CLC's Passagemaker Dinghy Under Sail
CLC's 11'7" Passagemaker Dinghy can be rowed, powered, or towed, but she's also a thoroughbred little sailing yacht, shown here at play in 15-20 knots of wind. This is the sloop rig; there's also an option for a single balanced lug sail with fewer strings but similar performance. Find out more:

How to Install Gunnel Guard on Dinghies and Small Boats
Does the vang help much? Mine doesn't have one. I also have rigged it with the jib sheets outside of the shrouds, they should be inside? Shrouds seem to be a little slacker than on mine. Dosen't matter, but mine was pictured in your gallery as a dinghy to a Morgan that circumnavigated. An early build I believe. Weird thing about mine, it has finger joints on one side, and scarf joints on the other
The boom vang keeps the mainsail powered up when reaching or running. The sails in the video are 19 years old so they needed all the help they could get... That's the only time I've run that boat with a vang. The shrouds do need to be snugged up on that boat, too.
Well done sir!
The balanced lug works splendidly on this boat, too. We chose that rig for our take-apart version because of the ease of setting and striking the rig when switching between sailing and rowing. We were very pleasantly surprised to find that she sailed much better than the lug rig's somewhat negative reputation would suggest, including upwind. When that rig is properly understood, the sail well shaped (Doug Fowler's as supplied by CLC are amazing), and set and trimmed to best advantage, ours has proven surprisingly fast in a decent breeze for such a short, beamy, curvy creature. Good looking, too!
Is that a new mast for the Passagemaker? Is that going to be offered by CLC? Would there be plans available? Seems to be a much easier setup. Nice work.
That's a wooden mast substituted for the aluminum mast. The hardware required-t-track, two goosenecks-make the option very expensive, so we haven't been in a rush to roll out a wooden mast option for sloop rigs. I do have a drawing of the wooden mast I can send along should anyone want to build one. Send a note to info@clcboats.com
Wow what a great little sailer
Looks like a fun sailboat! 👍
Looks great, very nice. Thanks for sharing.
Nice! Is this boat better at sailing in light, medium, or heavy winds than the Jimmy Skiff II?
Scratches head...tough one! I think that in light and moderate air the two boats would be closely matched. In heavy air, the Jimmy Skiff II, with its taller rig and longer waterline, would start to pull away. The Passagemaker is more stable in heavy air, however.
Would be interesting to compare it with the Mirror Dinghy :-)
Any resemblance to the Mirror Dinghy is absolutely intentional!
@@ChesapeakeLightCraftBoats You could have copied it, but I know, John is not able to reduce the number of planks down to the mirror - standard ^^ BTW, ist there any CLC boat that has planks wider than 8 ''?
April fools.
Very cool 😊
meget godt
Great video!
Using CNC is cheating.
Truly wonderful
Harkens my inner 6% Swedish Viking dna !!! … shoulda yelled out “Odin” when those other sailboats passed in front of you !!!
Quietest bunch of blokes I’ve ever seen 😂
What a beautiful boat. I hope there's an option for a dragon-head and tail. It just wouldn't be complete without one.
👍👍
20-30kts, downwind, full reach? Brassy ballasts you have there
Can I buy it from you? I live in Estonia
Crazy cool!
OK... but why would I want to build a pallet as art object, and what would I do with it? Is this project for people who already own forklifts?
Have you started producing these kits yet?
Yes. We shipped the first kit a few weeks ago.
This is amazing! I want to build a small one this size
Just came across this. All of you are amazing entrepreneurs, boat designers, builders, and doers. What an amazing discussion. thanks for doing this.
That moves nicely through the water despite the chop.
I'm still paddling the Cape Charles kayak I built over 20 years from CLC plans. Still getting comments about how nice it looks, even though it has imperfections that resulted from my lack of skill. Thanks for all the great work, CLC.
Very cool!
I think perhaps that it is genetically impossible to do this and not have a smile that wraps complete 360 degrees completely around your head. I don't think it can be done...
my dad ,a waterman who worked the Chesapeake bay, built me a 14 ft skiff like that when I was 11 five horse sea king outboard man I was in heaven!
That's my idea of a boat! Seaworthy, row and sail. Can be used to go fishing, camping, picknicking.
THE question........ Would denim fabric be suitable to replace fiberglass...or is it really a bad idea?
You COULD use denim. Because it's tightly woven, it will be difficult to saturate with epoxy. And since it's heavier than fiberglass, I would expect the boat to be substantially heavier. From a structural standpoint...I don't think there's a problem. It'll be strong enough.
sanding is fun gggrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!! 😭😅
Awesome… I’m still trying to get my CLC Dory done, can’t wait. Nice boat !
Tempting. Im working on restoring a tahiti ketch, but wanna build a simple little sailboat to putter around Cape Cod Bay on in the meantime. Would you guys sell the lug rig kit without the mast, since I already have a suitable spar for that purpose?
We can certainly do an "ala carte" order for that rig. Probably best to give the team a call at 410-267-0137.
@@ChesapeakeLightCraftBoats Excellent! I'll keep it in mind and give you guys a call when I'm ready to order. Thanks!
Far out , man !!! … that’s moving with the sail !!!
I should finish building mine by the end of the month. Thank you for the motivation.
Robust designs, easy to build, lightweighted, good looking ... that's CLC. I enjoy my Dory mainly as rowboat, but she also sails nice :-)
I’ve been working on my Dory for about 6years… I’m not going to quit…can’t wait to sail her, thanks for sharing…👍🏼
@@duanegregg6222 It took me six years to finish my Northeaster Dory. Well worth it. It makes it all the sweeter at launch.
Hello Harris! good navigation, I see you got your ass a little wet.. hahaha
I built a skerry 3 summers ago. I had a great time building it! It's a good sailor in light to moderate wind and rows beautifully.
Good choice of music.
I am sorry, but it needed to be more aligned with the "Downloadable-Printable personal device flotation" (D-P.pdf). This is way too realistic and plausible a self-irony, making the humor too subtle for today's day and age :) You done used a fine-sharpened engraving burin, when a sledgehammer was called for there, mister!
how often does one need to revarnish/touch up year to year if that's the route they choose?
Interesting. One concession to stitch and tape plywood: Symmetrical hull shape in cross section. Traditional Polynesian proas were asymmetrical, flatter on leeward side, rounded on the windward side, producing lift to windward. Thus the traditional shape is actually more hydro-dynamically sophisticated; cut by hand with adze.
Fantastic! I want one, maybe two. Was the camera gyro-stabilized? It caught the dynamics of the scene perfectly - giving the feeling of actually riding in the boat very realistically. A real beauty, a mere 900 years old. Like I said, I want one.
sure is a cutie !!! … wish it were a 20 footer !!!
The next replica should be a Spanish Caravelle. Maybe a replica of Columbus's Nina?
They make a spinnaker for that; then you would really be moving!
Who knew that Vikings invented rockets in the 12th century?
just awesome
