Over Painting a Bistre: Direct & Indirect Method to Build Textures
Utilizing a combination of both Direct (Block-in Technique) and Indirect (Glazing) Painting Methods to create textures allows the artist to build upon subsequent layers.
Typically, a Bistre (Imprimatura Technique) is used at the beginning stages of a landscape to establish composition and major shapes. Once dried, the artist can start to Block-in color local color, focusing on Hue and Value, before proceeding to build mid-tones and and introduce the beginning stages of textures. By Using a direct method, the artist is in more control of the stages of detail as opposed to an Alla-Prima method ('From the Beginning'), while indirect methods (glazing) allow to subtly shift hues to appropriate levels of value and saturation of color.

Indirect Painting: The Glaze
zhlédnutí 2,8KPřed 3 lety
Glazing is the process of applying a thin layer of transparent paint over a more opaque layer. This allows preliminary layers of color or value to influence the top, most visible layer. In its essences, a glaze is achieved by adding a higher ratio of medium to pigment. Naturally by increasing the amount of medium, the paint becomes more transparent and its viscosity more fluid. Perspective Projection vs. Isometric Projection--Two Point Perspective

Linear or point-projection perspective is one of two types of graphical projection perspective in the graphic arts; the other is parallel projection. Linear perspective is an approximate representation, generally on a flat surface, of an image as it is seen by the eye.
Direct Overpainting: The Block In Technique
zhlédnutí 413Před 3 lety
The direct painting approach involves laying down colors opaque or semi opaque paint on the canvas with relative, local hues and tones as they are perceived from the subject. The aim is to cover the canvas’ ground/imprimatura completely, leaving little to no raw ground/imprimatura uncovered. The aim is then to match the colors from the reference scene from the offset color, building in details ...
The Verdaccio Technique--aka 'The Dead Layer' for Portrait Painting
zhlédnutí 1,5KPřed 3 lety
Verdaccio is the Italian name for the mixture of black, white, and yellow pigments resulting in a grayish or yellowish (depending on the proportion) soft greenish brown. Verdaccio became an integral part of fresco painting, in which this color is used for defining tonal values, forming a complete monochromatic underpainting. Often architectural details in frescoes are left in verdaccio without ...
Surface Preparations for Painting

Whether you are buying pre-made stretched canvas, buying roll-raw canvas, or even building your own panels from wood, MDF, you really should gesso your surface. Gesso is a ground, typically made from plaster of paris, chalk, gypsum, or other whiting mixed with glue, applied to smooth surfaces such as wood panels, plaster, stone, or canvas to provide the surface with an absorbent layer that acts...
The Imprimatura Technique

The term 'Imprimatura' derives from the latin adverb imprimis meaning firstly- describing the first layer and process of transferring visual information to the canvas. The term Imprimatura in the video describes the etymology of the term as -to print- which is incorrect.

The Grisaille (Grís or Grey) Technique
zhlédnutí 9KPřed 3 lety
The Grisaille is a method of under painting that utilizes glazing to produce an inner glow that seems to come from within the painting. The bluish-grey/neutral tones of the the Grisaille (Root Word: Gris- or grey;French) allows light to pass through the transparent layers of color (glazes) and reflect off the Grisaille, producing luminous qualities.

The Bistre (Brown) Technique

The Bistre Technique establishes tonal range quickly. Using only one pigment color (I use Gamblin's Transparent Oxide a Warm Earth Red think Rust), the vaqlue range is established by using varying viscosity of mixtures of the same color (Thin, Not so Thin, and Not Thinned) to produce Mid-tones, shadows and highlight. This technique produces quick results that dries in a day when used with a dry...

Great job with this but one important point, this is bistre in name only. Actual bistre is made from the soot of wood, it's not paint it's more like an ink. This is an underpainting in oil which looks like it was made with bistre.

Pigments are pigments (soot of wood). Only the binder differs in media. A bistre differs from a verdaccio or a grisaille. The name bistre/imprimatura implies the technique of underpainting in a wash/ thin layer, which can be done in many media.

When you are glazing over a grisaille, are you using the same colour you would use if there was no grisaille, or has the colour been modified BECAUSE of the grisaille? Thanks

  • @sonsoftheedelweiss72

Sir to understand u use different colors for various objects in the painting when you glaze

    • @longtinart
      @longtinart Před rokem

Yes. Typically I am thinking ahead as to how I want the appearance to be. It’s similar to playing chess, you need to plan ahead. If you can image painting a honey crisp apple, typically I would start with my yellows and slowly shift to oranges and reds throughout the layers. Letting each layer dry between- building highlights as I go.

I taught myself this method following intense research and precious little was obtained here in America. Most of my sources were European and Russian. Been painting in this method for almost 30 years now and would never return to Direct painting after mastering Indirect Painting. I currently teach and lecture on this method and I've yet to encounter another artist who prefers Direct painting after learning Indirect Painting.

They really aren’t that much different in viscosity. I don’t paint much in watercolor, but the key to this is getting the viscosity right. It needs to be thin but not so much that it runs right off the canvas. Wiping out your highlight prior to the fist stain layer drying, as long as you’ve put in the time to your sketch- it shouldn’t take that much time, dependent upon the size. Adding shadows wouldn’t be an issue at all, as you could take your time with it. Hmmm….
