Lessons From a Turnaround Principal
The results-driven, high-achievement-at-all-costs cultures that plague many learning communities fuel educational inequities and harm students. In particular, students of color and other marginalized student groups like diverse learners, multilingual learners (MLs), and students living in poverty find themselves victims of school practices and cultures that fail to meet their needs adequately.
In this webinar, the first turnaround principal in Illinois, Dr. Lionel Allen, will share how establishing and maintaining a culture of C.A.R.E. can address the academic failure and social exclusion that often characterize marginalized students' experiences. Participants will learn how to establish a culture built on Cultural responsiveness, Affirmation, Relationships, and Empowerment that will improve experiences and outcomes for these students.

Dr. Margo Gottlieb is renowned for her innovative insights into authentic assessment in language learning and her pioneering work on bilingual education policies. Her publications have not only expanded the theoretical framework of linguistics but have also had tangible impacts on educational practices, empowering educators to better support multilingual learners in diverse contexts. Dr. Gottlieb taught me about authentic assessment for multilingual learners to evaluate their language proficiency and cognitive skills in real-world contexts, reflecting their actual abilities and experiences. The book you refer to ASSESSING MULTILINGUAL LEARNERS: Bridges to Empowerment is a MUST read for all educators working with multilingual learners. Dr. Gottlieb has devoted her professional career to improving educational opportunities for multilingual learners and supporting those of us in the field. I ADMIRE and RESPECT her!!! Thank you for interviewing an educator of this caliber.

This is based on discredited data. A recent audit of SFUSD's math curriculum shows what a disaster this has been. They are retuning a pathway to Algebra I to 8th grade and revising their internally created math curriculum. Over the last many years NCTM and other outlets have been repeating the district's claims of success without asking to see the raw data. Public data requests show that the success is not what it seems to be. 40% of the last class taking Algebra I in 8th neither failed (4% did) or repeated. There used to be an exit exam which they removed after delaying it to 9th grade. Students before the delay had to get C and pass the exam before they could take Geometry. 27.5% had to repeat. The delayed group had to get a D to be promoted. The actual comparison is the last group who took Algebra 1 in 8 had a 4.2% failure (F) and the first group delayed had a 6.6% failure (F) Also California pre common core had a Algebra I in 8th mandate. So everyone in the state had to take it by 8th. SFUSD didn't allow students to take it before 8th. So everyone took in 8th before and then in 2014 everyone took it in 9th. They also made up a class called the compression class which purported to combine Algebra 2 + Precalculus. They used this to claim an increase in advanced math enrollment. The problem? It doesn't contain enough state precalculus standards so the state colleges recognize it as Algebra 2. It isn't precalculus. They haven't increased advanced math enrollments. A Stanford study which was released before this book was published also shows this isn't working. I can't post links because it will be deleted but people can google Hetchinger Report and "detracking math didn't work as advertised " for more information.

That claim at 14mins that Collective Efficacy is more than 3 times other factors like socio-economic factors etc is contradicted by many reputable studies e.g. The American Statistical Association concluded that teachers account for about 1-14% of the variability in test scores, and that the majority of opportunities for quality improvement are found in system-level conditions. In other words, most of what explains student achievement is beyond the control of teachers or even schools, and therefore arguing that teachers are the most important factor in improving the quality of education is simply wrong.

Very few people take the time to think through their relations with others. There are the cool kids who just know that some other kids are "not cool". There are the Jocks who are ... well, Jocks. I remember my first day as a Substitute teacher and saw some of the notes from the regular teacher in class. And I was instantly aware that he knew quite a lot about the kids based on some comments. I have to respect educators - even though personally I get frustrated at times - for their competence and abilities. But there may be others... Can you divide teachers into those who are research teachers who may not see why kids are different and educators who look at details involving each student to see how students are developing and learning?
