HRCH Resolute Red King of Texas (“Rory”) cast off point handling drill
There are times we need to get our dogs on a piece of land or point and there are times we need to get them off. In this drill we cross this point with a back pile on the other side of the pond and work on two casts while in route to the back pile.
Drill order was back pile, then sit/left cast off point, back pile, then sit/ left back (dealing with suction from left pile) , then back pile
I have also run from the other direction to cast on to the point

The Big R getting it done and running straight at Resolute Ranch in Bowie on a recently finished tech pond. Here he is running a 130 yard blind tucked away up against some trees after about a 40 yard pond exit. We did a mark out past the peninsula just before so the blind was under the arc.

Set up a 2 marks(80y and 100y) one blind (150y) with the plan to get some handling in on the blind. Marks are out to either side of the line to the blind, decoys in the area, 2 small mounds bookmark the line, plum thicket and lastly the blind is tucked back in a slot of trees. Mission accomplished. HRCH Rory on the water duck triple with a diversion bird at the 2023 spring grand in Omaha, GA. He ran at 7:30 pm the first day, second to the last day as the sun was setting. He smoked the mark and had a reasonable blind. We headed to the second series.

A marking drill for a retriever that can be setup at any distances but with the focus of punching past the two shorter marks. Here we are in a coastal bermuda pasture with slight terrain changes. So, dogs are to mark off of the holding blinds but have done previously with large round bales.

A fun handling drill for finished retrievers that can be done on land or water. This drill helps to reinforce casting including left and right backs, left and right angle backs, an occasional over and reverse casting (carrying a bumper). Each stake also creates suction for inside back casts. I run this drill with the stakes about 15 yards apart and casting from around 45 yards.
