Ooh, shiP money
Phew! I’ve had to view this in two parts, but there was no way I was going to miss it. Talk about how the other half live and how the landscape and social-scape has changed over hundreds of years, wars and revolutions… this has it all with both solid and dotted lines back to Ince and Wigan. Thanks for the effort, research and delivery. (Technology worked well too)
Greatstuff
Churchill had a comparison of the English soldier vs the Boer.
Thank you for watching my presentation, I hope you enjoy it. Apologies for my slip at 27.54 when I say apart from Jan Smuts these were soldiers, I of course meant Paul Kruger which I later correct in the presentation as Smuts was indeed a fine Soldier. Also just to clarify when I compared Kruger to Osama Bin Laden, this is not because I feel Kruger is a terrorist ( I certainly do not!). The comparison was made because Kruger was demonised by the British press, he was a leader that combined military means and religious rhetoric and who eventually had to flee into exile after the Boers lost a series of key battles.
An excellent presentation and what an interesting and knowledgeable lecturer!
I had my first 2 dates with my wife in the late 90s, at the little cinema that was in pemberton. If I remember rightly we watched a really depressing film with micheal Keaton and Nicole Kidman, think it was called my life, and about a family man dying of cancer. Then we watched interview with the vampire, or it may have been the other way round. Went to the main cinemas in the centre of Wigan a few times over the years from being a small child, to a teenager, had a few dates there too Remember going to the main cinema watching rocky 4 with a bunch of people from school.
Like many Northern towns Wigan’s demise started under Thatcher and continued under Blair. I’m old enough to remember Wigan in the 1960’s and 70’s. No charity shops or homeless people on the streets -independent shops and a sense of pride in the town.
Great listen, thank you.
Used to love the song in school it was apart of the school bus songs when going to the baths and other places.
Hi, do you have any info/pictures relating to North Hall at Worthington ?
Loving the content, you provide on this channel. I’m Wigan based myself and well, if you need help with the assisting of running the channel I would be happy to help. Speak soon Steve
Great info, I think that Rothschild's Waddesdon Manor may have trumped Eaton Hall in cost to build at that time.
My grandfather's sister in Croydon, having looked after all her younger brothers and sisters while they were ill died of Spanish Flu in November 1919.
Fantastic grew up in this area
wigan is dead
😂
I’m from Wigan me Whelley 👍
Absolutely brilliant enjoyed every second
Brilliant Derek, I wasn't aware you'd done videos...thankyou
I remember Pony Dick Colliery when I use to go work, straight down Enfield Street then across to Foundry Lane and down to the company called Wm Todd’s who took over the old Pit buildings belonging to Blundell Pit as workshop and offices. Then May Mill was working. I also remember the Foundry Inn pub just at he bottom of Foundry Lane just before the entrance to May Mill.
plasterwork reminds me of Astley hall a little.
Enjoying the lecture.
I used the library as a child and was curiously impressed by the architecture especially the pierced columns but it didn't fit in with 60s zeitgeist . I appreciate the effort put into these buildings and they were built to last so we got value as they were made with good materials . Unfortunately the sighting of the library building made access difficult as it was on a hill and i remember struggling with access in wet weather. I think architecture got into a wedding cake arms race with Pugin as leader of the pack.
Fantastic presentations, been enjoying all about your Roman History to Current day. Thank you, Liverpudlian neighbour 🫱🏾🫲🏽 Ps the monument is a Wonderful 😊
Absolutely fascinating Jim. Thanks for putting in so much work and sharing with us
I remember the all American shop...there was a big American bald Eagle on display...a stuffed one not living also American football helmets...you brought back some memories when you mentioned this
Really enjoyed this, after a visit to the enchanting Library St Museum, thank you.
my dad was a projectionist in the cinemas in Wigan in the 50's and 60's!!
Sounds like one of the best jobs in the world , I’d love to do that.
THE change that nobody in wigan wanted why cannot go back to lancashire NOW
Eeee Wigan my home town… I vaguely remember it being like this before they built the new indoor market and galleries. They successfully managed to ruin that now as well, last time I went to Wigan the indoor market was a shell of what it used to be and the outdoor market is now virtually non existent… so sad to see. I think the biggest waste of money was the new shopping centre, all that happened was the businesses in the galleries moved to there which made the old galleries like a ghost town I think Wigan also has a problem with anti social behaviour these days, I lived there all my life until 18 months ago when I moved to anglesey for a quieter life. I love Wigan and it I will always class it as my home but The crime rate was increasing and we were seeing more violent crimes happening in our local community. And the traffic in and around Wigan is bonkers, try driving anywhere at 3pm onwards at 30mph is almost impossible, your lucky if your actually moving. Once it took me 2 hours to travel 10 miles 🤯….. since living on Anglesey I have never once got stuck in a traffic jam, sometimes you can go out and never get behind another car and no cars behind you……and you never see gangs of youth hanging around outside of shops or on street corners. In fact I Dont think I’ve ever seen a gang of kids 😂 saying that I do live in the middle of nowhere 😂😂
you're not your meaning you are.
I’m from Wigan me 👍
Hang on this is confusing. There is a Roman fort somewhere around here, but we don't know where? And here we have Millgate, Wallgate etc, which did have gates on them, but still, there's no sign of that fort. Hmmm.
Hi, The fort was centred around what is now Believe Square. I cover it about 11 mins into the talk. We know the town had gates erected as part of civil war defences in the 1600s as there is reference to them being burnt down. Gates were also in place when fairs were run. People had to pay to enter.
The 'gate' in Wallgate, Hallgate, Standishgate etc. means 'street', not 'gate'. Confusing, I know. It's from Scandinavian 'gata', street. Those names originate in viking times.
Anyone Remember Voses pie shop in Wigan town centre 👍
All brilliant history of my ancestor tree.
Sound is shocking
My Shollay family connects to the Westwood too.
Thank you . I love this. My Walmesley family.
Excellent presentation Thank you. I live in Goose Green and take my dogs for a walk every day up the "black Path" which was the old line leading up to the top of Winstanley.
unfortunately Harry Houdini got locked in the hippodrome😅😅
brill , does anyone know where i could get a picture of the crown inn on miry lane
As a regular weekly visitor (2 to 3 times a week) to Wigan from the late 70's to the mid 80's and less so until about 15 years ago. It really saddens me how this once great bustling town has fallen. Genuinely some of the most friendly, down to earth and funny people I have ever met.
hi grate vid but i think you missed one the empire up the wiend wigan
How can you get a cinema up the wiend?😅
High just watched your video and right at the end cane across the Markland name I'm a Markland and always got told we had money 😅a long time ago.
Yes - the Marklands of Markland Mill were wealthy and owned a lot of land. There were four Mayors of Wigan from the family, two MPs, and two Rear Admirals!
@@jimmeehan8810 cheers for that my neighbour when I was a kid in Hindley was a Mr Simmons he was the mayor in the early nineties and invited my mum and dad to his ceremony.
@@jimmeehan8810do you recommend anyone who I could pay to look up my family tree as my father has always spoke about it now I'm 53 I'm getting more interested in where I come from 😂
This was a fascinating talk. Very well researched and skilfully presented by Will and Pat ❤
Great talk/video, really interesting. Wondering if I can pick your brains. On your video just after 9 minutes you show a map with numbers for different buildings/land areas etc. Do you have the "key" for that map. Number 77 is where my great grand parents lived with there nineteen children, yes nineteen! It's where ATS was, now Dominoes pizza. There was a pair of semi detatched houses there where they ran the local green grocers from. If you don't have the key for the map, could you let me know where you got the map from and I will try to get a copy, Thank you.
Hi - there is not key as such - the numbers refer to entries in the sale brochure that give a sentence or two about the property. I don't have a copy to hand. There are copies in Wigan Local Studies above the museum in Library Street and in the Archives at Leigh Town Hall. I go to both frequently and will have a look at the entry next time I am there. If you want to contact me by email at jmeehan2202@gmail.com I will forward details to you. best wishes Jim Meehan
the worst thing wigan council have ever done and hopefully it wont get worster than this
Fascinating. Hope there are more stories in the pipeline. Anything about Whelley?! 😊
First class and enthusiastic presentation. Thanks WLHHS & Sean.
