The air was a little quick and starting to get thermic so not such a fun flight. You can't see from this or any other camera angle taken from the 360 but the glider was being pushed around a bit hence the higher than usual line. I got picked up and dumped a little on the landing so missed Kieron's grass ramp and headed for the path but got given the raised edge between the two and took a chunk ...

The breeze disappeared so I had to find enough grass to forward launch, The Ronin is way too delicate to risk any road abrasions on wing or lines. A very pleasant flight down though for the usual pint at ODG. My dad and brother were at the pub and hilariously, a tourist turned to my dad and said, "another daft prat with a handkerchief" 🤣

Launching in nil wind had me leaning so far forward the pole mount got stuck the lines! Everything went fine and the camera was easy to remove but nevertheless a cautionary note on backpack mounts!

God they are different to the sedate Edel apollo 27 I used to fly in the 90s in Snowdonia. Is that wasdale head in the Lakes?
@@arcadia1081 langdale mate, launch just below loft crag. And yeh, that wing/harness weighs 1.4kg and fits into an 11l backpack along with jacket, water and snacks etc. helmet fixes onto the outside of the bag.

@@DaveLivesey mate, I might be the biggest advocate of single skins! So many advantages. I get to fly this a lot!

What windspeed can you launch in and fly against with one of these things?
@@GrasmereHikeAndFly above 10/12mph it starts to get a bit uncomfortable so try and keep it light. Thermic conditions aren’t much fun either.

Yeh I have a GoPro so I can film from helmet. You do lose a lot of the field of view though so I'd edged away from it. What is it you'd want to see from that angle?

What's the take off wind speed window of these speed wings?
@@Glenburrows it’s a single skin paraglider so not a speed wing. It’ll launch in whatever wind you want 🤣 but flying it isn’t much fun in more than 10mph. It’s uncomfortable to have it pushed around in high winds or thermic air and you can’t really have a fun playful flight with either of those. So I keep to about 10mph and non thermic conditions for best fun flying :)

@@cyclonasaurusrex1525 yeh you have to ease into slowly! Launching into cloud is a bit nerve wracking but I know that hillside very well and this was the third flight of the day so I knew roughly where I was going to come out of it :)

@@RagingGamingBear yeh this is way cheaper than paramotoring. The wings pack down soooo small. This one weight under 1.5kg with the harness. It blows my mind still you can fly with that!
You fly like a speedflyer! I am curious, have you ever measured your airspeed? Looks fast for a single skin.
no, not sure how to measure air speed but coming out of dives or steep turns I'm pretty sure I'll be going fast! I think there's a good safety compromise with these wings in that we can get fast and fly prox but always have the float factor when getting close. I'll fly a speedwing one day though I'm certain :)
@@jamesaustrums Just use a GPS, some cameras have them built in nowadays. It is not %100 percent accurate measurement of airspeed but will give you a good idea of what yours is.

@@jamesaustrums Most pilots fly into the wind, get a gps reading, then fly downwind and get another GPS reading. The average between the two is a “best guess” of your airspeed is. Not the most accurate but better than buying a pilot tube for paragliding.

Yeh it was quite snappy on launch. Kept me high on the traverse though :)
This reminded me of my early hang gliding days ,flying from Bruce Peak on Salt Spring Island, B.C. Canada. On stable overcast days we would fly down and land on the beach across from the Fulford Inn. We would then carry our gliders across the road and park them in the parking lot and go in for a beer while we waited for our driver to bring my van down the mountain . Eventually the pub manager asked us to park our gliders around the back of the pub as we were taking up too many parking spaces ! Fond memories !
Sounds great man, so good to have these things, not just in the current moment but to look back fondly upon :)
Which wing do you fly
The pink one is an AD Ronin and the green one a Vril One, both 14m

Yeh exactly! TOW 95 and 85 respectively both glide very well. Lines significantly longer on the vril!

@@philipv3098 no, it changes so much with wind strength and direction. Launch, glide and landing are impressive on the ronin though. I did a flight off Suilven that might demonstrate the glide well. Uploaded 2/3 weeks back now.

Love the camera POV. Is that an Insta 360 on a pole up from behind your harness? I've only flown in the Lakes once , a few sites , but a good few years ago. Where was that? Mind you, I paraglide, and that's not a pg spot!
@@bobflyman yeh it’s an insta360 but just straight GoPro-like helmet mount. I have a backpack and pole mount so I’ll stick some of that stuff up soon too :) this is langdale, you do see plenty of full size wings about on the right day but it’s not amazing for soaring or xc.
I had a '1 day trial' many years ago. I was told I couldnt continue because she (the misses) was pregnant. We're now seperated and I no longer get to see my Daughter.... maybe its time for another go at it

Brother that's my story too. Now I finished my CP a few weeks ago and will fly with my instructors and friends in the French Alps in September. Keep going, start flying and you'll never regret it. 👊
