Thank you for putting this together. Disappointing that it has been viewed by so few and not commented on. Love the screening tool. Balancing the needs for adequate energy during this period of growth and development, and avoiding REDs against the potential downside of frequent eating and the subsequent risk of metabolic syndrome in the long run is difficult. In the context of the typical diet recommended, this does not turn out well for most of our population- they are not healthy. The research on REDs (e.g., Charlton, Braeden T, Sara Forsyth and David C Clarke, ‘Low Energy Availability and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport: What Coaches Should Know’ (2022) 17(2) International Journal of Sports Science & Coaching 445) does not seem to understand that some athletes are able to operate at intense levels without the usual level of carbohydrates. Dr Peter Brukner has managed these diets for entire teams at elite level in cricket and football. Charlton et al (2022) have not acknowledge some studies show that low-carbohydrate diets can maintain performance at higher intensities.Carbohydrate may not be necessary for exercise at higher intensities. STrength and power athletes can even make weight (which we are not trying to do with football players). and retain performance and muscle mass. (Henselmans M, Bjørnsen T, Hedderman R, Vårvik FT. The Effect of Carbohydrate Intake on Strength and Resistance Training Performance: A Systematic Review. Nutrients. 2022 Feb 18;14(4):856. doi: 10.3390/nu14040856. PMID: 35215506; PMCID: PMC8878406; Greene, David A et al, ‘A Low-Carbohydrate Ketogenic Diet Reduces Body Mass Without Compromising Performance in Powerlifting and Olympic Weightlifting Athletes’ (2018) 32(12) Journal of strength and conditioning research 3373).

When I was about 17-18 i was a still a pretty good athlete myself and competing (not in cycling btw). My neighbour was real serious and deep in roadcycling, he was riding thousands of km´s each and every year, competing at real strong races in Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria... He also sometimes rode along with Zabel and other big names then in the races. I can still remember what he told me back in those days, when he was coming home from a race in italy, must have been around 1996... He said that he was riding in the Peloton, going around 50-55 km/h for about 1 hour on a flat section, after that the first mountain was there, he reached top with puls 200 and gave everything he had. On the way down the motorcycle appeared, reading on their sheet: Top Group 5 Riders +4:15 He told me that he nearly shit his self on the bike when seeing this. He also told me that a real young guy (around 18) was barely able to catch his wheel and ride in his draft in that particular race. But just 8 months later this young guy was 3rd at a race in Spain... My neighbour still had a job, i remember talking with him - he was battling with the decision to either go pro 100% and invest like about 7k´s then for the first EPO treatment or go on with his normal life. He said, he could also be that guy finishing 3rd if he does. I told him, well yeah, but you do not need to have hard feelings about him then because you gonna be a cheat too. He decided against it - wise man he really was that time! ♥

bike racing is riddled with hypocrisy, to say it`s endemic is slightly misleading ,as the real corruption is at its commercial core, the so called pro`s the "athletes" are manipulated minions to that end, U,C,I only display cursory control depending on the backhanders ,one can only speculate who gets what? generlly it`s ruined what could have been a truly great sport, had it only been left unmolested by greed.!

Tyler is still not being truthful. All competitive tour riders are dopers. It’s ok or it should be as long as you pass the governing body’s testing. Example: Lance Armstrong passed all test and never fail even one but he was still stripped of all of his tour victories. That’s BS! The sport has lost a lot of integrity. Their rules are whatever they decide to make them at any time. Ridiculous!
