The fediverse offers an opportunity to rethink how trust and safety works in social media. In a decentralized environment, creating safe and welcoming places relies on community moderation, transparent governance, and innovation in tooling. Samantha Lai, senior research analyst at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and Jaz-Michael King, the executive director of IFTAS, are here to explain how. Samantha co-authored a seminal paper, “Securing Federated Platforms: Collective Risks and Responses,” along with Twitter’s former head of trust and safety, Yoel Roth. Jaz runs IFTAS, which offers trust and safety support for volunteer content moderators, community managers, admins and more. The two often collaborate and bring perspectives from the policy and operational sides.

There are mentions that flips can be scheduled but I have yet to find that option. What am I missing? I would like to add my content on a daily basis but prefer batch working on that. Also it would be great to have more information about the sizing of the images you are using - are you pulling the prefered image or can we choose something else? And what are the limitations inside of the notes we can share? thx.

That was a really interesting conversation, thank you to Mike, to Rachel, and to Peter. The discussion on monetization was especially interesting. I'm myself a creator, I run two paid newsletters (one in French, one in English). I use Ghost, which announced just today that they will support ActivityPub (and maybe AT Protocol at a later date). Considering the advanced paywall capabilities of Ghost, it will basically be able to act as a federated version of Substack, and possibly Patreon. Which is an excellent development. I'm very interested to see how this area of the Fediverse will evolve. And even if I'm a freelance with limited resources, I'm willing to contribute at my own, modest level to this change (I might have been the person Evan draw inspiration from to paywall a Mastodon account 👀).

Data ownership is the future and open protocols will make it possible to wall in our own garden and reap bountiful harvests while the old white men try to figure out how to regain access to our data. The final frontier before the collapse of the current corporate model will be brokering the data that has been liberated. Once the user controls their own data and the protocols exist to share this data, the world will completely shift putting control back into the hands of the people. Open Source for the win.
