Like a wood brothers nascar pit stop.
Brill..audiences really piss me off clapping on the 'on' beat grrrrrrrrrrrrrr
I still don't get why this is supposedly so amazing.
This is done more often than you think. Singers are notorious for coming in too soon or too late and the band can usually and easily adjust.
They should make a blues song called "piggy backer" where the 6th string breaks during the solo. Then another person could analyze it. Again
That vocal walkdown at 5:33 was absolutely superb!
I sing in a band, and technically the drummer is the band leader but I can always keep him in line by threatening to start clapping 1-3 if I don't get my way. Works every time.
THE WROOOOOONG CHIPS BEST ;LINE BUT ITS NOT HER FACE YEAH
This was the best explanation/description! Thank you!
Hi Is the full video out there on youtube. Great video post too.
Ok, but what's actually wrong about clapping on 1 and 3? They're the more important beats, so it only makes sense to me that you'd want to accentuate them. I' don't know much about music, so I wanted that explained more than the actual trick.
You can also do this with a bar of 3 as well.
Yeah that's how you make white audiences do jazz
Having the numbers and the symbols in opposite corners doesn't help at all
His guitar tech should've considered a side gig as a formula one mechanic as well
No doubt...
Why do I feel like I'm the only one who understands this. It's not a full beat. It's a half beat. You're explaining this in double time, which would make it 8/8 to 9/8.
Maybe the graphic is off, but they are still clapping on 1 and 3.
as a drummer, i also didn't notice but did notice they suddenly started clapping on 2 and 4. that visual was perfect!
clapping on 1/3 is a sin
Coping with a "Severely Caucasian" Audience! Critical of the Rhytidectomy challenged Theory.
im not a musical expert the first time i heard it i thought "heh, he messed up there" but then i realized the song feels nicer once he made that "mistake" now that i understand that was purely intentional, i can't help but be amazed at his skill
This is a great video. Obviously Harry is super talented & educated & clever, but I think that there are a bunch of us who wish he just wouldn't sing. Not because he's off pitch because he never is but because the timbre of his voice just sounds strained and unpleasant. We're told that we're supposed to like him because he's so brilliant but I think there are a minority who do not like to listen to him.
Crazy how he managed to do this mid-song in front of the crowd!
Don’t get me wrong This guy is immensely talented But this was not a very difficult thing to pull off I don’t understand why I see so many vids about this moment truly 🤷♂️
Considering the fact that Joe has stated that Stuart Zender was one of his main influence, this must have been a sureal experience for him and everyone on the stage… can’t imagine how Stratton must have felt when Jay Kay praised Vulfpeck too. Antwaun + Jay is a match made in heaven, what a night
Brilliant! Thanks to the comments that point out the drummer's celebration. Heartwarming to see it for this old jazz fan here.
Since the normal inclination is to clap on the 2 and 4 I'm curious how why the audience is clapping on the 1 and 3. Generally folks don't just engage in full on clapping accompaniment of a solo instrument like a piano or guitar unless encouraged by the performer (normally imho) so I will speculate Harry encouraged them to clap .... If this was the case, did he (or they) start the clap on the 2 and 4's? or the 1 and 3's? anyway - great posting
Pretty fly!
Lmao that's genius. I wonder if he improvised it on the spot? Or did he do it regularly cause people always clap wrong?
very interesting video
I thought the 5/4 was a reference to his height. In person, he's a short man but somehow google says he's 6'1.
I have no idea what this is about but it was still entertaining😀
That's because it is natural and easier on the ears to put the beat on one and three. Two and four is an antipestic beat for rock and roll. It is an unnatural beat that is forced. It's also very hypnotic. Think of rock concerts and all the crazy things that happen there.
Putting the beats in one corner and the clap symbol in the other corner was dumb, they should have been either right next to each other or one above the other, would have been much easier to see the sync.
Handsome son of a gun.
This would be a long listen, had I stayed...
As a former drummer, I now see Harry Connick Jr as a wise and noble musical mage. Amazing way to fix this!
DID I see it? No, I heard it
I don't understand why clapping on the 1 & 3 is bad?
especially in jazz, 2 and 4 are the strong beats. clapping on 1 and 3 just throws off the feel
This seems especially tricky to pull off, given the time it takes sound to travel. If the audience claps on 1 & 3, then from the musician’s perspective, they’re clapping somewhere between the beats. So he moved their clapping from beats ~1 1/2 and 3 1/2 to ~2 1/2 and 4 1/2.
This is why I don't play for people who don't know music.
I might not have the best ear but I do play gigs and I just say It’s loose AF anyway you slice it 🤷♂️
I just love the way Harry connick jr sings it’s like magic
Harry Connick Jr. Is a good piano player but a fucking terrible singer
He's a good singer as well

The BEST guitarist that ever lived!
It would only be easy for a cock-eyed dude to see this correcty with the way you put the numbers on either side of the video.. Way to go.
He didn’t manipulate the audience…..they manipulated him.
I already know what this is going to be. The "I Love Rock and Roll" thing. :). I had heard the song thousands of times on the radio but until I sat down to play the extremely simple drum part one day, I din't pick up on the 5?4 measure. I was so confused LOL. It's my favorite trick to play on people who kind of know the basics of drumming. I also loved getting my experienced band mates to clap along. Also , I once saw a drummer sit in with a band and was oblivious to the 5/4 measure. She was on, then off, then on, then off.
I am so confused??? To me they were always clapping on beats 2 and 4. Like the I am conditioned to immediately assume that clapping needs to be done on 2 and 4 so I perceive the 1 as the beat that goes before beat 2. Like I don’t agree with the counting shown in the video. To me the 1 never changed and there wasn’t even a 5th beat added😭
most tv audiences clap on the 1
