Let's Photograph Some Birds! - Nikon Z8 + 600mm F6.3 VR S
I'm back at one of my favourite birding locations; Lydney on the River Severn. It's a location I adore due to the wide variey of species which call it home, from beautiful waders feeding on the tidal shores to the birds of prey who make a meal of passing pigeons and smaller wildlife.

The joy of having a patch is watching the environment change as the year progresses. As the landscape naturally changes different species come and go and with Summer in full force, dragonflies and larger insects are numerous as are the raptors. I spent two days watching a pair of Hobby Falcons hunt over a lake. Mesmerized by their agility and grace... Not a bad day down the local. I'm Damian Jo...

Lydney is quickly becoming one of my favourite bird photography locations. Not forgetting opportunistic birds of prey who take advantage of the healthy bird and rodent population helping to keep nature in balance. I'm Damia...

Wow! Amazing shots and footage of the buzzards Damian! 👍
@@juliangreaves4727 cheers Julian! 😀
A great video Damian, good picture quality and some really nice shots of the Buzzard and Wheatear, I like your approach to your photography in that you’re just happy being out in nature if you don’t get nonstop action, the great outdoors is a great place to be whatever, the rest is all a bonus, look forward to your next trip out 👍👏📷🦅
Thank you Terry! Lovely to know people understand my content, that's exactly it. Can't be all nonstop action so may as well learn to appreciate your surroundings regardless. 😀 Cheers!
@@damianjohnwildlife a lot years spent Carp fishing with many many blank sessions for days on end teaches you to learn to just love the surroundings you’re in, plus being a wildlife photographer myself it comes with the territory, it’s a pleasure watching you out looking to nail those great shots 👍
That was a strange place to see a squirrel, but how lovely. The wheatear was the icing on the cake - where I live they seem few and far between this year, I don't know why. We do get lots of buzzards though - definitely 'common'!
Yeah it really confused me, but looking back I figure that the dense rocks and boulders may provide some nice protection from the elements... Hoping it doesn't flood of course 😣
That's a cracking pic of the Buzzard! I also never have any success with these (in Norfolk) probably because they are so sh*t scared of us humans here! I've never even come remotely close to getting a shot of one that good! 😊
Cheers mate! It's a shame nothing else really decided to come close that day 🤣
@@damianjohnwildlife A win is a win! 😄
👍
Hi Damian! I work in Lydney, whereabouts were you filming from, as I would like to go there and take some shots, looks amazing. Keep up the good work.
Heya mate, thank you! It's directly next to Lydney harbour. You can follow a small path from the train station
Ah! Brilliant I know it well! It’s called the tack! Will take my camera to work next week and have a camera break there! Thanks 👍🏼next time you are in the Forest go to Woorgreen opposite the crematorium just outside Cinderford, lots of deer, ponies and highland cows and other wildlife there 👍🏼👍🏼
It my favourite location too at the moment but yesterday went to Grimley instead, usual suspects I should of gone to Lydney. .ps keep up the good work videos are amazing 👏 👌👍
Thank you so much 😀 I love it there so much, so quiet too. You can sit in total peace for hours. Really cool species pop up too
Some days it just doesn't happen and others you can fill your card. I know Buzzards are quite common but they are so hard to get a good shot of, that perched shot is as good as I've seen (most like it are usually taken from a baited hide), great stuff as always.
Thank you for the comment 🙂 it's really refreshing to know that people understand the process and accept the fact that not every day is going to be a winner. Thank you!
Squirrel and composition of video is perfect, i like music also
Cheers mate!
Your video footage and photos always look so beautifully lit and sharp, the buzzards especially so.
Thank you so much! 😀
I love Cannock chase, so much to see!
It's a really cool location, I feel like I've barely scratched the surface there
@@damianjohnwildlife yes I've been around hardly any of it, I've seen so much though warblers, stonechats finches redstart, birds of prey, hobby, kestrel, buzzard, sparrowhawk, Thrushes, Kingfishers, nuthatch, woodpeckers, cuckoos, skylarks, pipits. Just to name a few!
Fantastic 🎉 incredible
Cheers! I got real lucky that day 😀
Kingfishers are always such a treat! I would love to see the European version someday
Ahha likewise i'd love to see the US version one day 😀
Definitely your best yet, fantastic shots, was lucky enough to see a Hobby catch a House Martin right overhead in my garden! The Hobby turned 180 degrees and grabbed it from underneath with its talons pointing upwards, incredible manoeuvre, sadly no camera to hand. You have nailed it again.
Thank you for your kind words! And wow, I'd love to have seen that, their manoeuvrability is stunning!
Thanks for the video! I also have an RF 2x teleconverter and I found that I didn't really gain much detail vs cropping in and as you mentioned, the functionality you lose when trying to hit birds in flight made it just not worth it. I've considered selling my 2x but hanging onto it for now for those rare times I'm only shooting something far away. As an aside, that 200-800 has proven to be quite the fantastic lens.
Thank you for your comment 😀 I think the 2x is a useful bit of gear for the exact the reason you state, the amount of times I've arrived at a lake to find all the wildlife are on the opposite bank half a mile away. I may not get an award winning shot with the 2x but sometimes it's nice to get a record shot.
Another great video!
Thanks again! 😀
I really enjoyed your video. It has such a peaceful and relaxing vibe, beautifully connected to nature. 💚 You got my subscription! 👍
Thank you Emma! 😀
hi would you be interested in joining one of my livestreams ?
Heya mate, thank you for the comment but unfortunately not for me, cheers!
Fantastic photos 😊
Thank you!
The grey heron footage - that was stunning. And beautiful captures of the swallows and lapwings too. And the hobby....! Superb! Well done! As always, a relaxing, enjoyable watch.
Thank you 😀 I was so pleased with the Hobby 😊
Nice shots of the Lapwing Hobby and Buzzard Damian 👍
Cheers Terry!
Good video of one of my favourite places to get the Hobbies hunting the dragonflies. Check the voiceover text in the video, quite a few errors.
On the subtitles? I'll have a look, I tend to let the software do it's thing but looks like a more manual approach may be needed. Cheers!
Hi Damian, good shot of falcon and lapwing! I've never managed to take a decent photo in flight😅 Here in summer there are not only kingfishers, but also bee-eaters, and this year we also saw sea jays for the first time 🥰
Oh wow, I'd love to see a bee-eater in the wild, occasionally they pop on over to the UK but I've never been able to go check one out.
Lovely photos of the Hobbys Damian, I’d be proud of them as well.
Thank you! 😀
Some amazing photos and video footage there.
Thank you!
Another great video…hope to see you at Ladywalk again
Cheers mate! I'll be down again soon enough 😎
Must go spend some more time at Ladywalk if the raptors are that active at the moment.
So this video was shot around two weeks ago but I think there should still be a few Hobby knocking about. They're so fun to watch darting above the lake!
Saw Great Crested Grebes feeding babies at Blithfield last weekend so they may just be late this year as I thought the same as you to be fair.
Love the scenery!
It's a beautiful area, I'm actually heading back there right now!
Some superb shots as is usual on your trips. It's so relaxing watching your videos, a great combination of informative narration, great video and photos. Going to Ladywalk myself tomorrow, if I see half of what you saw I'll be happy! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for the kind words across my videos 😀 This video was shot around two weeks ago but I believe the Hobby should still be about, good luck!
A relaxing trip you shared with us to RSPB Sandwell. Very good narration too along with great photos. I'm glad you keep it real, we all have those days where wildlife seems to disappear, but the added bonus is just being out there amongst nature, good for the soul. Keep up the good work!
Damian. Hobbys do eat Dragonflies. But also small birds like swallows and other birds.
@@undeaddave as much as I love swallows, it would be really interesting watching a hobby attempt to hunt one
I think you’re right, best yet, video work very nice. The hobby is one raptor we don’t have in US, at least southern part. Thanks
Thank you Gregory! I was really pleased with the images from this one, cheers!
Great photos and video footage. Looked like a great way to spend a day or two. Keep up the fine work 👍
The absolute best way to spend a few days. Cheers for watching!
So cool 🎉
Cheers!
Nice!
Thanks - great vid!
Thank you!
So many great birds in flight vids during this video! Not always the easiest so props to your camera skills
Cheers for the kind words mate!
Thanks for the video Damian, looks lovely in that part of the world. I wish Canon would make some more affordable 600 and 800 primes like Nikon. I have the R5 mk1 with the 100-500L which is great but would love a lightweight 600 prime ( not their current extendable ones ). One day Canon might see the light so to speak 😊
Hello Doug, thank you for the comment! I completely agree, I wish they'd make some too. Like the 600mm & 800mm lenses are nice and lightweight but being stuck at F11, it's tough (much like the 200-800mm at F9). Being able to get one of Nikons lightweight primes was one of the main reasons I switched. I absolutely adore their 600mm F6.3.
Thank you very much for another cracking video always a joy to watch, I popped down to Lydney yesterday afternoon to scope the place out I will be returning..ps glad you found your lens hood..👌👍
Thank you for watching! From my two recent visits, I really enjoy the place. 😀 By the looks of it, that area of the Severn seems like a real gold mine.
Wow...a peregrine! it's not easy to spot 😊 Maybe the bird is a song thrush 🤔
We got so lucky with the peregrine that day, they gave us some fantastic views 😀
Very nice, good effort, hard work.
Thank you!
Amazing place mate 🙂
It's very quickly become one of my favourite locations!
Another very watchable video. Great to see the marsh harrier and the peregrine!
Thank you! I wish the marsh harrier was just a tad closer but regardless, I'm thrilled to have seen it 😀
Really loved the Ringed Plover shots! Great video as always
Thank you for watching again!
Welcome to the Z8 community! It is a joy to use as you say. The Nikon lenses are simply tops for wildlife as well.
It's great being back! I really missed my old Nikon gear and as you say, the lenses for wildlife are fantastic!
Very enjoyable and relaxing to watch after a fraught day.
I hope you're doing ok ☺️ cheers for watching!

Glad you enjoyed it, cheers! 😄
