Prague (Czech: Praha /ˈpra.ɦa/) is the capital and largest city of Czechia, located in the western part of the country in Central Europe. The city lies along the Vltava River (known in German as the Moldau).
As the historic capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia and the birthplace of the Czech people, Prague flourished in the 14th century during the reign of King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV, who established it as the capital of the Empire.
Described by André Breton as “the magical capital of Europe,” Prague enchants visitors with its romantic atmosphere. The city’s magical allure stems not only from the legendary presence of 16th-century alchemists but also from the rich tapestry of cultures that have blended within its walls, particularly the prominent Jewish community in the Josefov district of the old town.
Situated along the winding Vltava River, Prague has evolved from a royal and imperial city to a sleepy provincial town and, ultimately, to the vibrant capital of a modern state. The city is often referred to as the mother of cities, with an unrivaled architectural and artistic heritage built up over centuries.
The music of composers like Mozart, Dvořák, and Smetana fills the air as you explore Prague. The city's cafes echo with the spirited debates of artists and intellectuals, who have reconnected with their past after periods of domination by more powerful neighbors. As evening falls, the shadow of the Golem appears on the walls of the Jewish quarter and its cemetery. While Kafka's presence still lingers around Prague Castle, the oppressive specters of Stalinism have fortunately left the presidential palace.
The Old Town Hall, established in 1338, served as the administrative center of the Old Town. Its oldest part features a beautiful Gothic tower with a bay chapel and a unique astronomical clock known as the Orloj, where the twelve apostles appear every hour between 9 am and 11 pm. The eastern wing of the Town Hall, rebuilt in the Gothic Revival style, was destroyed during the Prague Uprising on May 8, 1945, and was never reconstructed.
