed with two firefighter/paramedics for technical rescue, aerial fire suppression and rapid medical treatment and transport.

You guys are so cool
My house bunt down when i 16 it still bothers me and I'm 45. sorry for your loss
RIP to Jose Navarro and the other souls lost in the mudslides on Christmas Day 2003 . 🕊️
Well if it happens every 20 years or just about, then you should be prepared and have better land management of those areas, right?
Super work! Crazy how much fire and heat one shrub can produce!!
So we’re due?
its crazy that it took this building being burnt like three times for them to finally demolish this building
Fantastic video. As a Foothills resident everyone of us should watch it!
The fine people of San Bernardino are lucky to have the brave men and women of SBCF. You guys are the best
Also done using forestry mulchers! :)
We had lived in Upland CA, from 1984 to 1992. During that time, there was the Texas fire in 1988, that kept my scanner busy, units at scene kept asking for more help every 15 minutes, for a while. Locals also talked about the 1974 era fire, that covered a lot of the same area. I also remember a controlled burn in 1986, around San Dimas, where they said there had been no fires in decades.
Another example of Mayor Helen Tran lack of leadership in the city of San Bernardino, where she allowed homeless people to set up residence at a abandon building located right by City Hall!
Yea that call was wild I was recording down wind from the smoke vent group was making holes to let out the heat
How about telling us what building? Is it a secret?
Old carosel mall
The historic old Harris department store building!
@@RAIDERNICK1950 this is correct
When will people learn they don't belong in the forests!! If you move in a forest, it's all on you!!!
nowhere is totally safe. you sound goofy.
I live in the forest and would not move back to ghetto San Bernardino, Higland anywhere in the I.E. I lived in Yucaipa 36 years and it’s fine to crap with development. I know the risk living in Crestline and will take it over the mess the valley has become.
Do you guys collaborate with CALFIRE Law Enforcement?
Some historian may look back at the very stupidest decisions so-called "educators" and administrators have made. Top of my list is defunding driver education as mandatory for high school graduation, and very high percentage of in-car "Drivers' Training."
Because California Government took away all hazard reduction burns which would slow the spread of fires ever broke out. 💩💩🤮
I wish PBS would broadcast this video.
Yeah it is, 81 is scheduled for a truck but not until next year
The truck company it must be truck 77 or truck 71
I have mixed feelings about the statements about getting out of the firefighters way. I was in the Old Fire as a civilian, a Navy fire fighting trained civilian. I was on Golondrina between Eureka and Foothill at my grandpa’s house putting out spot fires that broke out at his and a bunch of the neighbors houses. Everyone had evacuated and there were no fire trucks in the neighborhood. The palm trees were burning and blowing fire balls everywhere into yards igniting bushes and any flammable things they touched. I was prepared to leave if I had to but I didn’t. I saw houses burning three blocks over, west of Sterling Ave and held the line. I can’t say for sure how many houses I saved by myself but I know that the areas I put out fires and friends houses that I rigged with sprinklers didn’t burn down. The sad thing is those neighborhoods have deteriorated seriously in 20 years and if there was another incident like the Old Fire the property loss would be astronomical compared to what it was. There’s really nobody left who lived through it. My grandpa passed away a couple years ago and we sold the house and the new owners are a shining example of people who don’t care for a property. I tried warning them and other new residents that they need to make sure those houses are kept clear of debris and crap everywhere but they don’t care.
Amazing, these are big guys and incredible heroes! If only to allow her family to lay their precious daughter to rest, and solving such an egregious crime. They are truly committed to life and soul. They are beyond commendable. God bless you gentlemen!
That saw sure is tuned right. Got it 4 strokin
Love the font choice!
Can you hire more so I can work with you? Lol
Good ol Buckthorn Ave.
Dip tanks don't work. EV car fires can be containerized using an EV fire blanket. A water mist (approximatly 10 gpm) is enough water to keep the thermal runaway problem in check. The fire service is only responsible to protect life and property, not EV batteries from cradle to grave. Chief Munsey needs to look at the chemistry and physics of LIB fires with particular attention paid to the negative effects of excessive water application (i.e. dip tanks). LIB fires are classified as energized electrical equipment which is a Class C fire per NFPA 10. Why is he then advocating for spending over $1 million dollars to extinguish a fire that is made worse with water? Chief Hughes Battalion 1 (retired) Chicago FD

Good job Mike!

So sad. All the birds and animals that died or lost their homes. I’m from the NW of Scotland and we’ve seen a massive rise in wild/hill fires over the last 20 years and they’re directly linked to climate change. Even now, after the coldest wettest April I can remember, and I’m 46, weeks have a warning that we are at extreme risk for wild fires. All our firefighters are volunteers and they work hard to quell the fires. Seeing these massive fires in North America makes me so sad - a lot are caused by morons doing things they shouldn’t and that then results in these fires that cause misery and pain. RIP to all those, including the brave firefighters, who lose their lives fighting the fires.
Amazing…
Difficult fire and access. Well done!!
Can you do more of these station videos 😊
Hopefully the resident who will was injured, makes a speedy recovery. For the amount of fire showing, a 35 minute knock down is outstanding ( great job guys) Thank you to all firefighters everywhere for protecting the citizens of your coverage area.
