No she didn't die. She realized she was having drunken sex with someone she didn't want to. And her face at first just ghostly, turned a whiter shade of pale ("But I took her by the looking glass and forced her to agree"; there was a mirror where, under today's laws, he raped her). She said there is no reason (why I don't want to sleep with you) and the truth is plain to see (she wasn't attracted to him). But I wandered through my playing cards and would not let her be. He pestered her into drunken sex. He wasn't proud of it and wrote a song about it. In short, it's about his regret he raped a woman.

@@1andycraig Back in the day it was actually par for the course and was just considered "a bad date" or a drunken mistake etc. etc. These days it might or might not be considered rape, if she actually agreed to it or not (even is she was pressured to say OK and said yes, it isn't rape unless she says no and he doesn't stop. Lots of one nighters go that way and it's still more common than most people think. There is still a lot of people that wake up the next morning and regret it. Sometimes the regret comes in the middle of the act "her face at first just ghostly turned a whiter shade of pale". Guys being guys wanna finish up but the ones with a conscience and some self awareness regret it, and even write about it in diary's, poems, stories and songs.

With the two extra verses, the meaning is a lot clear. The reason that her face turned a whiter shade of pale was that, she died.

This song has worked its way into my life over the last 50+ years as an anthem that embodies and reflects all the loves, the good times, the sad times, the loss, the intimacies, the loneliness, and the enduring friendships in the midst of my life. It started in the slow dance era of my first youthful love and kept re-appearing on the radio waves at memorable times with people who were deeply important to me, in different places, over time…like in Kansas, Utah, California, Alberta, Oregon, Washington, on and on. And as a subtle foot note to my enduring connections with A Whiter Shade of Pale, this video was created by Ms. Wolf on September 1, my birthday. And in 2017, just five weeks before our home and entire neighborhood were suddenly destroyed in a California firestorm. This song absorbed that event and helped lift my spirits in the aftermath.
I'm wondering where this brilliant live version was performed and recorded? It almost seems to drag at times, but Gary is obviously reading the room and conducting the rallentandos before picking up again 'al tiempo'. Apart from the magic of the extra verses, this live performance has a very different, more emotional feel than others I've heard.

My vision is one of a Surreal Dream, full of Greek Mythology and Shades of Meaning, based on my ideas of ancient history rather than on a modern Cruise ship. For anyone who has read the Circus of Dr Lao, one of the stories is about the sacrifice of the Vestal Virgins. The extra verses from TheBadlnb, mentioning Neptune, words like looking glass, suggest ancient history. His suggestion about rearranging the verses appears to give the story more clarity. Still have not figured out "the ceiling flew away". Any suggestions ?
