Toon Squad Animation - Episode 04
A short 2D animation that myself and fellow film maker Mark Knight made for the NFT project 'Toon Squad'.
Interesting fact about this project was that we encouraged members of the Toon Squad NFT community to contribute ideas/ suggestions on all parts of the pre-production.

Nice work bro
Cheers bud, much appreciated :)
About how many hours, roughly, does it take to animate a short like this?
Nice. Bro, why you did not made videos since 2 years.?
Lot of stuff I have had to deal with over past 2 years which have soaked up my freetime. Got a new job with another gaming studio, relocated myself and my family further up the map. Just busy busy busy but things are beginning to relax now and I aim to start making more content for my channels.
@@MarkDaviesArt cool. Congratulations for your new job. Happy for you.. Want more animation tutorial from you bro.
@@2danimationmentor cheers bud and yes, I am gonna be making more soon. Just need to decide what to cover. If you got any suggestions please feel free to share any thoughts.

Thank you so much for this video! It is very helpful, as I am about to start creating a 2D animation. Thank you!!! :)
You are welcome :) glad you found it helpful.

This is so well done! I really like that you drew and painted the backgrounds by hand.
Thanks Steve :)
How did you merge the watercolor background with the animation?
Sir How can you whole image sequence import in krita. How can you add image sequence in timline.I want to know. Which krita version did you use
Can I ask you something pls?
Yes.
@@MarkDaviesArt I'm making a show and I was wondering if you could animate for it.

Amazing video. I now realise that all of my Procreate paintings should have had many more hours work on them.
I have been seller on fiverr for two years now, the main issue is that client does not comprehend the animation process. Most of the clients are not aware of the characters design, background design and most important The script. They don't have the basic knowledge. I had to cancel many orders because of that particular reason he just give up very basic idea and his or her real photo and ask you to do a 5 mins. Video!!!
In all honesty you will find that a lot with clients in general are the same. They do not understand how time dependant animation is, and also how costly it can be, which in fairness is not there fault, they are not animators so how are they suppose to know. Best to get things clarified and cleared as early as possible before production. I am a huge fan of storyboards and animatics, if you work with a client on a storyboard, you can state how much a project would cost just from a few simple sketches, the client then can say yes, or re- evaluate a production that would still work for their needs but at a cheaper cost. Totally get what your saying though :)
Great 👍
Cheers bud, glad you liked.
Very nice work!!! 😊
Cheers bud :)
I loved the explaining of the process of how you came up with the final production of the animation but my heart sank when I saw the beautiful green watercolours turn to black and grey at the end. As a watercolour artist it just made me cringe. But overall a good tutorial.
Why no one use OpenToonz for cleaning and coloring? It has many good tools for animation + it's free and open source. I follow a lot of animators from amatory to professional. They use TvPaint, Clip Studio, Photoshop or Krita. Why they don't using OpenToonz?
A really interesting question and one I can’t really answer as I don’t know enough of the software but let’s give it a go. In preparation for this video I made, I did test openToonz and straight off the cuff it does have a lot to offer. Either tradigital or traditional, the software does allow you to make animations fully in the software. For traditional animation It also offers line testing capabilities, testing scenes by photographing frames directly in the software which you don’t see much in other software. The main reason for not using open toonz for this video was I do find its UI and userbility to not be very intuitive. I feel the software requires a steep learning curve and I wanted something simpler for my fellow viewers but which provides great results so they could get straight into animation without dedicating themselves to learning a new software. Probably why you see lots of people using other software like photoshop, clip paint etc, it’s because these software are kind of familiar in function/ shortcut keys and actions. So if you know how to use photoshop, you probably will almost know how to use clip paint/ Krita/ after effects/ flash without much research into how to use the software, they are very intuitive programmes. Additionally to my knowledge, there are very little 2D animation productions that use opentoons. I understand that in the Asian market this may be different (I know of the studio ghibli link with the software), but in the western market, 2D animation productions are generally made with Toonboom, TVP, Adobe animate, After effects, Cel action and of recent Moho. Therefore if you needed to devote time and effort into fully learning a software to animate with, it would be better advised to learn something that is more industry standard so have more chance of employment. That being said I am personally very interested to see what can be done with openToonz and if I get some free time, I would like to take a deep dive and see what I can do with it.
@@MarkDaviesArt Thank you for your reply. I will look forward to your OpenToonz focused content.
I use opentoonz and tahoma2d.
Hi! Glad I found you! I landed here from watching other animation videos on *Rough* *Animator* which I was beginning to assume I didn't really need to bring my *KRITA* into the Workflow until the very very end if at all. Bro can you tell me how to draw like anime artist does
Honestly I don’t ever think I’ve drawn an anime style cartoon before, but could be an interesting experience. Might be worth making a video showing how I would tackle a style that I am unfamiliar with.

@@MarkDaviesArt CZcams actually suggested one of our recent videos and after watching that one I felt like checking your previous videos.. U have come a long way from where u started and the journey reflects in your work too!!
Hey 😊 how did you do for adding shadows? :)
Do you mean the shadows on the floor? Quite simple really. When compositing the scene in after effects (or Hit film if you use that) duplicate the layer that is of the character, then add a hue adjustment effect to the layer and push the brightness all the way down to dark so it’s black. Adjust the vertical scale of this layer and it’s positioning so it looks like a shadow on the floor, Then set the opacity of the layer to around 50% so you can see through it. Done!
Very Inspiring thank you so much :)
your welcome :)
Awesome!
